'Hero of the Hudson' Video Game Simulates Crash Landing

>> Saturday, January 31, 2009

Online gamers have been given the chance to become the "Hero of the Hudson" — but some have branded the video game as offensive.

US Airways pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger's heroic splash landing into the River Hudson earlier this month saved dozens of lives and was heralded as a miracle.

Now a team of developers has created an online video game that lets users try their hand at his landing.

The game is set on the approach to the Hudson River, alongside Manhattan's west side, where the plane touched down in icy waters.

Players have to keep the plane balanced at the correct incline and bring it to a smooth landing on the water.

Failing could mean putting the lives of virtual passengers at risk, as the jet crashes and sinks into the river with an ominous gurgling sound.

Hero pilot Sullenberger was forced to ditch his plane on Jan. 15 after it collided with a flock of birds shortly after take-off.

All 155 passengers and crew survived the US Airways Flight 1549 from New York's La Guardia airport, bound for Charlotte, North Carolina.

But the new game has had a mixed response online.

One blogger comments: "The game is about as primitive as you can get.

"Most of the comments below the game hit it on the head. It's boring, stupid and offensive."

Yet it is spreading fast across the Web and has already been played by several thousand people.

Victims of massive Internet Ponzi scheme sue Bank of America

Your Ad Here

The victims of a massive Internet Ponzi scheme have sued Bank of America (BofA) for helping the fraud occur by continuing to do business with the alleged perpetrators despite numerous signs of illegal activity.

In a suit filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia earlier this month, fraud victims claimed that BofA's role as the financial institution of the company behind the alleged Ponzi scheme lent the operation an air of misplaced legitimacy. The bank's failure to follow industry standards for compliance with money laundering laws and banking regulations, "aided and abetted" those behind the scheme, the lawsuit claimed.

Steven Berk, a lawyer at Chavez & Gertler LLP, the Washington-based law firm that filed the lawsuit, said today that the Ponzi scheme would not have succeeded to the extent it did without a "serious bank behind it. I have talked to ... victims who all said the fact they could make deposits (into the scheme) with Bank of America made them feel it was legitimate," he said. "That puts [the bank] squarely in the middle.

"It was not as if they were a tangential player in any of this," Berk said. He argued that the existence of multiple accounts in the company's name, numerous small deposits and the fact that the company was not selling any tangible product or service should have raised questions at the bank.

Named in the lawsuit along with BofA are the owners and operators of AdSurfDaily, AdSurfDaily Cash Generator, Golden Panda Ad Builder and La Fuente Dinero. All of the entities are alleged to have sold online "ad packages" that conferred membership in a program under which individuals were promised 150% of what they paid in return for viewing specified Web sites and advertisements. About 140,000 people signed up for the program.

Last August, the Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum's office filed a lawsuit against AdSurfDaily, charging it with running a "huge pyramid scheme." The complaint noted that the firm had collected millions of dollars from individuals by falsely promising them huge returns. That lawsuit came on the heels of a raid by the U.S. Secret Service on the company's headquarters in Quincy, Fla.

After the raid, the Department of Justice seized $53 million owned by Thomas Bowdoin Jr., owner of AdSurfDaily, which operates AdSurfDaily.com, ASDcashgenerator.com, Lafuentedinero.com and Goldenpandaadbuilder.com.

AdSurfDaily's program was widely advertised online, including on YouTube, and at well-attended conventions and rallies across the country. Participants were promised large returns simply by spending between seven and 15 minutes viewing a total of 24 Web sites that AdSurfDaily would rotate through their browsers. Prices for the ad packages ranged from $10 to $50,000 -- the larger the ad package, the larger the return that was promised.

McCollum's office estimated that two events in Florida netted the company about $100 million.

BofA officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. No one from AdSurfDaily could be reached for comment either.

Google Flags Whole Internet As Malware

Your Ad Here

We're not quite sure what's going on, but a couple of minutes ago any search result from Google started being flagged as malware with a message stating "This site may harm your computer". Including Google's own website as you can see above.

Twitter is abuzz with people reporting the massive error (also look for tags #googmayharm or #googmayhem), and it's clear that this is happening around the world. Apparently, it's happening with any browser on any platform too.

Clicking the message takes people to a support page from Google (image below), but this is being bombarded with millions of people right now so it's very slow to respond. I saw the page briefly, and it pointed to StopBadware.org (which is obviously also loading slowly or not at all right now).

Update: it seems to be fixing itself. I'm having no more issues on Google Belgium, still getting warning messages for malicious software when I search Google.com. Also, it only seems to occur when you're searching as a signed-in user now.

Update 2: it seems to be fine now. Lasted about 15 minutes. You can take a deep breath now and go on with whatever you were doing before Now we just have to wait for Google to tell us what went wrong. It's quite clear that a meltdown of this size, no matter how short it was, will be the topic of discussion for the coming days (and not only at the Googleplex, I'd wager)

Google’s “This site may harm your computer”: Bug or Hacked?

Your Ad Here

The Google has flipped out. Starting a few minutes ago when I try to click on any Google search result, I am shown all the sites were marked on “This site may harm your computer“. The one below was the result when I tried to click through to http://google.com/, the first result for searching for “google”. It is obviously an error in Google’s software and one that surely will be fixed shortly, if it has not been fixed already. Since Google is highly distributed, it’s possible that only some of their sites are in error.

Every site, including searching for “google” as you can see below are apparently malicious. Every second Google is down costs the company millions of dollars, and all of the businesses that rely on Google to market and advertise their services.

