Your Ad Here

Evidently Fujitsu's decision to offer its LifeBook U820 convertible mini laptop with integrated 3G has been a raging success; otherwise, we're a bit uncertain as to why it would share the love with four other siblings. Starting right about now, WWAN lovers can order up a LifeBook T5010, T1010, P1630 and / or T2020 with built-in support for AT&T's BroadbandConnect HSUPA network. For those who like to live on the CDMA side of life, the outfit is planning to add EV-DO support in Q2 of this year, though we're not told which carrier will be selected to carry that torch.

Shush! Samsung Acme i8910 is Leaked

Your Ad Here

Be the first to hear it here, as we have exclusive leaked photos sent to Gaj-It showing Samsungs latest addition to their eclectic portfolio of mobile phones. This new, but very ‘hush hush’ arrival is the Samsung Acme i8910, however before your eyes start playing deceptive tricks with words, this phone does not resemble a bad case of acne…I mean acme! Far from it!

Leaked pictures below show that the Samsung Acme has a sleek and stylish exterior which has been taken from it bigger brother, the Samsung Omnia.

It is rumoured that it will include a 8 megapixel touchscreen cameraphone, which is no surprise for Samsung’s standards. As well as attracting the click happy bunch, it also includes GPS, HDMI, WiFi, 3.5mm socket, is DNLA and DivX compatible and offers HD recording. It will come in 8GB and 16GB versions and is expected to be a bit on the pricey side.

Now the specs sounds all to familiar to its predecessor the Samsung Omnia, except for memory boosting option of 16GB. There is no surprise that the some mobile phone experts have already been comparing it to the Apple iPhone. Apart from the a few differences I can definitely see the similarities, however only time will tell when this is released to see how it stacks up to its rival.

MIT creates a ‘sixth sense’ gadget: Less exciting than it sounds

Your Ad Here

Those eggheads at MIT are at it again, this time creating a “sixth sense” gadget. It’s basically a combined scanner and 3D projector (with a touchscreen-like surface). Say, for example, you’re at the store looking at different boxes of cereal. You scan the box of Lucky Charms with the gadget, which then scans the Internet for, I don’t know, nutritional information and a history of the product. Handy.

Or maybe you’re shopping for a used car—all you need to buy in this economy is two empty soda cans and a piece of tin foil—and want to know its crash history, if it has one. Scan your device, and bam, the information pops up in front of you like in Minority Report. Want to know what the reviews are like for that game you’re about to buy? Scan away, citizen! And yes, you’re able to manipulate the projection as if it were your iPhone.

The device itself—a Web cam, cellphone and a projector—is a wrist-mounted wonder that was put together for $300.

But don’t get your hopes up, since we’re still a good 10 years away from seeing anything even remotely close to this being manufactured on a large scale.

What, exactly, all of that has to do with the sixth sense—isn’t the sixth sense supposed to be premonition aka the Spider Sense?—I’m not sure.

Koncham Istam Koncham Kastam Moview Reivew

Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam, being called with pet title 'KIKK' has released today. The film has followed a typical muhurath by releasing at 1:01 PM instead of hitting screens at regular 11 AM show. Let us see how far that muhurath worked well with this movie and what the content is.
Story:
Geeta (Tamanna) is the daughter of a big man named Subrahmanyam (Nazar) in a village. She holds great love and affection for her father. And she happens to come to city for studying in a college. She stays with Gachibowli Diwakar and his wife (Brahmanandam and Hema). She develops good rapport with Prof Rajya Lakshmi (Ramya Krishna) in her college. Siddhu (Siddarth) is the son of Prof Rajya Lakshmi who leads the life of a play boy. Siddhu lives only with his mother for many years and his father Prakash Varma (Prakash Raj) lives abroad and earns big fame and money. He returns and the son Siddhu goes close to him. The friendship between son and father stands unique and strong. Siddhu loves Geeta as a routine treat in any film. But Subrahmanyam puts a condition that he would allow his daughter to marry Siddhu only when the parents of Siddhu are united. Then the real game starts for both Siddhu and Geeta to unite the separated couple. Whether they turned successful in that attempt becomes rest of the story.
Performances:
The film grooved in all major artistes and there is nothing less to speak about them.
Siddartha with his unique style of performance enticed again. Tamanna looked with lot of grace and beauty and has really stolen the show with her looks and expressions. She can stand as Madhuri Dixit in Tollywood if polished her performance and dance in a better way. She is gifted with elegance in screen presence.

