Sony finally unveiled their mystery notebook product at CES 2009 this past week. Dubbed the VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC, it’s the lightest 8 inch notebook out on the market weighing in at a mere 1.4 pounds and measuring a mere 0.78 inches thick (full measurements are 9.65 x 0.78 x 4.72 inches).

The Lifestyle PC is definitely filled to the brim with features and specs including:
* CES 2009 Sat Day 3 342 Intel Atom processor running at 1.33 GHz
* 8 inch LED backlit display with a resolution of 1600 x 768 and XBRITE-ECO technology
* Up to a 60 GB hard drive as well as up to 128GB SSD
* Approximately 4 hours with standard battery or 8 hours with the large capacity battery
* A max of 2GB of RAM
* Built-in GPS
* Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n via Atheros chipset
* Bluetooth support including Stereo A2DP profile
* WWAN support
* Memory Stick PRO (Standard/Duo) media slot with MagicGate functionality
* MMC slot
* SD memory card slot
* Intel HD Audio Sound System
* Intel Graphics Media Accelerator
* Built-in MOTION EYE webcam and microphone

* Windows Vista Home Basic for the base model. Windows Vista Home Premium for the higher end configurations
* Available in garnet red, emerald green, onyx black, crystal white and classic black

The Lifestyle PC also has a one-button quick-boot option allowing you to boot into a small Linux kernel. This mode features Sony’s xross media bar interface and provides access to web (Firefox browser), email, photos etc. A Sony rep told me the boot time for the quick-boot option was timed at around 17 seconds. It’s a great way to access your system without jumping into Windows (especially since Windows Vista is running on this device). Here are shots of the interface
Curious about the keyboard design? Here are shots of the keyboard:

Here’s a welcome change – there is no touchpad on the Lifestyle PC. Sony chose to go with a trackpoint-like device. Smart decision – I’ve always been a fact of trackpoints.
The base model sells for $899.99 and features the Intel Atom 1.33GHz processor, 8 inch display, 2GB RAM, 60GB HDD, GPS, integrated mobile broadband, Bluetooth and Windows Vista Home Basic.

The next model up sells for $1199.99 and replaces the hard drive with a 64GB SSD and replaces Vista Home Basic with Vista Home Premium.

Finally, at $1499, the 64GB SSD gets upgraded to a 128GB SSD.

Not exactly netbook-like pricing is it? Oh wait.. it’s not a “netbook” … it’s a “Lifestyle PC”. Sense a bit of annoyance on my part? You bet.. but more on this later on. For now we’ll stick with the product announcement on the Sony netbook err.. VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC.

Medical products and drug maker Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) announced on Monday that it would acquire California-based contact lens solution makers, Advanced Medical Optics (NYSE: EYE) for $22 a share, or about $2.8 billion in cash.

The deal represents a premium of nearly 150% over Advanced Medical Optics' closing price of $.8.85 on Friday. Abbott will purchase all of AMO's 62 million shares for $1.36 billion and assume the company’s debt. Advanced Medical Optics had $57.1 million debt in September 2008.

Abbott noted that AMO is the world's largest firm in Lasik surgical devices, No. 2 in the cataract surgical-device market and No. 3 in contact-lens care products. Abbott Chief Executive Officer Miles D. White said in a statement “Abbott’s significant global presence will help drive growth opportunities for this business, especially in international markets, where favorable demographics are driving demand for advanced eye care procedures and products.”

"The business is poised for long-term growth, driven by advances in refractive surgery technologies, including LASIK, and an aging global population,” said John M. Capek, executive vice president, Medical Devices, Abbott "With AMO, Abbott will immediately become a global leader in vision."

Jim Mazzo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, AMO, who has been retained with Abbott as president, AMO stated "This transaction underscores the fundamental value of the AMO franchise, the talent and expertise of our global team, and the strength of our product offering, pipeline and strategy to provide refractive vision care for people of all ages.
Joining forces with Abbott will fortify our position as a global ophthalmic medical device leader and enhance our ability to serve eye care practitioners and patients around the world."

Additionally, Abbott Laboratories said in a statement that for full fiscal year 2009, it expects to earn in the range of $3.65 to $3.70 a share for 2009, matching the consensus estimates. The company said that the deal won’t affect the 2009 profit and will only boost earnings in 2010.