At present, it is not clear for all sites have been marked on “This site may harm your computer” error, is Google’s own Bug led to such a mistake, or Google has been attacked by hackers. But I believe Google will soon fix the error, and look forward to Google’s explanation. Moreover, we can expect to be, this time in the next few days the matter will become the hot topic of IT news and blogs.

Hope Google don’t make this mistake again.

Call 4 Action: Peanut Butter Recall List Gets Longer

Many Products Potentially Tainted By Salmonella
PITTSBURGH - The Food and Drug Administration is adding even more products to a massive recall of salmonella-tainted peanut butter.

And health officials are moving to make sure the bad stuff stays off shelves.

Call 4 Action: Peanut Butter Recall List Gets Longer

Channel 4 Action News' Aaron Saykin reported it's important to point out the peanut butter in the jar is safe. But many other products like cookies, crackers and even dog treats containing peanut butter could be tainted.

The news is leaving store owners and health inspectors racing to keep up with an ever-growing recall list.

As the owner of one of the more popular Italian stores in the city, Jimmy Sunseri is used to fielding lots of questions about his authentic food. But these days, many customers are asking about products with peanut butter.

"It's more a matter of making customers truly aware and truly cognizant as to what is really going on with the recall," Sunseri said.

So far the salmonella outbreak has killed eight people and sickened more than 500 others nationwide, including 14 cases in Pennsylvania. One of those cases was in Butler County.

Stores have scrambled to keep tabs on and remove any of the recalled products. And the list just got longer.

"If there was a problem, it should have been rectified. And most definitely, that product should not have been allowed to be shipped," Sunseri said.

Sunseri is referring to a peanut butter plant in Georgia identified as the source of the salmonella. FDA officials now say on multiple occasions, some of its products tested positive for salmonella, but were shipped anyway after a second test came back negative, forcing the FDA to expand the recall by two years..

For Allegheny County health investigators, it means visiting more businesses.

"They're inspecting a few hundred a day. And as part of those inspections they're checking with every establishment to make sure that they're aware of the recall, and that they have the most up-to-date recall list," said Guillermo Cole of the Allegheny County health department.

Shoppers also need to stay abreast of the latest information.

"I put a lot of faith into making sure I'm up on the news and finding out what we need to pay attention to," said Mike Daninhirsch, a shopper in McCandless.

Giant Eagle told Channel 4 it has programmed its registers to block the sale of any recalled item. Costco and Sam's Club recently notified customers who bought potentially tainted items before the recall.

George Obama, Obama's Half Brother, Arrested On Drug Charge In Kenya

Your Ad Here

NAIROBI, Kenya — The half-brother of President Barack Obama was arrested for alleged possession of marijuana on Saturday near his home in a Nairobi shantytown, police said.

George Obama, who is in his 20s and barely knows the president, had one joint of marijuana on him, said Joshua Omokulongolo, the police chief in the area.

"He is not a drug peddler," Omokulongolo told The Associated Press. "But it's illegal, it's a banned substance."

George Obama has a court appearance scheduled Monday morning.

He and the president have the same father, who died in a car crash in 1982.

Several of President Obama's Kenyan relatives went to Washington, D.C., for his inauguration, but George was not among them. He lives in Huruma with extended family.

Media reports about him surfaced over the summer, after a magazine article said he lived in a shack and earned a dollar a day. George Obama has called the reports insulting.

"I'm proud of how I live," he told The Associated Press in an interview over the summer. "(The media) are tarnishing the family name."

He also said he was studying to be a mechanic and works with a local youth group in Huruma.

In President Obama's book "Dreams From My Father," he describes George Obama as "a handsome, roundheaded boy with a wary gaze."

George is the youngest of the senior Obama's seven children, born six months before his father died.

Tour bus crash near Hoover Dam kills 7

A tour bus carrying Chinese nationals overturned on a highway near the Hoover Dam on Friday, killing seven people and injuring at least 10 others, authorities said.

Six fatalities were confirmed at the scene, about 190 miles northwest of Phoenix; a seventh person died at a Las Vegas hospital, said Cmdr. Dean Nyhart of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Nyhart said investigators were struggling to identify the injured and were not certain how many people were on the 24-passenger bus or how many had been transported to hospitals in Kingman and Las Vegas.

The bus was traveling north on U.S. 93 when it veered left and then right across the median, Nyhart said. It rolled at least once before stopping.

He believes all but one of the victims killed at the scene had been ejected from the bus.

Nyhart said five people had suffered life-threatening injuries. "We're hopeful that those people can be stabilized and at least the death toll stop where it is," he said.

6 Dead in West Virginia Plane Crash

Shortly before the crash Friday, the pilot radioed the nearby airport, warning that the plane was running out of fuel. Witnesses said the aircraft was flying low, then the electricity went out.

"The pilot issued a mayday," said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters. "The mayday was based on low fuel."

Officials initially said three people had died in the crash, but later revised the death toll to six. The Piper PA-34 crashed less than two miles from the Tri-State Airport near the Ohio and Kentucky state lines.

Peters said Tri-State controllers were working with the pilot when the plane made a sudden 180-degree turn and they lost contact.

FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac didn't know where the plane had taken off from or where it was headed.

Witness Chris Smith was outside with his daughter when he saw the plane go down.

"It was flying way too low," he told The Herald Dispatch of Huntington. "It was flying so low I could have thrown a rock up and hit the bottom of the plane."

Smith's wife, Amanda, said she heard a loud crash and saw nearby power lines shake. Then the lights went out.