======================================================================

Film: Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam
Rating: 3/5
Banner: Laxmi Narasimha Productions
Cast: Siddartha, Tamanna, Prakash Raj,Ramya Krishna, Venu Madhav, Brahmanandam, Nazar, Hema and others
Music: Shankar Ehasaan Loy
Cinematogrpahy: Vijay K Chander
Art: Chinna
Dialogues: Abburi Ravi
Screenplay: Deepak Raj
Editing: Srikar Prasad
Background score: Mani Sharma
Producer: Nallamalupu Bujji
Story, Direction: Kishore Kumar
=============================================================================
Ramya Krishna is ok but she would have given own dubbing for her character. The voice used for her hasn't suited. Being a senior actress, she should at least try to use her own voice inspiring from young artistes like Mamata Mohandas.
Prakash Raj did his best in fatherly role and it is completely different from what he has shown in Bommarillu.
Music stands on the top of all faculties. All the songs received great applause in theatre. It is true that songs could pull the narration of this flick in interesting way. The screenplay is slow and there are some hiccups in editing. The cinematography is marvelous and the film teaches a lesson how the mood can be elevated while picturing songs. Dialogues by Abburi Ravi are good and interesting.
Direction is good but still needs to be gripping. On a whole seriousness and sentiment dominated. Comedy by Brahmanandam hasn't given the punch that has promised at the introduction of his role.
Analysis:
The film is an out and out family entertainer and the main essence is how a young couple attempts to unite a separated old couple for making their love win and take to the altar of marriage. The theme is in fact interesting. The initial few minutes during titles recall the film 'Sangamam' but later things proved to be unique.
First half sounded average while the later half in second part sounded racy and better. On a whole it has got the class-content and teaches a moral 'keep only love and shun anger from relationships'. That's good attempt which deserves a mention.

CISCO Q2 RESULTS : 15 TO 20 PERCENT DROP IN REVENUE

Your Ad Here

NEW YORK (AP) -- Technology bellwether Cisco Systems Inc. said Wednesday that incoming orders declined dramatically in January, indicating that the shrinking economy has more pain in store for the industry.

Chief executive John Chambers said the company, the world's largest maker of computer networking gear, saw fewer and fewer orders as its latest quarter progressed. In November, orders were down 9 percent from the year before. In January, the drop was 20 percent.

"That was a bit of a shock," said analyst Erik Suppiger at Signal Hill Capital Group.
Cisco's fiscal second quarter ended Jan. 24, nearly a month after other technology companies that have reported their quarterly results recently. That means Cisco's results provide a window into future reports from the rest of the industry. Cisco is also sensitive to trends in the market because more than 80 percent of its revenue is from sales, rather than recurring service contracts.

Chambers projected a 15 percent to 20 percent drop in revenue in the current quarter. That would put revenue at $7.8 billion to $8.3 billion, below the average estimate of $8.7 billion projected by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.

Shares in San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco fell 71 cents, or 4.5 percent, to $15.13 in extended trading after Chamber's comments.

The decline in orders was spread across the globe, though Europe and Japan had a better appetite than the U.S. and emerging markets.

Switches and routers, Cisco's core products, saw the biggest declines. Revenue grew from services and some new, still minor businesses like videoconferencing.

As expected, the public sector was a bright spot, with orders up around 5 percent. Telecommunications service providers, meanwhile, cut their orders by about 20 percent.

For the just-ended quarter, sales were $9.1 billion, down 7.5 percent from a year ago. The company announced at the start of the quarter that it would cut back on discretionary expenses and freeze hiring. But it wasn't able to slash expenses as quickly as sales fell and its profit dropped 27 percent to $1.5 billion, or 26 cents per share, from $2.1 billion, or 33 cents per share, a year ago.

Excluding items, earnings were 32 cents per share, beating the average analyst estimate by 2 cents.

Cisco's goal is to save $1 billion in costs during the fiscal year, and executives said it was well on its way to achieving that.

Unlike many other technology companies, it hasn't yet announced big layoffs, and Chambers said it still hoped to avoid any.

But if business continues to deteriorate dramatically and layoffs become necessary, the cuts will likely involve at least 10 percent of Cisco's work force of 67,300, Chambers said.

"It needs to be a critical mass to justify the loss of business momentum, impact on employees and impact on key projects," the CEO said. "If we execute successfully ... we may be able to avoid broad downsizing events."

Cisco itself is well set to weather tough credit markets, ending the quarter with $29.5 billion in cash and equivalents. Executives repeated their intention to grab market share from weaker competitors in the downturn, as the company has done in previous economic troughs.

FORBES' RICHEST CEOS LIST : AMBANIS UP - LAKSHMI MITTAL SLIPS

Your Ad Here

American investor Warren Buffett has retained his top position on the annual list, but Indian-born steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal has been toppled from his last year's second position while Anil Ambani has moved up one place to sixth rank on this year's 'Forbes list of ten wealthiest CEOs'.

They have lost more than USD 13 billion from their combined wealth, but still the two Ambani brothers have moved higher on Forbes' latest list of the world's ten richest CEOs, while Sunil Mittal has joined the league and Lakshmi Mittal has slipped two places.