The companies expect the deal to close in the first quarter of 2009.

Advanced Medical Optics soared $12.88 or 145.4% to $21.72. Shares of Abbot Laboratories fell 57 cents or 1.11% to $50.60.A

Rev. Sharon Watkins Elected By Obama To Lead Prayer Service After Inauguration Day

Your Ad Here

President-Elect Barack Obama has elected Rev. Sharon E. Watkins to deliver prayer speech at the national prayer service that is done the day after inauguration day. Before Obama slips on his presidential suit, he is going to have Watkins say a prayer over his presidency.

According to the NY Times, "Ms. Watkins, the first woman ever selected to lead the service, is the president and general minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a small, liberal-leaning Protestant denomination with 3,754 congregations and about 690,000 members in the United States and Canada. Ms. Watkins was elected to the post in 2005, the first woman ever chosen to lead a mainline Protestant denomination."

What makes Watkins so special to the media as of now is how unknown she is. Obama reportedly met her during the campaign's last summer while on the way to become president. Apparently he met her a special meeting where ministers got together for a closed-door interview and Watkins is the one who said the closing prayer that day.

The prayer service is to take place on Jan. 21, at the Washington National Cathedral. (c) tPC

Search continues in Tas for white pointer shark

Your Ad Here

There has been no sign so far of a large shark that attacked a teenage girl surfing in Tasmania's north-east yesterday.

A police boat and plane are continuing to search around Binalong Bay.

It has been a hot day but no-one is swimming at the beaches in and around the scene of the attack.

Police and Parks and Wildlife have closed all beaches as far north as the Gardens after 13-year-old Hannah Mighall was attacked by a five-metre white pointer shark at Bailey's Rocks yesterday afternoon.

The shark was spotted along the coast for several hours after the attack but so far has not been seen today.

A sea and air search is also checking beaches further south, including Beer Barrel Beach.

The police say they will not close other swimming spots unless the shark is seen nearby.

Police say it is unlikely any of the closed beaches will reopen until at least Wednesday.

East coast communities hope yesterday's shark attack will not deter people from swimming and surfing in the area this summer.

Greg Chippendale from the Scamander Surf Life Saving Club says the attack has shocked the community, but some surfers have already returned to beaches south of Binalong Bay.

"I've just got out of the surf at Scamander this morning me and a mate of mine up the road we were just out there this morning I think you can't sort of dwell on it," he said.

"What happened yesterday was just a freak thing that the odds of that happening to you are pretty slim."

CSIRO shark biologist Dr John Stevens says the attack was probably more exploratory then predatory.

"The wounds are not that particularly severe, whereas if a white shark was really having a go at you, it would certainly take your leg off quite easily," he said.

The girl's father says she has had surgery to repair muscle and nerve damage, but she is expected to make a full recovery.

'Misunderestimate' tops Bushisms list

Your Ad Here

source
New York, Jan 11: George W Bush will step down as US President in a few days but his unique linguistic constructions, Bushisms as they are popularly dubbed, will go down in history as something which the world liked and laughed at.

"Misunderestimate", "Mission Accomplished", "Brownie, you've done a heck of a job!" "I'm the decider", and "I use the Google" top the all-time Bushisms' list released by the Global Language Monitor (GLM).

The era of Bushisms is now coming to an end, and word watchers worldwide will have a hard time substituting Barack Obama's precise intonations and eloquence for W's unique linguistic constructions, said Paul J J Payack, president and chief word analyst of the GLM.

The biggest linguistic faux pas of the Obama era thus far involves the use of the reflexive pronoun "myself". This is a refreshing shift from the Bush years, Payack said.

The rankings were nominated by language observers the world over and then ranked with the help of the GLM's PQI (predictive-quantities indicator). The PQI is a proprietary algorithm that tracks words and phrases in the print and electronic media, on the Internet and throughout the blogosphere.

According to GLM, "Misunderestimate" is one of the first and the most iconic Bushisms, uttered by Bush in the immediate aftermath of the disputed 2000 election.

Though "Mission Accomplished" was never actually stated by Bush but nevertheless the banner behind him was all that was needed to cement this phrase into the public imagination.

"Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job", was what Bush said to FEMA director Michael Brown after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"I'm the decider" came to symbolise the "imperial" aspects of the Bush presidency. It was said in response to his decision to keep Don Rumsfeld on as the Secretary of Defence. "I use the Google" was said in reference to the popular search engine in 2006.

Other notable Bushisms are -- "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully" (came to symbolise Bush's environmental policy), "You work three jobs? Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that" (said to a divorced mother of three in 2005).

"Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?" (uttered before the first primaries back in 2000), "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we.

They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we" and "It was not always certain that the US and America would have a close relationship" (while speaking of the Anglo-American relationship in 2006).

In 2005, scribbled on a note to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during a UN Security Council meeting which said: "I think I may need a bathroom break. Is this possible?"

Reflective Bush Warns Obama of Attacks Against Nation, Criticism Facing President

Your Ad Here

WASHINGTON -- The weight of the presidency will hit Barack Obama as soon as he enters the Oval Office, President Bush said Monday, warning the president-elect about attacks against America as well as attacks against him personally.

Speaking at his last press conference before leaving office, a reflective Bush urged Obama not to fall prey to critics and gave some rare insights into the job of the presidency and expectations for the next president.

He said that the criticism Obama will face is diminished in light of the "profound" nature of the job.

"He's going to have to do what he thinks is right. And if you don't, I don't see how you can live with yourself. I don't see how I can get back home in Texas and look in the mirror and be proud of what I see if I allowed the loud voices, the loud critics, to -- to prevent me from doing what I thought was necessary to protect this country," he said.

"On the other hand, the job is so exciting and the position so profound that the disappointments will be clearly a minority irritant," the president added.

As for threats to the nation, Bush said Obama faces serious enemies who "would like to inflict damage" on Americans and is confronted by an economy that began experiencing problems even before Bush's presidency.

"The most urgent threat that he'll have to deal with and other presidents after him will have to deal with is an attack on our homeland. You know, I wish I could report that's not the case ... and that'll be the major threat," he said.

"North Korea's still a problem. There is a debate in the intel community about how big a problem they are," Bush said, noting that he is also not certain democracy will endure in Iraq.

But Bush said he doesn't plan on sticking around and looking over Obama's shoulder to comment on how he's doing.

"When I get out of here, I am getting off the stage. I believe that there ought to be one person in the klieg lights at a time, and I've had my time in the klieg lights," he said. "I wish him all the best."

Bush said he Obama has not asked him to make a request for the second half of a $700 billion bailout package designed to shore up the financial markets. Obama is expected to make the request as early as Monday for the $350 billion needed to inject life into the foundering economy.

Bush said his administration took "extraordinary measures to deal with the frozen credit markets," and the thaw is the first step toward recovery.

"There's plenty of critics in this business. I understand that. And I thank you for giving me a chance to defend a record that I am going to continue to defend because I think it's a good, strong record," he said.

Discussing things he could have done differently or whether taking the "popular" route would have been the best course for the United States, the president said he has thought long and hard about whether he could have handled the response to Hurricane Katrina differently, but he took issue with widespread criticism about the federal response.

"Don't tell me the federal response was slow when there was 30,00 people pulled off stomrs right after the storm passed ... it's a pretty quick response," he said, adding that some things could have been done differently.

Bush also said he shouldn't have allowed a "Mission Accomplished" sign to go up on the aircraft carrier in May 2003 after major "combat operations" ended in Iraq. He said he was disappointed by the situation in Abu Ghraib and wishes that the war had borne out the intelligence claim that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

"I don't know if you want to call those mistakes or not, but they were -- things didn't go according to plan, let's put it that way," he said.

He added that if he had wanted to be popular in some corners of the world he could have chosen to sign on to the Kyoto global warming treaty or joined the International Criminal Court or condemned Israel for the condition of Palestinians in the Middle East. But he said that would have been antithetical to the aspirations and goals of the United States.

"I strongly disagree with the assessment that our moral standing has been damaged.
It may be damaged amongst some of the elite. But people still understand America stands for freedom; that America is a country that provides such great hope," he said.

Bush said that had he listened to critics who wanted to shut down the detention center on Guantanamo Bay, he would have risked the nation's safety.

