Its appears that even though it was being reported yesterday that the Chiefs denied the Lions permission to talk to Gunther Cunningham (they are saying initially denied now) he is off to Detroit Rock City.

The Detroit Lions have hired Gunther Cunningham to be their new defensive coordinator and coach Jim Schwartz is expected to make an announcement shortly. Cunningham was believed to be Schwartz’s No. 1 target.
Cunningham coached linebackers in Tennessee for three years while Schwartz was the defensive coordinator there. Schwartz’s search will now turn toward an offensive coordinator and special teams coach.
I think this is a good move for everybody. Gunther, although coaching some of the best Chiefs defenses in the mid to late 90’s, has been medioce at best in recent years. A fresh start should help everyone in this situation. Good luck Gunther (unless you are playing the Chiefs of course).