Legendary American investor Warren Buffett has retained his top position on the annual list, but Indian-born steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal has been toppled from his last year's second position by software major Oracle chief Larry Ellison.

Mittal has moved down to fourth position, while Mukesh Ambani, the elder of the two warring brothers, has jumped three positions to grab third rank this year.

The younger Ambani, Anil, has also moved up one place to sixth rank on this year's 'Forbes list of ten wealthiest CEOs'.

While another Indian business chief, Azim Premji, has moved out of the top-ten list, compatriot Sunil Mittal of Bharti Airtel has joined the league at ninth position.

IT major Wipro Chairman Premji was ranked ninth on the previous year's list. The total number of Indians on the list has remained unchanged at four on this year's list.

"Being a CEO isn't what it used to be. Crackdowns on corporate frills like private jets and over-the-top offices have become the norm, taking some of the fun -- but none of the stress -- out of running billion-dollar businesses," Forbes said.

About India's presence on the list, Forbes said there are four Indians on its list this year: "two industrialists, Mukesh Ambani and Lakshmi Mittal; and two telecom tycoons, Anil Ambani and Sunil Mittal."

"(The) Ambani brothers owe their hefty fortunes, in part, to inheritance. Following their father's death in 2002, they took over his industrial empire ... and attempted to run it together.

"The collaboration soon soured. After coming to blows over who ran the company, the two reached a bitter compromise, deciding that they and the company would best be served by spinning off and divvying up its various businesses.

"Today Mukesh runs petrochemicals giant Reliance Industries Ltd, while Anil oversees an array of companies including Reliance Communications, a phone and Internet outfit with 60 million customers," it added.

The magazine said that its list of the world's wealthiest CEOs was based on analysis of their financial stakes in firms controlled by them, as on January 23.
Buffett has been ranked first with USD 35.9 billion worth of shareholding, it said, adding that "there are not many people who can lose USD 25 billion in four months and still top the list of the world's wealthiest CEOs."

Oracle's Ellison has been ranked second with USD 19.7 billion, followed by Mukesh Ambani (USD 16.8 billion), Lakshmi Mittal (USD 13.2 billion), luxury goods major LVMH's Bernard Arnault (USD 12.2 billion), Anil Ambani (USD nine billion), Arabian bank Mashreq's Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair (USD seven billion), and Microsoft's Steve Ballmer (USD seven billion).

Sunil Mittal (USD 6.9 billion) and Japanese fashion retail major Fast Retailing's Tadashi Yanai (USD six billion) follow.

"We estimated ownership by sifting through each company's most recent financial filings and, where information was not readily available, talking to industry sources," Forbes said, adding that both CEOs and Managing Directors of public companies across the world were considered for the list.

About Mukesh Ambani, the report said he made it to third position despite a 62 per cent plunge in the shares of his group's flagship firm RIL since January last year.

On Lakshmi Mittal, it said that the 58-year-old has consistently ranked among the top five wealthiest people in the world, but his public holdings of ArcelorMittal took a dive in the second half of 2008, falling 73 per cent since June.

About Anil Ambani, the report said that "in the four years since a spat with older brother Mukesh led to the break-up of their family's assets, Anil, the younger of the two, has grown his telecom, energy and infrastructure businesses apace--only to see his shares decimated by the global economic slowdown."
"While some chief executives' jobs may be in peril, these 10 have stuck it out long enough to partake in what's left of the global economy. These have made our annual list of the world's wealthiest CEOs," it added.

Eight O’clock Coffee – Great Brand Letting Customers Pick Redesign

Your Ad Here

Eight O’clock Coffee is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a package redesign. But, they’re taking an interesting approach to the process – they’re letting their customers pick the final design. Making it even better, entrants into the contest can win five grand worth of groceries out of the deal.

Here’s what the company says about it in a press release:

This year marks Eight O’clock Coffee's 150th anniversary, making them one of the country's most time-honored brands. To celebrate this occasion, the coffee company is treating their packaging to a facelift -- and asking consumers to help pick the new look.

From February 1 through March 15, 2009, consumers can log on to CoffeeMakeover.com to view two new Eight O'Clock Coffee package designs. Vote for the look they like best, and you'll be entered into a sweepstakes to win a year's worth of groceries ($5,000)!

Return each day during the promotion period to vote again (earning another entry for a year's worth of groceries) - and for a chance to win other valuable prizes. (No purchase necessary to enter. Please see complete rules at www.CoffeeMakeover.com.) Eight O'Clock Coffee will announce the winning bag design on March 16, 2009 at www.CoffeeMakeover.com and at www.EightOClock.com.

An interesting approach – nice way for a brand to connect with its customers. And that can surely only add to its authenticity.