"In terms of the decisions that I had made to protect the homeland, I wouldn't worry about popularity. What I would worry about is the Constitution of the United States and putting plans in place that makes it easier to find out what the enemy is thinking," he said. Because all these debates will matter naught if there's another attack on the homeland. The question won't be, you know, 'Were you critical of this plan or not?' The question's going to be, 'Why didn't you do something?'"

The president said that if he had listened to all the criticism he faced, he wouldn't have been able to do the job. He said he had worked well his opponents on several issues, including education reform, but in terms of criticism "the rhetoric got out of control." He advised Obama not to fall prone to excessive harshness.

"It's just pathetic isn't it? Self-pity. And I don't believe President Obama will be full of self-pity," he said, adding that he hopes the critics go easier on Obama. "We should all accept criticism, there will always be critics ... it is the great thing about democracy ... I just hope the tone is respectful."

Bush said he would like to see an end to the violence in Gaza between Israelis and Hamas by time he leaves office next week, but wants a "sustainable cease-fire" that starts with Hamas stopping its lobbing of rockets in Israel.

"I believe the choice is Hamas' to make," Bush said, adding that Egypt has to stop allowing the smuggling of weapons through tunnels at the border with Gaza. "There will not be a sustainable cease-fire if they continue firing rockets.

Asked if the latest violence will end by time he departs next Tuesday, Bush said, "I hope so."

The president repeated his argument that "Israel has a right to defend herself," but noted that the two-state solution for the Mideast, of which he was the first U.S. president to articulate, is the only way to go.

"Most Palestinians want their own state and most Israelis understand there needs to be a democracy on their boarder in order for there to be long-lasting peace," he said. The challenge, of course, has been to lay out the conditions so that a peaceful state can emerge.

In his last official question-and-answer session with the press, Bush thanked the White House press corps for their effort, even though he said they sometimes didn't give him the credit he deserved.

"Sometimes I didn't like the stories that you wrote or reported on. Sometimes you 'misunderestimated' me.But always the relationship, I have felt, has been professional, and I appreciate it," he said, deliberately botching the word that he had mistakenly used early on in his presidency.

Bush leaves office at midday Jan. 20, when Obama takes the oath and moves into the Executive Mansion.

Missing pilot found alive after crash

MILTON, Fla. (WALA/WISH) - A missing pilot from Anderson, Indiana has been found alive in Alabama after his plane crashed in Florida Sunday night.

According to the FBI, pilot Marc Schrenker was found alive near Harpersville, Alabama after parachuting from his plane overnight.

Schrenker's 6 seater plane went down late Sunday night in a marshy area of East Milton. Schrenker had radioed in a distress call before losing communication with air traffic controllers. Military jets were called in to help. The pilots saw the plane as it went down.

The plane was a single engine, 6 seater Piper PA46. The crash was reported at 9:15 p.m.

The wreckage of the plane was found about 100 yards behind a residence on Lakeside Drive in East Milton. The plane crashed into a wooded, swampy area.

A search for Schrenker began immediately. Helicopters, other aircraft, boats, and dogs were all used in the Florida search, but results came up empty.

The plane was en route from Anderson, Indiana to Destin, Florida.

Schrenker radioed for help near Birmingham, Alabama. His distress call said his windshield had imploded and he had severe bleeding.

Air Traffic Controllers in Atlanta tried to radio the pilot to land at the Pell City Airport, but they could not get him to respond.

Military Jets from Whiting Field were launched to intercept the plane. The Jets caught up to the plane, but the pilots say the door to the plane was open and the cockpit was dark. They could not see Schrenker, nor could they reach him by radio. The Military stayed with the plane until it crashed one mile north of Peter Prince Airport in Milton.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected in Milton Monday to investigate.

Villu Movoe Review

Review : After Pokkiri, Prabhu Deva and Vijay are back with 'Villu' a 'Power pack Pongal' for Vijay Fans. Vijay Fans in USA are thrilled to taste the feast two days prior to release in India. After two not so good movies such as ATM and Kuruvi, Vijay is back in form. As a rigid formula everyone in the theatre expect only a Mass entertainer from 'Pugazh'-Vijay, and Prabhu Deva has done his best to maintain all the elements needed to give a complete Vijay movie - with super hero intro, romance ,comedy, several fights, item songs and finally hero wins over the baddies.