"My husband ran in with my daughter because they were sleigh riding and said, 'Call 911. A plane crashed,"' Smith told the newspaper.

Appalachian Power confirmed the plane hit a transmission line, but spokesman Phil Moye said power to the area was only briefly affected.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

The plane is registered to Wilmington, Del.-based Wesvin Inc.

'The Uninvited' review

The Uninvited Review :
Running time: 87 minutes
Rated : PG-13
Cast : Elizabeth Banks - Rachel Emily Browning - Anna Arielle Kebbel - Alex David Strathairn - Steven Jesse Moss - Matt
Director : Thomas Guard, Charles Guard
Genre : Horror

Official Movie Web Site: http://www.uninvitedmovie.com

Be the first to review

After Anna (Emily Browning) is released from a mental institution, she and her sister Alex (Arielle Kebbel) become convinced that their dad’s (David Strathairn of “Good Night, and Good Luck”) new girlfriend Rachel (Elizabeth Banks) is responsible for the fire that killed the girls’ mother. This seems likely since Rachel, a nurse who cared for the deceased, makes no effort to hide her menacing glares and fits the profile of another nurse who allegedly knocked off a mom and her kids just to cozy up next to the dad. But wait, what’s up with Anna seeing deranged visions of her undead mom slinking around the house or the creepy redheaded girl who won’t go away?

The buzz: This remake of the 2003 Korean flick “A Tale of Two Sisters” is the second un-horror movie of the month (after “The Unborn”) and boasts a title that appears to have nothing to do with the movie. (No invitations in sight; what was wrong with calling it “Hot Killer Nurse”?) What’s more intriguing about this bland run through the creak-shriek-boom routine is the presence of Banks (“W.,” “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”), a blossoming star who will likely be the only actress to ever appear as a first lady and a porn star in the same month.

The verdict: More lame than terrible, “The Uninvited” is still a pesky strand of pointless, offering nothing new and pathetically dry versions of last week’s bologna. The twist—what, you didn’t think there would be one?—isn't necessary or effective, and turns an already grueling take on the grieving process into an even more insulting waste of time. Since pros like Banks and Strathairn don't make an impression or embarrass themselves, they have nothing to be afraid of. But neither do you.

Did you know? If you’re looking to skirt a question about whether or not you’re drunk, Alex offers an obvious yet vague cover to neither confirm nor deny: “I went to a party, and drinks were served.” Sounds like someone has a career in politics ahead of her.

In the early 1960's, Eddie Wilson (Michael Pare) and his band The Cruisers enjoyed a brief fling with success, but their career came to a halt when Eddie's badly damaged car was discovered in an accident on a bridge. However, Eddie's body was never found, and years later, a reissue of the group's only album sparks rumors that the mysterious Eddie might still be alive. Frank Ridgeway (Tom Berenger), Eddie's former piano player and lyricist, finds himself trailed by Maggie Foley (Ellen Barkin), a reporter trying to find out the truth about Eddie, as well as another former bandmate who wants Frank to join his revamped version of the Cruisers -- and is trying to track down the tapes for the Cruisers' unreleased second album. While not a box-office success on its original release, Eddie and the Cruisers developed a following after its showings on cable television and release on videotape; this led to the belated success of the film's soundtrack album, featuring a number of bombastic neo-Springsteen numbers by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. Beaver Brown saxophonist Michael "Tunes" Antunes plays Wendell, the Cruisers' sax player and Eddie's best friend (despite the fact that we never hear him speak). ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

What's On Tonight: Football Creeps In

There's no getting away from the gravitational pull of Super Bowl Weekend, with football themes emerging in new episodes of a couple of shows.

On "Monk" (USA, 9 p.m.), the fussy detective scores tickets to the big playoff game but has to solve an attempted murder in the parking lot first (guest star: Bob Costas).

On "Psych" (USA, 10 p.m.), Shawn and Gus sign up for a football training after a foot of a professional kicker is found.

Elsewhere, there is the 2007 spoof of sports movies, "The Comebacks" (Cinemax, 8:30 p.m.) with David Koechner as a struggling football coach. Football is of course "The Game" (The CW, 8:30 p.m.) of which the title of the comedy speaks. And let's not forget about a new episode of "Friday Night Lights" in which Katie McCoy volunteers to host the annual players' cookout.

But football is by no means the only sport on TV tonight. Rock climbing is the sport on "Numb3rs" (CBS, 10 p.m.); paintball on "Wife Swap" (ABC, 8 p.m.). "Happy Gilmore" (Bravo, 9 p.m.) is about golf.. "Smokey and the Bandit II" (CMT 9 p.m.) is about cross country racing (isn't it?). And there is whatever it is they do on "Friday Night SmackDown!" (MyNetwork TV, 8 p.m.).

After the American drone bombing of Pakistan, the policy is questioned on "Bill Moyers Journal" (CPTV, 9 p.m.). The stimulus plan stimulates the panel on "Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal" (CPTV, 8 p.m.).

The nationalizing of banks pops up on "NOW" (WGBY, Channel 57, 8:30 p.m.; CPTV, 10 p.m.).

The reality series "13: Fear is Real" (The CW, 9 p.m.) has been moved to Friday nights.

"Wolverine and the X-men" (Nicktoons, 8 p.m.) did a bang-up job in its premiere last week as "the network's highest rated original series premiere ever with kids and boys," Nicktoons said. Doesn't hurt that there's a new Wolverine movie coming out.

