Sources tell SI Alex Rodriguez tested positive for steroids in 2003

In 2003, when he won the American League home run title and the AL Most Valuable Player award as a shortstop for the Texas Rangers, Alex Rodriguez tested positive for two anabolic steroids, four sources have independently told Sports Illustrated.

Rodriguez's name appears on a list of 104 players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball's '03 survey testing, SI's sources say. As part of a joint agreement with the MLB Players Association, the testing was conducted to determine if it was necessary to impose mandatory random drug testing across the major leagues in 2004.

When approached by an SI reporter on Thursday at a gym in Miami, Rodriguez declined to discuss his 2003 test results. "You'll have to talk to the union," said Rodriguez, the Yankees' third baseman since his trade to New York in February 2004. When asked if there was an explanation for his positive test, he said, "I'm not saying anything."

Phone messages left by SI for players' union executive director Donald Fehr were not returned.

Though MLB's drug policy has expressly prohibited the use of steroids without a valid prescription since 1991, there were no penalties for a positive test in 2003. The results of that year's survey testing of 1,198 players were meant to be anonymous under the agreement between the commissioner's office and the players association. Rodriguez's testing information was found, however, after federal agents, armed with search warrants, seized the '03 test results from Comprehensive Drug Testing, Inc., of Long Beach, Calif., one of two labs used by MLB in connection with that year's survey testing. The seizure took place in April 2004 as part of the government's investigation into 10 major league players linked to the BALCO scandal -- though Rodriguez himself has never been connected to BALCO.

The list of the 104 players whose urine samples tested positive is under seal in California. However, two sources familiar with the evidence that the government has gathered in its investigation of steroid use in baseball and two other sources with knowledge of the testing results have told Sports Illustrated that Rodriguez is one of the 104 players identified as having tested positive, in his case for testosterone and an anabolic steroid known by the brand name Primobolan. All four sources spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the evidence.

Primobolan, which is also known by the chemical name methenolone, is an injected or orally administered drug that is more expensive than most steroids. (A 12-week cycle can cost $500.) It improves strength and maintains lean muscle with minimal bulk development, according to steroid experts, and has relatively few side effects. Kirk Radomski, the former New York Mets clubhouse employee who in 2007 pleaded guilty to illegal distribution of steroids to numerous major league players, described in his recent book, Bases Loaded: The Inside Story of the Steroid Era in Baseball by the Central Figure in the Mitchell Report, how players increasingly turned to drugs such as Primobolan in 2003, in part to avoid detection in testing. Primobolan is detectable for a shorter period of time than the steroid previously favored by players, Deca-Durabolin. According to a search of FDA records, Primobolan is not an approved prescription drug in the United States, nor was it in 2003. (Testosterone can be taken legally with an appropriate medical prescription.)

Rodriguez finished the 2003 season by winning his third straight league home run title (with 47) and the first of his three MVP awards.

Because more than 5% of big leaguers had tested positive in 2003, baseball instituted a mandatory random-testing program, with penalties, in '04. According to the 2007 Mitchell Report on steroid use in baseball, in September 2004, Gene Orza, the chief operating officer of the players' union, violated an agreement with MLB by tipping off a player (not named in the report) about an upcoming, supposedly unannounced drug test. Three major league players who spoke to SI said that Rodriguez was also tipped by Orza in early September 2004 that he would be tested later that month. Rodriguez declined to respond on Thursday when asked about the warning Orza provided him.

When Orza was asked on Friday in the union's New York City office about the tipping allegations, he told a reporter, "I'm not interested in discussing this information with you."

Anticipating that the 33-year-old Rodriguez, who has 553 career home runs, could become the game's alltime home run king, the Yankees signed him in November 2007 to a 10-year, incentive-laden deal that could be worth as much as $305 million. Rodriguez is reportedly guaranteed $275 million and could receive a $6 million bonus each time he ties one of the four players at the top of the list: Willie Mays (660), Babe Ruth (714), Hank Aaron (755) and Barry Bonds (762), and an additional $6 million for passing Bonds. In order to receive the incentive money, the contract reportedly requires Rodriguez to make extra promotional appearances and sign memorabilia for the Yankees as part of a marketing plan surrounding his pursuit of Bonds's record. Two sources familiar with Rodriguez's contract told SI that there is no language about steroids in the contract that would put Rodriguez at risk of losing money.

