Who – and Why – We Are

The primary mission of Americans for Limited Government can be summed up in three simple words and one succinct sentence: Roll back government. At the national level, at the state level, at the local level – wherever government usurpation has impaired or impinged upon individual freedom, the mission of ALG is unequivocal, and invariable: Roll back government.

Where oppressive taxes have robbed the individual of “life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness,” ALG’s mission is to Roll back government. Where over-reaching politicians have turned government into an onerous tool for seizing property, silencing dissent, or setting the wants of the state above the needs of the people, ALG intends to Roll back government. Where judicial activism has turned the courts from being the staid guardians of freedom to the radical engineers of social change, ALG is committed to Roll back government.

At ALG, we believe a little government goes a long ways. And even at that incipient level, it’s almost invariably in the wrong direction. And a large government at any level is a threat to freedom at every level. With all due intent. That’s why we have pledged to work with citizens and citizens groups nationwide to help “bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, and oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and success of liberty.”

Nearly 50 years ago, when those words were first uttered in an Inaugural Address, they seemed de rigueur. Today, they are almost revolutionary. And that makes the role of ALG – and the thousands of citizens nationwide whom it supports and who support it – so vitally important in our nation today.