Southern Gothic is the theme on Turner Classic Movies, with screenings of "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" (8 p.m.), "Sweet Bird of Youth" (10:30 p.m.) and "The Night of the Nunter" (12:45 a.m.). Later, a pair of rock stories from the 1980s: "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains" (TCM, 2:30 a.m.) with Diane Lane leading an all girl band, and "Eddie and the Cruisers" (TCM, 4 a.m.).

NBA action includes Celtics at Pistons (CSN, ESPN), Nets at Hawks (YES, 7:30 p.m.) and Warriors at Hornets (ESPN, 9:30 p.m.

Prison employee sentenced to prison for having sex with inmate * Story Highlights * Former prison secretary Janine Sligar had sex with inmat

Your Ad Here

A former prison secretary has been sentenced to six months in federal prison for having sex with an inmate she was supposed to be supervising, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office in the District of Colorado said Friday.

Janine Sligar, 47, of Wray, Colorado, was sentenced Thursday for sexual abuse of a ward. After serving her sentence, she will serve five years of supervised release and must register as a sex offender, spokesman Jeff Dorschner said in a news release.

Sligar, who must surrender to a facility designated by the Bureau of Prisons on March 2, did not respond to a telephone call to her home for comment.

She was indicted in July by a federal grand jury in Denver and pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in October.

According to the plea agreement, Sligar, a 14-year Bureau of Prisons veteran, said she and inmate Eric McClain met in February 2007, when he was assigned to clean her office.

"They began to have conversations and realized they had similar interests," the plea agreement said.

That summer, they initiated a sexual relationship that included 10 to 20 sessions of oral sex and sexual intercourse, ending in October 2007, it said.

The liaisons primarily occurred in a staff restroom in the housing unit at the Federal Prison Camp in Florence, Colorado, according to the agreement.

Sligar, who acknowledged having detailed her activities in a journal, said she obtained a cell phone with a non-local phone number so McClain could call her without raising suspicion and admitted she gave him contraband that included photographs with explicit sexual poses, the plea agreement added.

"Defendant also admitted using her cell phone camera to take graphic pictures of a sexual nature which depict defendant and this inmate," it said.

Authorities began investigating the incident after receiving a tip about the inappropriate relationship. They then learned that Sligar had changed the primary beneficiary on an insurance policy from her children to McClain. A subsequent search of her home turned up the journal and photographs.

Film actor and comedian Nagesh passed away

Actor Nagesh was one of the famous comedians in Tamil Cinema Industry during 1970’s. He was best known for his comedy and dance during that period. He had also got many awards and had a remarkable place in everyone’s heart because of his act. But Tamil Cinema Industry has lost actor Nagesh. Actor Nagesh died today. He was the precious diamond for Tamil cinema. He was suffering from severe heart disease for the past two months and was admitted in hospital. He returned back with good health a few weeks before. But suddenly he died today morning. Overall today is a mourning day for Tamil cinema industry.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Even when the charismatic MGR and the versatile Sivaji Ganesan were ruling the roost, Nagesh managed to always have the 'last laugh'. One of the most acclaimed comedians in Tamil film history, his name evokes mixed reactions in the minds of Tamil film audiences. This is because he sparkled not only as a comedian but also as a character artiste who with his sensitive performance in films like Neer Kumizhi and Edhir Neechal and Server Sundaram moved viewers to tears.

Born into a brahmin household, he left home for Chennai to seek his fortune. In Chennai he stayed in a one-room tenement with lyricist Vaali and actor Srikkanth. The play 'Kambar Ramayanam' inspired him to ask the Secretary of the Railway's Cultural Association to give him a small role to act. Given the role of a man with stomach pain, he performed with elan to earn the praise of the then Superstar - MGR, who was the chief guest.

Producer Balaji who first spotted him, gave him his break in films. Some of his most notable films include Thiruvillaiyaadal, Kaathalikka Neramillai, Thillaana Moganaambaal and Apoorva Raagangal.

Nagesh is a self-taught man who believes that an actor can learn from watching life and its characters. It is said that he often sat in his car on busy roadsides and watched people on the streets, to grasp mannerisms that he would later reproduce on screen. Much of his body language (including his famed dancing routines) were inspired by the legendary comedian Jerry Lewis.

Elaborate arrangements for Basant Panchami bathing

SANGAM (ALLAHABAD): The Mela police, on Friday, reviewed the security arrangements in and around the area for Basant Panchmi bathing on Saturday.
Around 40 lakh pilgrims are expected to take a holy dip on the occasion.

The police checked all the vehicles coming to Allahabad.

Meanwhile, the Mela administration also checked the services to be offered to the pilgrims and asked health department to keep the area clean.

What fun it used to be. Here I am slogging it out at 12 in the night, hoping that vasanta panchami 2009 will bring good luck to me and Binaryday alike.

I have lost my book of saraswati mantra or saraswati vandana. Let me know if anyone knows an online source for the same.

Local Surfers' Close Call With A Jumping Shark

HUTCHINSON ISLAND, FL--Spinner sharks migrate close to the Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast shores this time of year. They look ominous when photographed from above but imagine seeing one of these up close!Three local men did and they have the amazing video to prove it!They are longtime surfers and always have a videocamera with them to document the best waves.

Recently off Hutchinson Island they saw a 6 to 7 foot spinner shark shooting out of the water and pirouetting 5 or 6 times ---all within a few feet of where they were surfing.Surfer Kevin Barry says, "After seeing the video it was more of a wow! rather than seeing the splash out of the corner of your eye..when you slowed the video down and see the size of the shark..every bit of it."