Arguments before an 11-judge panel in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Pasadena are ongoing between government prosecutors and the players' association over the government's seizure of the test results from the Long Beach lab. The agents who collected the material had a search warrant only for the results for the 10 BALCO-linked players. Attorneys from the union argue that the government is entitled only to the results for those players, not the entire list. If the court sides with the union, federal authorities may be barred from using the positive survey test results of non-BALCO players such as Rodriguez in their ongoing investigations.

Coldplay tour charts more 'Viva La Vida' concerts in U.S.

Chris Martin will lead Grammy nominated band Coldplay across the U.S. later this year for a reprise of the widely popular Viva La Vida Tour of summer 2008. The new 14-city run picks up July 10 at The Amphitheater at Clark County in Portland, OR, wrapping on August 9 at Ford Amphitheatre in Tampa, FL.

The outing is primarily booked for amphitheaters on the nation's East and West coasts. The jaunt includes a July 13 performance at Shoreline Amphitheater in San Francisco, CA, a July 22 set at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in Houston, TX. And an August 3 concert at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA. A single show is slated for Canada on July 29 in Toronto, ON, but the venue has not been announced.

Public onsales for the new leg of dates begin February 13 and 14, followed by a few additional sales on February 21. Primary ticketing for the tour will be handled by Live Nation, which has been in the news this week because of a speculated merger with Ticketmaster Entertainment.

Coldplay is touring behind its fourth studio album "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," which was released in June 2008. The album hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, was certified double Platinum in late October, and has earned several Grammy nominations for the band.

Despite its critical and commercial success, the album and its hit single "Viva La Vida" came under fire when musician Joe Satriani accused the band of copying "substantial original portions" from his instrumental song "If I Could Fly." Coldplay denied the accusation, noting that similarities in melody were surprising but unintentional.

"If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him," the band said in a statement on their Web site. "Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write or have any influence on the song 'Viva La Vida.' We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavours."

Coldplay will perform at the 51st annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 8. According to published reports, the band is working on a fifth studio album and aiming for a late 2009 release.

Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone are on screen gems in their aptly named characters Adam and Eve. Everything about "Blast From The Past" was superb from the casting of Christopher Walken, Sissy Spacek and Dave Foley to the outstanding performances by everyone made this film so enjoyable.

I could not find one thing wrong with this film because it was that good. Everything in this film was a breath of fresh air and I'm glad I saw this film. Through this movie, it has given me respect for Walken, who has become one of my favorite actors in Hollywood.

The performances by the cast were real and honest. Also, everyone seemed to enjoy each other's company as well as performing in this movie and it showed; furthermore, it also showed up in the box office and rental receipts as people couldn't get enough of this great comedy.

"Blast From The Past" is a worthwhile comedy that deserves everyone's attention. Two thumbs WAY up.

But it hasn't been enough.

"$1,300 a month sounds like a good chunk of money, but once you start deducting the $10 here, the $20 there, it doesn't go very far," said Rainwater, who now lives in Tennessee with a relative.

Rainwater, who was laid off from an educational publishing company early last year, is among the rapidly growing number of Americans who've relied on unemployment pay to help make ends meet. Today, the government reported that employers shed 598,000 jobs in January -- the largest monthly job loss since 1974 -- while the national unemployment rate jumped to 7.6 percent, its highest level since 1992. Unemployment Nation: 598,000 Jobs Lost in January

Last week, the number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment claims jumped to 626,000, a 26-year high, bringing the total number of Americans receiving unemployment insurance to nearly 4.8 million.

Legislators are working through the government's proposed stimulus package to expand unemployment benefits, including an additional $25 a week in unemployment pay, 20- to 33-week extensions in unemployment compensation, suspending some taxes for unemployed workers and health care subsidies for those receiving COBRA, insurance provided by former employers.

States overwhelmed by demands for unemployment insurance are set to receive $7 billion in additional funding to cover more unemployment claims and $500 million for administrative costs. Seven states have already depleted their unemployment insurance funds and 11 more may follow, according to a report today in the Wall Street Journal. Virginia Girl Latest to Be Lured by Xbox Predator

Rhode Island Man Charged With 'Carnal Knowledge' in Girl's Disappearance

A 13-year-old Virginia girl is back home after being lured away by a man she'd been chatting with for at least six months through a Microsoft Xbox 360 game, police said.

Andrew Holloway, 21, who allegedly traveled to Evington, Va. from his home in Rhode Island, has been charged with a sex crime in connection with the case, according to police.

