Kindergarten Eligibility Date Changes for the 2009-10 School Year
The State of North Carolina has made changes to the eligibility dates for children entering kindergarten. Beginning with the 2009-10 school year, students attending kindergarten must be 5 years of age on or before August 31, 2009.
This is a change to the current Oct. 16 cut-off date. Gov. Mike Easley signed House Bill 150 last year, which modified G.S. 115C-364 to become effective with the 2009-10 school year.
Information about kindergarten registration is available on this Web site: http://www.wcpss.net/newcomer/getting-started/registration/kindergarten.html
Provisions are available for Kindergarten Early Entry for academically gifted students who are 4 years old by April 16 and demonstrate an extraordinary level of academic ability and maturity. Please be aware the guidelines for Kindergarten Early Entry are very stringent: http://www.wcpss.net/isd/elementary/lang_arts/kindergarten/ .