John Binchani, another local surfer says, "I haven't seen anything like it and with how frequently they jump out of the water and how many cell phones and cameras there are on the beach...it's unique we got it."Their video has made the rounds on the internet. The three surfing friends say they're working to put together a video of a "day in the life" of a Florida surfer...and this is certainly one of the highlights.

Clearing up EFCA facts

Your Ad Here

It’s amazing how quickly a catchphrase can start echoing through the media. Sometimes the source is popular culture: remember “Where’s the beef?” from the 1980s? Sometimes it’s a bit more insidious.

Right now, for example, what’s filtering through the Colorado media is the distorted talking point that proposed federal legislation dealing with organized labor, the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), would eliminate the right of workers to hold a secret-ballot vote on organizing their workplaces.

Although the highest-profile opposition has come from conservative voices, the pros and cons of the EFCA have generated considerable debate on both ends of the political spectrum.

Factually misrepresented

However, what Colorado newspaper readers and radio listeners are being told about the EFCA by news and opinion sources factually misrepresents the legislation.

For an issue as serious as the EFCA, readers and listeners should demand serious media coverage and editorial discussion. They haven’t been getting it.

What they have been getting from some of the state’s largest newspapers and radio stations are assertions that the EFCA “would eliminate the secret ballot in union-organizing elections,” that it “takes away workers’ right for a private vote on unions,” or that it “effectively eliminates the secret ballot vote among workers when forming a union.”

The House Committee on Education and Labor has described the claim that “[t]he Employee Free Choice Act abolishes the National Labor Relations Board’s ‘secret ballot’ election process” as a “myth.” The committee states on its Web site: “The Employee Free Choice Act would make that choice — whether to use the NLRB election process or majority sign-up — a majority choice of the employees, not the employer.”

As The New York Times reported, “Business groups have attacked the legislation because it would take away employers’ right to insist on holding a secret-ballot election to determine whether workers favored unionization.”

That’s pretty clear, right? Apparently the word hasn’t reached some of the media in Colorado, where a variety of news reports and editorial comments have parroted the inaccurate claim that EFCA would strip workers of the right to a secret-ballot union organizing election.

Cecil Suwal, Spitzer-Linked New York Madam, Gets Six Months

Your Ad Here

NEW YORK — A college student who managed the prostitution ring that brought down former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer was sentenced Thursday to six months in prison.

Cecil Suwal, 24, of New York, cried as she apologized and asked for mercy from U.S. District Judge Barbara S. Jones.

"It is my aim to prevent others, especially young girls, from making the kind of mistakes that I have made," Suwal said.

She pleaded guilty last year to money laundering, conspiracy and conspiring to promote prostitution.

The federal probation department had recommended that Suwal receive no prison time. Prosecutors had sought roughly two years.

Suwal was 18 when she got involved with a man nearly three times her age. She was Mark Brener's "paramour, his companion and ultimately his assistant" at the Emperors Club VIP, a $5,500-an-hour escort service, said defense attorney Alberto A. Ebanks.

Ebanks said Brener's psychological domination left Suwal incapable of making independent decisions. Her attorney said she even had a tattoo on her body reading "property of Mark Brener."

But Ebanks said Suwal has "permanently severed the umbilical cord from Brener," adding that she attended college last semester, did charity work, had steady appropriate employment and had volunteered for a forensic psychological evaluation.

The federal judge credited Suwal for going to "extraordinary lengths to put her life back on track" but said it could not erase the fact that she had played a central role in the escort service.

Brener, 63, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit a prostitution offense and conspiracy to commit money laundering. He faces between 2 and 2 1/2 years in prison.

The judge said Suwal opened bank accounts for shell businesses created to hide the true nature of the operation, paid prostitutes and arranged meetings with clients.

It was one such meeting in a Washington hotel last February that snared Spitzer and led to his March resignation as governor.

Prosecutors announced in November they would not charge Spitzer after investigators found no evidence that he misused public or campaign funds for prostitution. The federal government typically does not prosecute clients of prostitution rings.

Booking agent Tanya Robin Hollander of Rhinebeck, N.Y., pleaded guilty to a prostitution conspiracy and was sentenced to a year of probation. Another booking agent, Temeka Lewis, who is enrolled at the University of Virginia, is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to promoting prostitution and money laundering.

Wing Bowl 17 Primed Hits Philadelphia; Contestants Battle for 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman

Wing Bowl 2009 Will Have 27 Contestants Compete to See Who Can Eat the Most Wings with Prizes Going to the Winner and Their Entourage.

Wing Bowl 17 is coming to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Wing Bowl 17 will pit some of the best wing eaters in the world against each other to decide the 2009 Wing Bowl Champion. The competition will all come down to the final 27 contestants, all of which would love to own the title of Wing Bowl Champion, and who all bring their own unique eating styles to the competition. When Wing Bowl 17 gets underway on Friday morning, thousands of fans will get to watch as the new Wing Champion is crowned.

Wing Bowl 17 is set to take place at 5:30am on Friday, January 30th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The competition will take place at the Wachovia Center, where a sold out crowd will have the chance to watch a new competitor take over the title. This year's competition had a couple of rule changes, including limiting the field of competitors to only amateur contestants, allowing for there to be a changing of the guard in the title holder. According to the Wing Bowl web-site, only 3 different people had won over the past 8 years, and this was felt to be a good way to get some new blood into the battle.

The Wing Bowl is definitely a competition of over-eaters, and you have to be a fan of wings in order to get anything out of a competition like this. In the world of eating competitions though, it is quite serious business, with people competing who have trained on how to eat their wings the fastest, and seeing how many they can do in a specific period of time. It will be a challenge for new-comers to live up to the feats that have been accomplished in the past, and it will be interesting to see whether a brand new name can live up to the billing of Wing Bowl Champion.