The history of the brand is pretty interesting too. It’s not all that common that a house brand successfully gets built into a stand-alone national brand. But that’s the case with Eight O'Clock, which gradually evolved beyond the A&P grocery store chain in the 1970s until finally being spun off into its own brand in 2003.

I have to confess though, based on the two choices I'll be kind of sad to see the brand's bold, classic scheme get dilluted this much. But they're both good designs, and either would probably do well for the product.

And beyond that, I'm glad to see it's still around.

For me, Eight O'Clock has a personal connection that goes back long before I could drink coffee. I have fond memories of my great grandmother going to the A&P in Antioch, Illinois and buying Bokar Coffee, which is now a sub brand of Eight O'Clock. I remember her pouring the bag into the grinder, hearing that pleasingly obnoxious sound of the machine, and then smelling that nice, fresh aroma when it was done. Ahhh. A beautiful memory.

Isn’t that the kind of thing great brands are made of?

Incidentally, my great grandmother lived to be 93 years old. Maybe it was the coffee? I’d better get a pound or two just in case.

Bernie Madoff screwed Sandy Koufax

Your Ad Here

Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax, a high school baseball teammate and friend of Mets owner Fred Wilpon, was among the clients who lost money investing with Bernard Madoff, according to a court filing released Wednesday night.

More than two dozen accounts involving the Mets, their owners and companies affiliated with their owners were listed, many with addresses at Shea Stadium. Koufax was the only immediately recognizable big-name player on the list.

Koufax attended Lafayette High School along with Wilpon in the 1950s and the two remain close. Koufax usually shows up each year at the Mets' spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Among the entities that had accounts with Madoff were Sterling Mets, the Mets Limited Partnership, the New York Mets Foundation and Sterling Doubleday -- the entity that owned the team when Wilpon and Nelson Doubleday were partners.

No amounts were listed in the filing, made in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan.

The Mets have not said how much the entities and individuals have lost. Jeff Wilpon said in December the money can be replenished over time as the operating businesses generate profits.

"The individual partners lost some money at Madoff. It doesn't affect the Mets. It doesn't affect the Citi Field project. It doesn't affect SNY or any of our other operating businesses," Jeff Wilpon said.

Pregnant tourist Sara Kuszak killed in Puerto Rico

Your Ad Here

Puerto Rico (AP) — A pregnant American tourist was killed Wednesday after she was abducted during a morning jog. Stuffed into the trunk of a car, she made a desperate call for help. About an hour later, she was found dead with her throat slashed.

Based on Sara Kuszak's description of her kidnapper's car, police arrested a local man whose clothing was covered with blood. He was not immediately charged.

"He saw the woman and kidnapped her," said Lt. Angel Ocasio. "He didn't take anything. He stole her life."

The man was located because the FBI picked up a signal from the victim's cell phone, which he was carrying, investigating officer Arsenio Rodriguez said. Kuszak's fiance had called the FBI, but the department turned the case over to local police.

The suspect told police that he was covered with blood because his brother owns horses and one of them had been cut, Rodriguez said.

Kuszak, who moved to Savannah, Georgia, from San Francisco about five years ago, arrived Tuesday night in Puerto Rico, where she met up with her fiance and several friends.

"She was looking forward to the rest of her life with her fiance and her unborn baby," her friend Matt Daniel said in a phone interview from Georgia. "I'm just devastated. I don't know who would do something like that."

Kuszak, who worked on sailboats and part-time in real-estate and catering, was five months pregnant, friends said.

She and her fiance, Cheshire McIntosh, met several years ago on a South Pacific island where she was vacationing and he was sailing a yacht, said another friend in Georgia, John Everette.

"That's how two young, attractive people met," he said. "She dropped her life in San Francisco ... to be with Cheshire and live this free life of sailing on the seas. She was a rolling stone."

Kuszak apparently was going to visit some friends whose yacht was at a marina in Fajardo, in eastern Puerto Rico, marina spokeswoman Frances Rios said. After she was kidnapped, Kuszak called a marina employee on her cell phone from the trunk of the car, Ocasio said. The employee then called 911.

It was unclear why Kuszak did not call 911 directly, but she may not have known that the same emergency number used on the mainland is also used on this U.S. Caribbean territory.

Police would not release a transcript of the employee's 911 call because the case is under investigation.

About an hour after receiving the call, police found Kuszak's partially clothed body in a field.

Actors, baseball legends on Madoff client list

Your Ad Here

NEW YORK (AP) — Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax. Actor Kevin Bacon. World Trade Center developer Larry Silverstein.

All three have at least one thing in common: Their names appear on a list of several thousand clients who lost money investing with Bernard Madoff that have been made public in a court filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan.