The teen was the third child in recent weeks to have left home to meet adults they came in contact with through an Xbox game. The others were a 16-year-old girl from Detroit and a 12-year-old boy from Ohio.

The 13-year-old Virginia girl first met Holloway through the game system's chat capabilities and then continued the relationship on the Internet after her Xbox broke, police said.

Bedford County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ricky Gardner said the girl was reported missing Tuesday evening by her father. An hour prior to his call, Gardner said, his office had received a tip from a neighbor about two suspicious people walking along the road near her home, later determined to be the teen and Holloway.

Police in Virginia have charged 21-year-old Andrew Holloway, right, with sex crimes, saying he lured a 13-year-old girl from her home using her Microsoft Xbox and the Internet. The case is one of three in the news in the several weeks.

"Every time a car would come, they'd jump over to the wood line" to hide, Gardner told ABCNews.com today.

Police responded and found no trace of the pair, but when the girl's father reported his daughter missing a short time later a team of police, firefighters and K-9 units responded to the area as well as a state police helicopter with thermal imaging equipment.

While police, family and friends were searching for the blond teenager, she and Holloway were apparently figuring out their next move. Ultimately, Gardner said, they ended up knocking on the door of a house about a mile away from her home the next day, asking to use the telephone.

Wall Street Exposed as Convicted Escort Boss Reveals Client List of 9,800

Wall street lawyers, investment bankers, CEOs and media executives often used corporate credit cards to pay for $2,000 an hour prostitutes, according to the madam who ran one of New York's biggest and most expensive escort services until it was busted last year.

But prosecutors in the Manhattan District Attorney's office chose not to pursue any of the corporate titans, says Kristin Davis, who pleaded guilty last year to charges of running a prostitution business that used more than a hundred women.

"They showed no interest," said Davis in an interview for broadcast Friday on the ABC News program 20/20.

"Some of these guys, I was invoicing on corporate credit cards," she said. "I was writing up monthly bills for computer consulting, construction expenses, all of these things, I was invoicing them monthly so they could get it by their accountants," Davis said.

A spokesperson said district attorney Robert Morgenthau had "no comment" on the handling of Davis' case or her allegations.

Davis provided ABC News with a print-out of her computerized client list, the same one she says that was offered to the district attorney.

The document shows Davis kept meticulous notes about her clients, their credit card numbers and mobile phone numbers.

Fla. Doctor Investigated in Badly Botched Abortion

Fla. authorities consider taking doc's license for botched abortion; woman says baby born live

Eighteen and pregnant, Sycloria Williams went to an abortion clinic outside Miami and paid $1,200 for Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique to terminate her 23-week pregnancy.

Three days later, she sat in a reclining chair, medicated to dilate her cervix and otherwise get her ready for the procedure.

Only Renelique didn't arrive in time. According to Williams and the Florida Department of Health, she went into labor and delivered a live baby girl.

What Williams and the Health Department say happened next has shocked people on both sides of the abortion debate: One of the clinic's owners, who has no medical license, cut the infant's umbilical cord. Williams says the woman placed the baby in a plastic biohazard bag and threw it out.

Police recovered the decomposing remains in a cardboard box a week later after getting anonymous tips.

Fla. authorities consider taking doc's license for botched abortion after woman says the baby was born live.

"I don't care what your politics are, what your morals are, this should not be happening in our community," said Tom Pennekamp, a Miami attorney representing Williams in her lawsuit against Renelique (ren-uh-LEEK') and the clinic owners.

The state Board of Medicine is to hear Renelique's case in Tampa on Friday and determine whether to strip his license. The state attorney's homicide division is investigating, though no charges have been filed. Terry Chavez, a spokeswoman with the Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office, said this week that prosecutors were nearing a decision.

Michael Phelps says 3-month suspension is fair, eager to put pot photo fallout behind him

Michael Phelps says it's fair for USA Swimming to suspend him for three months, the latest fallout from a photo showing the Olympic great inhaling from a marijuana pipe. Phelps was back training at his regular pool Friday, a day after his suspension.

"It's not my decision. It's theirs," Phelps said of USA Swimming's decision. "I have nothing to say, but if that's they want to do, that's their choice. It's something that USA Swimming came up with. It's fair. Obviously, for a mistake you should get punished."