Angela Suleman: Mother of California Octuplets Has 6 Other Children

Your Ad Here

Whittier, California is home to Angela Suleman. Prior to giving birth to eight babies earlier this week, she was living with her parents in a neat cul-de-sac neighborhood with her other six children, ages 7,6,5,3 and twin 2 year olds.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the woman’s partner will be returning to his job as a contract worker in Iraq in order to help support Suleman and her expanded family. The couple’s marital status is unclear.

Suleman sought fertility treatment and was implanted with numerous embryos last year and according to the mother, they all happened to take. Throughout the pregnancy, doctors thought there were seven babies. The surprise eighth baby shocked the massive delivery team that was assembled at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Bellflower, California.

Medical ethicists and fertility specialists were quick to share their arguments against the dangerous practice of implanting more than two embryo at one time. The mother was given counseling on selective reduction early on in her pregnancy but decided against terminating any of the babies.

Dr. Harold Henry, the woman’s physician said, “Our goal is to provide the best care possible no matter what the situation or circumstances are. What I do is just explain the facts. I always talk about the risks. The mother weights those options, and she chooses the option based on spiritual or personal makeup.”

The births are only the second set of octuplets successfully delivered in the U.S. The Chukwu family of Houston is raising seven children. One of their babies died shortly after birth.

Angela Suleman, new mother of the octuplets issued this statement:

“We understand that you are all curious about the arrival of the octuplets, and we appreciate your respect for our family’s privacy. Please know in our own time, we will share additional details about this miraculous experience. The babies continue to grow strong every day and make good progress. My family and I are ecstatic about their arrival. Needless to say, the eighth was a surprise to us all, but a blessing as well. We thank all of you for the positive thoughts, prayers and generosity.”

The hospital has been flooded with gift baskets, sealed envelopes and flowers for the new mother.

Bacon belly bomb is a big hit

Never underestimate the power of bacon — or the Internet.

Two local barbecue-lovin’ guys have found themselves the toast of the bacon world thanks to a recipe calling for just two main ingredients: bacon (two pounds of it) and Italian sausage (two pounds of that). The sausage is wrapped in a basket-weaved blanket of bacon, and for good measure there’s even more bacon inside. Sweet KC-style sauce, too.

Then you smoke it. In a backyard smoker.

Aaron Chronister and Jason Day, who compete in barbecue circles as Burnt Finger BBQ, call this meat missile “Bacon Explosion.” And explode it has: first online (it helps that Chronister is an Internet marketer), then Wednesday on the cover of The New York Times’ food section (headline: “Take Bacon. Add Sausage. Blog”), then online some more.

Anyone doubt that Kansas City is the barbecue capital of the world?

All told, Chronister and Day say the Bacon Explosion recipe on their site, www.bbqaddicts.com., has attracted 510,000 page views since it was posted just before Christmas; 90,000 alone on Wednesday.

Now, thanks to the Times story, the bacon buds are bound for New York, where they’ll smoke their sausage Friday morning in Times Square. That’ll be on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” show. Then they’ll head south to Tampa, Fla., to do some Super Bowl tailgating Sunday on another Fox channel. Two book publishers e-mailed Wednesday and want to talk.

This whole thing started when a Web site called Bacon Today asked Chronister and Day if they had any bacon barbecue recipes. “The longer I thought about it,” Day wrote on bbqaddicts.com, “the more I wanted to step it up a notch and clog a few arteries for those guys.”

Chronister, 32, of Kansas City, and Day, 27, of Roeland Park, admit they’re not the first foodies to combine the two pork products in a barbecue recipe. But you have to give ’em credit for a catchy name.

More than that, you have to give them credit for knowing how to exploit the Internet. Chronister’s brilliant move was posting on Twitter, a site that sends out short Web-based text messages. His 1,200 Twitter “followers” — mostly other Internet marketers and “social network influencers” — took it from there.

Some of them thumbs-upped the Bacon Explosion post on a site called StumbleUpon, which suggests Web pages based on a user’s interests. The recipe became so hot there it went to the site’s front page.

Other sites, such as Digg and Del.icio.us, also helped the recipe go viral. There’s a Bacon Explosion fan page on Facebook. On YouTube, you can watch gas grills catching on fire when the Bacon Explosion log almost literally explodes. (Hint: Cooking in a smoker, with indirect heat, is the recommended method. Dripping bacon grease and an open flame are a dangerous combination.)

Chronister and Day do not claim, by the way, that Bacon Explosion is health food. Just one little sandwich — a couple of 1/4 -inch to 1/2 -inch rounds of meat on a buttermilk biscuit — “sits heavy,” Day says. The entire meat log contains something like 5,000 calories and 500 grams of fat.

One of the first comments posted in response to the recipe: “They should make drive-through angioplasty. It would make this much easier.”

Amy Winn of the Kansas City Barbeque Society hadn’t heard of the Bacon Explosion until The Star called her, but she’d like to try it.

DRDO eyes EADS role in Tejas

Your Ad Here

The DRDO and HAL are reportedly eyeing a prominent role for EADS in the development of the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA).

The organisation's Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has considered offering the company $20 million to help increase the aircraft's flight envelope and attack vector.

"We have proposed to award the contract to the EADS to help us in carrying out the flight trials of the aircraft and see how its flight envelope can be increased," a DRDO official told Indopia.

The official explained that EADS had significant experience in the development of aircraft for its member partners and could help evaluate the Tejas "without endangering it".