The list emerged late Wednesday, shortly after a whistleblower in the case, Harry Markopolos, told House lawmakers at a hearing that he had discovered that additional funds had relayed investments to Madoff in Europe — and that the managers of these "feeder" funds may have ignored signs of the massive fraud scheme.

He plans to present his findings to the Securities and Exchange Commission's inspector general Thursday. If proven, they would substantiate the assertions of many analysts that the alleged fraud was far too large for Madoff to have conducted alone.

House lawmakers on Wednesday also sparred with SEC officials, accusing them of impeding their probe into how the agency failed to uncover the alleged fraud.

Prosecutors say Madoff admits he lost more than $50 billion belonging to investors. Defense lawyers say he has cooperated with authorities to help identify assets.

The list of client names, including those of Madoff's relatives, numerous celebrities, dead people and charitable institutions, are listed on a 162-page document. Each page carries 84 single-spaced lines. Some customers are listed multiple times, presumably because they had multiple accounts.

The customers include prominent people and institutions that already had been publicly revealed, such as the Wilpon family, owner of the New York Mets.

Also listed were more than two dozen accounts involving the Mets and companies affiliated with their owners were listed, many with addresses at Shea Stadium.

The amount each person or institution invested with Madoff isn't listed.

One client is Ira Sorkin, the attorney who's defending Madoff against charges he perpetrated the biggest financial fraud in history. Others include Madoff's wife, sons, brother and other relatives.

The list was compiled by AlixPartners LLP, a Dallas company hired as claims agent by the trustee overseeing the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC.

Madoff hasn't been indicted. He's being held under house arrest at his multimillion-dollar penthouse.

Los Angeles – If Shelley Malil did the crime, he may have to do a lot of time.

The character actor, one of Steve Carell's heavily accented coworkers in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, has been ordered to stand trial for allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend in a jealous rage in August.

Malil, who pleaded not guilty to premeditated attempted murder and related charges last summer, is facing life in prison if convicted.

He is accused of stabbing Kendra Beebe 23 times at her San Marcos, Calif., home Aug. 10 after arriving to find her having dinner with another man in the backyard. Beebe's two young children were in the house at the time.

According to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, a next-door neighbor heard screaming and, poking his head over the fence, saw Malil attacking Beebe and ran over there to help.

A judge ruled Wednesday that there was enough evidence to send the case to trial.

"My parents treat me like I'm 14. They make me clean my room and stuff like that. They're always like "I don't care what MTV says you are."

See, there's the bands that you say you like to sound smart, and there's the bands you say you like to get laid. And then there's the bands you really listen to. -Rolling Stone Interview

"We're sick of hearing people say "that band is so gay" or "those guys are fags". Gay is not a synonym for shitty. If you want to say something's shitty, say it's shitty. Stop being such homophobic assholes!"

"I was isolating myself further and further, and the more I isolated myself, the more isolated I'd feel. I wasn't sleeping. I just wanted my head to shut off, like, I just wanted to completely stop thinking about anything at all." - Rolling Stone Magazine On Ativan O.D Incident

Underwear. It's like a god damned leash. It also constantly reminds me of how funny I look naked.

I guess we're just one of those bands that just polarizes people. Some people worship the ground we walk on, and some people say we're ruining music and should just shut out mouths. If you want to keep either of those opinions, you should try not to engage us in a real conversation. (On being voted worst band of 2005 by Spin magazine.)

I obsessively wanted to be in bands. I was probably fourteen when I got my first bass it was my friend's brother's, and we stole it. I was really into the idea that we could just play basement shows. The name of the first band was First Born, and it was terrible. We played this hair-metal place in Iowa they gave you 150 tickets to sell, and you give them the money. We gave the tickets away, said we lost the money, and this old Italian guy almost beat the f**k out of us. But to me it was awesome.

I can be unhappy and I can be happy, I am just one human being that thinks about my life and tries to figure myself out. When I write about feeling ****** it's not because I want to put on black nail varnish and when I write songs about being happy it's not because I sold a million records. It's because I am going through my life and figuring it out as I go along.

Trial set for actor accused in stabbing

Your Ad Here

NORTH COUNTY COURTS — A Los Angeles actor accused of stabbing his former girlfriend more than 20 times will stand trial, a judge ruled at a preliminary hearing yesterday.

Shelley Malil, 44, of Sherman Oaks is charged with premeditated attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and residential burglary in the attack Aug. 10 at Kendra Beebe's home in San Marcos.

Malil, best known for a supporting role as Haziz in the film “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” faces a maximum sentence of life in prison with a possibility of parole, if convicted. He remains in Vista jail on $3 million bail.

Dr. Thomas Velky testified yesterday that Beebe suffered 23 stab wounds. One just missed an artery in her throat and another caused her lung to collapse, Velky said.