Phelps won a record eight gold medals in Beijing and returned to America as one of the world's most acclaimed athletes. He made headlines of a different kind, however, in the wake of the photo, published Sunday by News of the World, a British tabloid.

Yacht Murderer Wanted Sexual Reassignment Surgery

Skylar Deleon had wanted a sex change for a long time, and finally decided to take matters into his own hands.

In his first network television interview since being convicted for murdering a couple aboard their yacht, Skylar Deleon told ABC News that he wanted to be a woman so badly, he tried to cut off his genitalia in prison.

"I basically took a sheet and tied it around my lower extremity … I tied it around and I went to cut it off," he told ABC News.

Deleon's dreams of big money and a more luxurious lifestyle came to an end after he murdered Tom and Jackie Hawks aboard the couple's yacht in 2004. In October 2008, the jury voted for the death penalty for Deleon, 29, a former child actor .

But some believe the motive behind the murders didn't have to do with a desire for material wealth, or Deleon's abusive childhood. Instead, the cold-blooded killings may have been driven by Deleon's gender identity.

"This caper, this entire murder, this desire to get some wealth, to get some money, was to pay for that sex change," said Michael Molfetta, a defense attorney who represented Deleon's wife, Jennifer.

Wilson, a young, white, Southern man, attacked Lewis, a freedom rider for Martin Luther King, in the "white" waiting room of a South Carolina bus station.

The men had not seen each other again until Tuesday when, with "Good Morning America's" help, Wilson approached Lewis again -- this time offering an apology and a chance to relieve a burden he'd carried for more than four decades.

"I'm so sorry about what happened back then," Wilson said breathlessly.

"It's OK. I forgive you," Lewis responded before a long-awaited hug.

For Lewis, who in the intervening years became a U.S. representative from Georgia, the apology was an unexpected symbol of the change in time and hearts.

Four reasons why public Facebook status updates won't kill Twitter

Here’s a short post on why I think Facebook allowing you to make your status updates public won’t affect Twitter as much as some might think. (In order to get Facebook statuses, you no longer need to use a session ID to access statuses).

1. Twitter totally changed the model in social networks. Previously the model had been “friend” someone. Facebook requires consent for “following”. Twitter totally switched it to “Follow”. The model was now - at least if your updates were public - opt in, not opt out. That meant that public Twitter accounts could spread much faster than Facebook ones, since Facebook accounts are set to default to closed.

2. Twitter is “mainstreaming” the Follow model faster than Facebook. Facebook’s users are not used to this at all. They may well find Twitter easier to understand than changing the way they use Facebook already. What you do on Facebook is often quite different. Twitter is much more about communication/conversation.

3. Facebook’s business model is predicated on them owning your social graph. You might think you own it, but they do, in effect. Twitter has flourished by giving life to an eco-system of other services which can tell you lots of interesting things about your social graph, via their API. (One of the coolest ones lately is Twittersheep).

4. @replies on Twitter are almost always public. That’s powerful. @replies on Facebook won’t be because so much of your social graph will probably stay closed (that’s my view at least).

Pakistan's Nuclear Scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan to be Released

Islamabad (24/7 News Network): The Islamabad High Court has ordered the release of Pakistan's Nuclear scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan as per the agreement reached between him and the Pakistani government. The agreement won't be made public, as the court banned the publication of the secret agreement.

Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan was put under house arrest in 2004 after he made a confession on the television that he sold nuclear secrets to Iran, Libya and North Korea. It is not immediately known whether Dr. Khan will be allowed to travel abroad or not.

Meanwhile, the United States has expressed concerns over Dr. Qadeer Khan's release. The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other senior US officials believe that Dr. Khan is still a significant "proliferation risk" and it would be "unfortunate" if he would be released from house arrest.

Some Republican Senators Will Vote for Stimulus Bill

Two Republican Senators say they will support the economic stimulus plan as it currently is; Democratic leaders agreed to cut some planned spending. The bill went down from approximately $900 billion to $780-$820 billion. That is still an astonishing amount, but significantly lower than the original (which was passed earlier by the House).

Democrats needed the support of at least two Republicans; this would give the bill a filibuster proof majority and enable Democrats to claim that both parties supported the bill. In other words; if Americans disapprove of the bill, they will aim their wrath at both Republicans and Democrats alike.