The Tejas is constructed of aluminium-lithium alloys, carbon-fibre composites and titanium. Global Security notes that the LCA integrates modern design concepts with advanced technology, including relaxed static stability, flyby-wire flight controls, multi-mode radar, digital avionics and a flat rated engine.

The LCA is equipped with eight external hardpoints to carry stores, with three under each wing. A 23mm twin barrelled GSh-23 gun capable of a 50 round-per-second burst rate is located under the starboard air intake. In addition, the Tejas can be armed with air-to-air, air-to-ground and anti-ship missiles, as well as precision-guided munitions, rockets and bombs.

Williams sisters wins Australian Open doubles

Your Ad Here

Serena and Venus Williams teamed to win their eighth Grand Slam doubles title Friday in the Australian Open, a day before Serena's bid for a 10th major singles crown.

The Williams sisters beat Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-3, 6-3 for their third doubles championship in Australia.

The roof was closed at Rod Laver Arena, with outside temperatures topping 113 degrees by late afternoon on the third day of a heat wave.

"I'd like to thank Serena for being the best partner," Venus said. "I wouldn't want to play with anyone else. She's amazing."

The sisters also combined to win the Olympic gold medal in Beijing last year.

Playing under cover was the ideal warmup for Serena ahead of her singles final against third-seeded Dinara Safina on Saturday night.

"I think it definitely helps my singles," Serena said. "It definitely does serve as practice. Although when I'm practicing, like today I was practicing singles instead of doubles, for my match. So I'm having a lot of practices and a lot of workouts. I just look at it like I'm burning lots of calories."

Safina, the younger sister of 2005 Australian Open men's champion and former No. 1-ranked Marat Safin, has never won a major.

The 22-year-old Russian's best previous run at a Grand Slam event ended in a loss to Ana Ivanovic in the French Open final.

Serena Williams has won the Australian title every odd-numbered year since 2003 and has nine singles majors overall.

Roger Federer is only one way from equaling Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam singles titles.

Andy Roddick was right there when Sampras won his 14th. And Roddick was right there again when Federer moved within one victory of matching the record.

After a scorching day, Federer beat Roddick 6-2, 7-5, 7-5 in more manageable 91-degree heat Thursday night in the semifinals.

The Swiss star will be playing in his 18th Grand Slam final but won't know his opponent until Friday night, when Spanish left-handers Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco meet in the other semifinal.

It was Federer's seventh straight win over Roddick in a major and put his overall record in this matchup at 16-2. Federer's loss to Roddick in Miami last year now seems like an aberration.

Roddick lost to Sampras in straight sets in the quarterfinals at the 2002 U.S. Open when he was a 20-year-old emerging talent. Sampras, then 31 and in his 52nd major, retired after beating Andre Agassi two matches later to win the U.S. Open.

Roddick won the next year at Flushing Meadows and held the No. 1 ranking in 2003, just as Federer was about to embark on an astonishing run.

"When Pete did it — I was a part of that one, too — everyone was saying how kind of lofty of an achievement it was," Roddick said. "I don't know if we thought we would see it any time soon. Little did we know (Federer) was going to start it the next year and go after it."

Roddick is 26, a year younger than Federer.

"It's like my childhood was Pete, and now it's kind of my grown life is Roger," Roddick said. "I guess Roger is a contemporary of mine, which didn't lessen the affect. I see Pete and Andre and I still get a little jittery. It's crazy to think it's come full circle and the magnitude of the numbers (Federer's) accomplished, it's pretty scary if you sit down and go through what it takes to accomplish that."

Federer's focus has been increasingly sharp since he was forced to come back from two sets down to beat Tomas Berdych in the fourth round. In his quarterfinal, he convincingly took down No. 8-ranked Juan Martin del Potro, then did the same against Roddick.

IBM Gets Additional Business From IDEA Cellular to Integrate IT Operations in Two More Service Areas in India

Eight-Year Transformation Services Contract Includes Integration of Software Applications, Hardware, Data Center Operations, IT Help-Desk and Transition Services

IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that it will integrate the end-to-end information technology (IT) operations of IDEA Cellular, a leading telecom operator, in two service areas of Punjab and Karnataka in India. Through the acquisition of Spice Communications, IDEA Cellular has recently launched its services in the two areas with a subscriber base of approximately four million.

The scope of the eight-year agreement, signed in December 2008, includes integration, transition and migration of existing Spice applications, hardware, packages and products to the IDEA Transformed Applications platform. As part of the deal, IBM will manage all IT operations and services for IDEA's business in Punjab and Karnataka. In addition, IBM will migrate the IT help desk services to its state-of-the-art centralized helpdesk in Pune.

The complete integration, transition and migration of the IT operations and business processes of Spice Communications with IDEA is expected to be completed within 27 months and is valued at US$19.2 million (Rs. 86 crores). After completing the transition, IBM will manage IT operations in the two service areas, under the existing outsourcing services contract with IDEA.

"IBM has showcased in-depth knowledge and expertise in managing and augmenting IDEA's IT infrastructure and business processes," said Mr. Prakash Paranjape, Chief Information Officer, IDEA Cellular. "Our experience with IBM over the last two years gives us confidence that the two new service areas will be integrated seamlessly into the IDEA network."

The deal builds on the existing 10-year business transformation pact that IBM had signed with IDEA Cellular in March 2007 to integrate, innovate and transform IDEA's business processes and IT infrastructure. The pact is designed on an innovative risk-reward sharing model that is based on a shared revenue arrangement. It covered all of IDEA's existing operations, expansion into new circles and potential new additions. In June 2007, IBM signed another 10-year contract to deploy, integrate, innovate and transform IDEA's Interactive Voice Response Self-Service project.