Musician David Maldonado testified that he had arrived at Beebe's home about 8:30 p.m. About 15 minutes later, he said, Malil walked into Beebe's backyard and leaned in like he was hugging or kissing her.

“It was very immediate, and she started squirming and yelling for help,” Maldonado said.

Maldonado said he took a knife from Malil, cutting his own hand in the scuffle. He threw the knife over a fence, Maldonado said, and went inside to call 911. He didn't know the address, so he drove a few blocks to tell the operator the street names, Maldonado said.

A detective testified that the knife used in the attack had a label similar to those found in Malil's kitchen. Prosecutors allege that Malil obtained a second knife from Beebe's kitchen and continued the attack before neighbors Charlton Lee and Alexandra Baquero-Lee intervened on her front porch.

Baquero-Lee testified that she heard Beebe scream, “He's trying to kill me!” Baquero-Lee said her husband, Charlton Lee, asked Malil to drop the knife, and he did, and she went in the house to check on Beebe's two children.

Sandi Sharp, an investigator with the District Attorney's Office, testified that Beebe, who wasn't in court, said she had dated Malil off and on for about a year before the attack.

George Gershwin Bio

George Gershwin
(1898-1937)
<
"Popular songs and musical comedies as well jazz-flavored orchestral works and opera won international fame for the American composer George Gershwin (1898-1937). His parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants, and he grew up on the lower east side of Manhattan. As a boy, he taught himself to play hit tunes on a neighbor's piano; when he was thirteen, he began studying with a teacher who recognized his talent and introduced him to piano works ranging from Bach to Liszt to Debussy.

"At fifteen. he left school to become a pianist demonstrating new songs in the salesrooms of a music publisher; three years later, he started his won career as a songwriter, and in 1919 (at the age of twenty) he wrote La, La, Lucille, his first complete Broadway musical. The next year, his song Swanee was a tremendous hit; during the 1920s and 1930s he wrote one brilliant musical after another-including Lady, Be Good (1924), Funny Face (1927), and Of The I Sing (1931)--usually with his brother Ira as lyricist.

"Gershwin was not only a creator of the golden age of American musical theater but also a successful composer of music for the concert hall, beginning with the triumphant premiere of Rhapsody in Blue in 1924. He gave the first performance of his Concerto in F at Carnegie Hall in 1925 and traveled to Europe in the 1920s (meeting Berg in Vienna and Ravel and Stravinsky in Paris); part of his symphonic poem An American in Paris (1928) was composed on one of these visits. His most extended work is the opera Porgy and Bess (1935), which deals with the lives of poor black people in Charleston, South Carolina; it has been performed all over the world.

"Gershwin was outgoing, a sportsman, an art collector and amateur painter and irresistible to women; he was also wealthy, from royalties, concert fees, and his weekly radio show. During the last year of his life, he lived in Hollywood, were he wrote the music for several movies (and played tennis with Arnold Schoenberg in his spare time). He died of a brain tumor at the age of thirty-eight.

Rhapsody In Blue (1924)

"Rhapsody in Blue, Gershwin's most famous composition, is a one-movement work for piano and orchestra. The title reflects its free, rhapsodic form and blues flavor. But it is not true jazz, though it employs jazzlike rhythms and melodies and the orchestration suggests the distinctive sounds of jazz. There are three main sections and a coda; the extended piano solos in the main sections reflect Gershwin's own dazzling pianism and his genius as an improviser.

"Rhapsody in Blue opens with a now-famous clarinet solo that stars from a low trill, climbs the scale, and then slides up to a high 'wailing' tone. The blueslike opening theme, which grows out of the clarinet slide, is marked by the syncopations so typical of Gershwin's style."

Tri-County Symphonic Band highlights 20th century composers

MATTAPOISETT - Tuba player Stephen Dumaine joined the Tri-County Symphonic Band Sunday afternoon (Feb. 1) in the Gilbert D. Bristol Auditorium, Old Rochester Regional High School to celebrate the music of three prominent and prolific composers of the 20th century: Percy Aldridge Grainger (Australian; 1882-1961), George Gershwin (American; 1898-1937) and Edward Gregson (English; born 1945).

The concert, titled “Grainger, Gershwin and Gregson,” began with Gregson’s energetic opus Prelude for an Occasion. Selections from Gershwin’s all-American opera Porgy and Bess followed. The first half of the program concluded with Grainger’s iconic Lincolnshire Posy. This six-movement cornerstone of the modern symphonic band repertoire was described by the composer as a “musical wildflower.”

A setting of the Irish Tune from County Derry, also by Grainger, began the second half of the concert. Dumaine performed the Gregson Tuba Concerto.

Tri-County Symphonic Band Music Director Philip Sanborn conducts the band with guest tuba player Stephen Dumaine Sunday in the auditorium of Old Rochester Regional High School.