Story: Hero Pugazh (Vijay) is introduced as a local area super hero who is the savior of poor and the needy. He acts as a Villu (arrow) of a senior Police officer Manoj K Jain and follows his instructions secretly. In his mission he targets international Dadas and as a part of the mission he makes love to Jhanvi (Nayantara), who as expected is the Main Dada Prakash Raj's daughter. Who is Pughazh and why is he back of these dadas is revealed slowly following a flash back in the second half. Director has succeeded in keeping the suspense till the end. Though there are logical flaws here and there, story falls in place.

First half rocks the theater and major credit goes to Vaigai puyal Vadivelu. He tickles us every time he appears on the screen and especially his Nakka Mukka dance in front of Swiss Police is highly comical. Only Kids can enjoy his fight with the graphic cow. Nayanthara chills the screen now and then, its high time she start doing something than a regular heroine shouting at the hero and showing recession in costumes. She is the same in all her recent movies. Mam try to act for a change!

Devi Sri Prasad rocks the floor in 'Jalsa' and 'Nee Kova Pattal' is nice to hear and to see. He could have worked more on BGM as they don't sync with the movie, rather sounds too bold at unwanted places. 'Vaada Maapla' and item song 'Daddy Mummy' is gonna be sizzling in channels for the following days for sure. 'Dheem Thanana Thillana' is a good dance number and 'Rama Rama' is a typical Vijay intro song meant to bring out josh in his fans, Prabhu Deva shows his mark in all songs and Vijay has proved that he is no less a dancer than the director. Kudos to the Choreographers! Kushboo and Prabhu Deva's special appearance in the song adds spice. Villian Prakash Raj fails to impress and has been wasted.

Ravi Varman's Camera has beautifully captured Zurich in songs and fight sequences are amazing. Prabhu Deva has brilliantly capitalized the talents of Ravi. Only one or two dialogues like 'Enakku pottukudukka theriyadhu, Poda thaan theriyum' pin the mind while others fly no where.

Analysis: Villu has an entertaining first half, flash back in the second half is totally hindi 'Soldier' with added Tamil senti facts. Major Vijay, logic less Blue Ray Disc sequences, Drunk Nayanthara and no different villain Prakash Raj make the movie lag. Vijay imitates Superstar in some scenes which look very obvious and repetitive. Hero Vijay, song sequences, Cinematography and Vadivelu make 'Villu' a pretty good entertainer

Denver Broncos Hire Josh McDaniels

Your Ad Here

The Denver Broncos reportedly have their next head coach, and it's New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the Broncos have decided on McDaniels and will make the announcement official on Monday.

For Denver, the move makes sense: McDaniels is known for his ability to work with young quarterbacks, and the Broncos have one in Jay Cutler. Both Tom Brady and Matt Cassel have spoken highly of McDaniels, and Cutler will no doubt benefit from working with him as well.

The only question about McDaniels is whether his youth and inexperience is an issue. His only NFL experience is with the Patriots, where he's been an assistant to Bill Belichick since 2001, and he had just one year of experience as a coach at any level (1999 at Michigan State) before Belichick hired him. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen clearly thinks that in the 32-year-old McDaniels, he's got the latest coaching boy wonder.

While announcing this, the authority has made it clear that no middlemen will be allowed in the allotment process. "We have appointed HDFC bank for selling and submission of the application forms. People should not fall pray to any middleman who promises them to get a flat," said HK Jawale, Chief Officer of Mumbai Board.

When asked about such malpractices being common in the organisation, chief vigilance officer Jawahar Singh said, "We arrested our employee, Narendra Sharma, for false promises to people and handed him over to the Mumbai crime Branch last year. Last month, another trap was laid in Mhada canteen and two people, who claimed to be Mhada agents, were arrested. It is our appeal to the public to approach the vigilance department in such cases."

However, he said only 10 FIRs were registered last year.The process of sale of application will begin from January 12 and will go on till the month end. Forms will be available at 21 outlets of HDFC Bank. The highest rate has been quoted for the high- income group colony at Versova (926.24 sq. feet, 59 tenements, Rs56,46,000). The lowest rate quoted is for the economically weaker section tenements in Canara Engineering at Ghatkopar (295 tenements, 180.94 sq feet, Rs3,35,000.)