Commenting on the extended partnership, Ashish Kumar, IBM Vice President, Client Services in India and Southeast Asia, said, "This agreement further strengthens our relationship with IDEA Cellular. The integration of Spice Communication into IDEA Cellular's IT infrastructure will help showcase some of the best practices and deep domain knowledge within IBM. This will allow IDEA to provide its stakeholders with greater value, scalability and service delivery innovation. We are delighted to extend this partnership with IDEA Cellular."

Spice’s Modi Makes $408 Million Offer for Control of Satyam

Your Ad Here

Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- B. K. Modi, who sold his stake in Spice Communications Ltd. to Idea Cellular Ltd., has offered to buy a 51 percent stake in Satyam Computer Services Ltd. for 20 billion rupees ($408 million), the Spice Corp. chairman said.

“We have sent a proposal to the board as well as the government,” Modi said today in a telephone interview from New Delhi. “Spice is in information, communication and entertainment and this aligns with our present business.”

Spice Innovation, Modi’s closely held New Delhi-based holding company, has offered the cash in exchange for preference shares from the Hyderabad-based Satyam, he said.

Satyam’s state-appointed board has hired Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Avendus Capital Ltd. to find strategic investors or a buyer for the provider at the center of India’s largest corporate fraud inquiry as it seeks funds to pay salaries and run the business. It has yet to name a chief executive officer for the company three weeks after founder Ramalinga Raju was arrested.

“The key thing is that the money must go into the company,” Modi said. The 20 billion rupees is the amount Satyam needs to run its operations and “we have the money,” he said.

Satyam’s government-appointed directors said on Jan. 27 they had organized money to pay salaries for January and were set to complete funding arrangements for meeting the company’s immediate needs. The provider faces a severe cash crunch since Raju said Jan. 7 he’d inflated assets by $1 billion and quit as chairman.

The software company, which is being investigated by India’s fraud office, auditing body, markets regulator and police, also faces U.S. class-action lawsuits after Raju admitted to inflating earnings for “several years.”

Potential Buyers

Satyam has attracted interest from several potential buyers and the provider said Jan. 27 it has no plans to cede control to Larsen & Toubro Ltd. after the nation’s biggest engineering company tripled its stake to 12 percent. Chairman A.M. Naik said Larsen may lift its holding in Satyam to 15 percent, the threshold for an offer to investors under Indian takeover rules.

Modi said he plans to change Satyam’s brand name if he succeeds in acquiring the company and said Spice was familiar with regulations in the markets where Satyam operated and was prepared to deal with any legal action the provider may face.

“If we invest our main focus will be on how to revive the company and how to grow it,” he said. “We have our lawyers and we know how to deal with the lawsuits.”

Movie Review: Victory; Star cast: Hurman Baweja,
Amrita Rao, Anupam Kher and Gulshan Grover;
Director: Ajitpal Mangat;
Rating: **; Is a huge let down.

Vijay Shekhawat (Hurman) a Jaisalmer boy after a lot of struggle manages to fulfill his father’s (Anupam Kher) dream of making it to the Indian cricket team. With a great debut he wins not just fans but a lot of endorsement deals and lucrative contracts. Success begins to spoil and distancing him from his lady love (Amrita Rao) back home. Blinded by success and the taste of the high society life he losses both focus and form. He is then understandably dumped by the selectors. Following which, his father gets a heart attack. Vijay then decides to mend his mistakes and fight his way back to the team. In final match, despite a severe head injury he manages to get India a near impossible win.

A sports film is always crippled with a same storyline that of a underdog, his rise then fall and subsequent rise back to gain the impossible victory. This film is no different. But one expects atleast some sense of creativity wherein the interest is kept alive throughout. Twenty minutes into the film and one somehow senses whats in store. So full of cliches and melodrama is the film that sometimes you begin to wonder did the makers intend to take the viewers for a ride. If the melodrama was intended to bring in that emotional connect with the audience then the writer-director have clearly failed as throughout the film the emotional impact is clearly missing. Also nowhere does the lead character’s passion for the game comes across. Also one fails to understand the need of Hurman’s character using swear words for his opponents. Wear is your sporting spirit dude is what we wish to ask him! His character therefore fails to evoke any sympathy from the audience. The biggest high point of sports films are games shown in the film. But here they are biggest drawbacks. Not only there are just a very few games but also what are shown are simply thanda! There is total lack of edge of the seat excitement which was very much needed. Also homework by the makers is clearly lacking if they intended to show the ‘real’ behind the scenes happenings of the cricket match for example the dressing room interactions etc. Just putting in famous national-international cricketing names don’t necessarily give the film authenticity.

One feels really sad for Hurman Baweja whose tremendous hard work is noticeable in every single scene but is mightily let down by a pathetic script and listless direction by debutante Ajitpal Mangat. Amrita Rao reprises her typical simple small town girl act for the nth time. She looks very pretty though. Anupam Kher after a point of time starts grating on your nerves with his screeching over melodramatic act. Gulshan Grover is just about okay.

The music doesn’t really register any impact as there are no full songs as well. The Balla Utha number mostly keeps playing in the background during the match sequences. But thankfully the songs are less.

The film is a complete let down in many departments and instead of wasting time on this film it is a better option to watch a re-run of any Indian cricket team match on TV or best spend your time watching the current India v/s Sri Lanka one day series.