“This piece is cleverly crafted to demonstrate the virtuosity of the soloist and the various sonorities and textures of the band,” Tri-County Symphonic Band Music Director Philip Sanborn said.

Dumaine joined the tuba section of the Tri-County Symphonic Band to perform John Steven’s tuba quartet, Dances.

The concert concluded with an arrangement entitled Symphonic Gershwin, highlighting excerpts from An American in Paris, Rhapsody in Blue and Cuban Overture.

Dumaine is proof positive that persistence pays, Sanborn said.

“Each major orchestra employs just one tuba player full-time, making the openings few and far between,” Sanborn said. “Persevering against those who told him he couldn’t make a living as a tuba player, a year in which he had no professional musical employment (practicing on his own throughout that time) and 21 auditions, he has become the principal tuba of the National Symphony Orchestra.”

Dumaine grew up in Burrillville, R.I., and during his high school years he was a member of the Greater Boston Youth Symphony, winning a concerto competition to appear as soloist with them when he was 18. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School, and was principal tuba in Spain’s Orquesta Sinfonica de Galicia during the 1995-96 season. Dumaine then returned to the United States, where his orchestral experience includes positions with the New World Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony, and the Alabama Symphony, and substitute work with the New York City Ballet Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. National and international festival experience includes Tanglewood, Aspen, National Repertory Orchestra, SHIRA Festival in Israel, and Pacific Music Festival in Japan.

Concert Review of Theresa Andersson at The Mint

Your Ad Here

via : http://beatcrave.com/

I’m going to open up and share something with you – I’m a recovering addict. I used to attend concerts three to four times a week. When you give your body this much sensory over-load on a regular basis, you’re bound to become incoherently numb to pretty much anything music related that keeps you away from much needed sleep. Unless of course, it has the ability to make you feel something new and original that you’ve never felt before. With that in mind, when I received a text message that read “I was just at the most amazing show ever. Chills up and down my spine. You have to hear this.” I was left curious.

The text message was referring to Theresa Andersson. A soft-spoken, singer-song-writer from Los Angeles, California who tends to have more originality in her pinky than most people do in their entire body. Big words I know, but after familiarizing myself with her music on Myspace and loving every bit of it, I felt the only logical step next was to attend one of her residency shows at The Mint in Hollywood. The gloomy club is only two blocks from home for me, so it wouldn’t take much energy for a tired-concert-goer like myself to show up and see what she’s all about.

Well, what she’s all about blew my mind. She graces the tiny stage with herself, herself and herself; handling vocals, background vocals, guitar, bass, drums, violin and samples. Without the invention of the loop pedal, she wouldn’t have a gig. It’s common knowledge that people can create their own records pretty easily with pro-tools. All you have to do is record the guitar with one track, the bass on another, and so on and so forth. But Theresa Anderson goes one step further and does it all at the same time, in a live setting nonetheless. Prior to each song, she would spend approximately ten to twenty seconds setting up the next musical opus with drum and vocal loops, just to name a few. One thing I noticed was that the clapping from the audience would last up to thirty second, so half the time her set up was barely even noticeable. Quite a feet for someone just getting off the ground in the music industry.

Playing beautifully crafted songs such as “Na Na Na” and “Birds Fly Away” from her gorgeous album Hummingbird, it was easy to see why everyone is going crazy for this girl. She was recently invited to sing on David Byrne’s new record, will be performing on Late Night with Conan O’Brien next month, and has been featured on pretty much every top albums list of 2008 under the sun.

Needless to say, her show sent chills up and down my spine the entire night and left me craving more. After leaving the club, I couldn’t help but hum along to the music that was still circling around my head.

Have you given her a chance? Watch the video for “Na Na Na” and let us know what you think.

Saying she is sorry for the racism photo scandal she has caused, Miley Cyrus says some people take the picture out of context.

Miley Cyrus takes to her MileyWorld blog to address the controversy surrounding her latest pic that shows her and some friends pulling their eyelids back to imitate Asians' slanted eyes, saying she is sorry. "There are some people upset about some pictures taken of me with friends making goofy faces! Well, Im sorry if those people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context!" so she writes.

She, moreover, also writes down her opinion about the other picture of her taken earlier that showed her accidentally exposing her side breast while she was enjoying a shopping spree at a fashion store. "As for the shot of me taken outside of a dressing room, I wasnt aware that some creepy paparazzi was able to get a picture of me from where I was in the store. When did it become so out of control, that I cant come out of a dressing room to show my sister a shirt Im trying on?" she complains, adding, "It seems to me there needs to be better laws and more boundaries on these photographers!"

Regardless all the negative publication, Miley does have some other reasons to be feeling motivated as she is still in Nashville, enjoying her holiday with mother Leticia "Tish" Cyrus. "Its good to get away from it ALL every now and then! I couldnt of planned a better week to come back to Nashville!" she claims. Besides, she is also set to rehearse with fellow singer Taylor Swift for their scheduled duet at the 51st annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 8. "That is going to be so much fun! Ive had such a good time being home hanging out with my friend Lesley and just chillin' out!" the young celebrity gushes.

"We are constantly scrutinising the seized documents and trying to retrieve data from the hard disks and laptops recovered during the raids of residences and offices of Satyam officials including its former chairman B Ramalinga Raju," a senior CID official probing the Satyam fraud said on Thursday.

There are over 25 trunks loaded with seized documents and "we are putting all our efforts to scrutinise (them) with the help of financial experts," the CID official said.

To retrieve the data from the seized computers, the CID has been taking the services of experts of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and Forensic Science Laboratory, besides IT experts within the department, he said.

He said the probe agency has been ordered by the court to share the information it has unearthed from the seized material with other Central investigating agencies like SEBI, the SFIO and the Income-Tax department.

At least 700 civilians cross to safety in Sri Lanka

Colombo: At least 700 civilians fled Sri Lanka's northern war zone to a government-controlled area on Thursday, the military said, a day after the United Nations said 52 people had been killed by shelling.

Fighting continued as the army has closed in on the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) holding out in a 300-sq km slice of jungle in the northeast, aiming to end one of Asia's longest-running conflicts.

"About 700 civilians had come to a military-controlled area today morning and many more are coming," said military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara.

Some 70,000 people have been killed in the fighting since the conflict began in 1983.

The United Nations said on Wednesday at least 52 people were killed and 80 wounded by shelling in the war zone as the United States and Britain urged a ceasefire in Sri Lanka to evacuate casualties and allow relief into the war zone.

Aid agencies have expressed concern about 250,000 people trapped in Tiger-held areas, but the government says the number is about half that.

The government has urged civilians to enter a "safety zone" it had demarcated and said it will not be responsible for civilians who do not leave rebel-held areas.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Wednesday the only hospital, which is packed with patients, in the Tamil Tiger rebel-held area had been evacuated after being continuously shelled.

Pak finds Bangladeshi link to 26/11 terror

Islamabad: Pakistan has revealed a Bangladeshi connection to the Mumbai terror attacks, saying it has evidence of not only the involvement of a banned militant organisation, Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami, Bangladesh (HuJI-B), but also of its role in planning the attack and training the terrorists.

A reference in this regard is likely to be made in the report of the country's premier investigation agency, FIA, that will be shared soon with India as findings of preliminary investigations, local English newspaper Dawn reported on Thursday.

The report would most likely be indicating that the Mumbai attack was the handiwork of an 'international network of Muslim fundamentalists' present in South Asia and spread all the way to West Asia, and might build the case for regional anti-terror cooperation.

Although the contents of the report have been kept a tightly-guarded secret by the the Interior Ministry, sources privy to it said it would emphasise that the Mumbai incident was not strictly a Pakistan-India issue.

Pakistan's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Wajid Shamsul Hassan indicated in a recent interview that investigations had revealed the terrorist attack was not planned in Pakistan.

''Pakistani territory was not used so far as the investigators have made their conclusions,'' Hassan had said in the interview. ''It could have been some other place,'' he added.

The investigators were intensely probing if at least one of the Mumbai attackers was of Bangladesh origin, the sources said.

A senior western diplomat confirmed this and said there was a strong possibility that one of the attackers was a Bangladeshi national.

It has already been established that Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving gunman involved in the Mumbai attacks, was of Pakistani origin, but the identity of the other nine terrorists killed in the incident was yet to be finally determined, although India has been claiming that they were Pakistanis.

Although the Bangladesh connection has emerged quite prominently in the investigations, there were also clear indications that some of the planning for the attacks was done in Dubai and there was also an element of local Indian support.

Investigators believed it would have been almost impossible to plan and execute an attack of this proportion and sophistication without the local Indian support - a fact India has been shying away from.

The sources said that the two sets of questions given to India by Pakistan also touched this aspect. India has responded to only one set and that also indirectly through US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), while reply

to the second set of questions was awaited, they added.

In a related development, the FBI was reported to have sought access from the Indian authorities to two militants, Fahim Arshad Ansari and Sabbauddin, who were arrested by Uttar Pradesh police some time between February and March last year for having made reconnaissance of several sensitive places and were later questioned for the Mumbai attacks.

The investigators also suggest that the attack may be remotely linked to Al Qaeda's international terror network. It should be recalled that the HuJI-B, now being suspected of involvement in the attack, had been established in 1992 with

material assistance and inspiration from Osama bin Laden's International Islamic Front (IIF).