Smart politics, then, from a Democratic perspective. From a Republican perspective, however, supporting the bill is ludicrous.
The two Republicans breaking ranks are Senator Arlen Specter (Penn.) and Susan Collins (Maine). They are ‘moderate Republicans’ who often prefer working on a bipartisan basis, seemingly even when bipartisanship hurts the country and the Republican Party.

Their support for this crappy bill is pretty much inexcusable. Republicans should have united on this one; it would’ve forced President Barack Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to throw the plan into the dust bin and invite Republicans to the table in order to negotiate a new, cheaper and more effective one.

The bill is useless, counterproductive even, overly expensive, and unpopular. Specter and Collins should be derided for their support. Their support for this bill is unwise and very bad indeed for the GOP.

Ronaldo shows support for Michael Phelps

Brazilian football star Ronaldo has come out in support of Michael Phelps after the Olympic champion was suspended for three months after being photographed inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

The 32-year-old striker sympathised with the swimmer and thinks that he should be left alone after facing up to what he did.

Ronaldo himself was the centre of controversy last year when he was caught in the middle of a drugs and sex scandal with three transvestites after nightclubing in Rio de Janeiro.

Likewise, Phelps was thrust into a media maelstrom last weekend when a picture in British tabloid News of the World showed the winner of eight Olympic gold medals in Beijing using what looked like a glass bong typically used to smoke marijuana.

Rather than hide away and try and deny the story, Phelps admitted that he had been wrong and Ronaldo thinks that he should be commended and not hounded for that.

He told Brazilian reporters: "There is no need to persecute someone that has faced up to what he has done, having been at the Olympic Games and that has won almost everything that he can in his career.

"It is obvious that all sportsmen should set an example to youngsters, but Phelps has asked for forgiveness and faced up to things.

"As he said himself, it was just a moment of weakness."

Christian Bale’s Apology: I Acted Like a Punk

Christian Bale has called into the KROQ Kevin & Bean show in Los Angeles to apologize for his screaming and shouting mishap while filming Terminator Salvation.

The 35-year-old actor admits, “It’s been a miserable week for me. I know I have a pottymouth, everybody knows that now. I have no confusion whatsoever. I was out of order beyond belief, I was way out of order. I acted like a punk, I regret that and there is nodbody that has heard that tape that has been hit harder by it [than me]. I make no excuses for it, it is inexcusable and I hope that is absolutely clear.”

Christian continues, “One thing that has really disturbed me throughout this is I’m not familiar or comfortable with this notion of being a movie star. I’m an actor and I’m don’t quite know how to handle [the movie star thing]. The thing that disturbs me so much is that I’ve heard a lot of people saying that I seem to think I’m better than anybody else. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I’m a lucky SOB. I never forget that and that is why I put so much into what I do and I care so much about it . Sometimes that enthusiasm just goes awry.”

Mr. Bale ended, “I am embarrassed by it and I regret it. And I ask everybody to sit down and ask themselves, ‘Have they ever had a bad day and have they ever lost their temper and really regretted it immensely?’”

Bushfire conditions 'worse than Ash Wednesday'

Victoria faces a never-before-seen bushfire risk which could eclipse the deadly Ash Wednesday fires of 1983, as temperatures are expected to reach 46 degrees across south-east Australia this weekend.

Victoria fire authorities say a fire burning in a state park southeast of Melbourne is likely to break control lines and threaten nearby communities as temperatures are expected to hit the mid-40s by tomorrow backed by high winds.

The fire, in the Bunyip State Park, is currently five kilometres north of Tonimbuk near Pakenham and the towns of Labertouche and Tonimbuk are also in the firing line.

Jindivick, Bunyip, Drouin West and Longwarry have also been warned of the possibility of smoke falling embers and fire.

Temperatures to reach 46

Victoria faces a never-seen-before bushfire risk this weekend, with conditions tipped to be worse than those that led to the deadly Ash Wednesday fires of 1983. (AAP)

Temperatures of up to 46 degrees are forecast for Mildura and Swan Hill tomorrow with high winds.

Victorians are urged to stay away from parks and bushland some parks will be closed.

Fire fears in NSW

Fire crews across NSW also fear bushfire outbreaks as temperatures will soar from today and remain high until late on Sunday, when a southerly change is expected to bring cooler conditions.

The mercury will range from the mid 30s to the mid 40s in western and far western NSW and the Riverina.

Along the north and south coasts temperatures will range from the low-to-mid 30s until the change.

Around Sydney, the city will reach the mid-30s on the weekend with residents of western suburbs having to endure temperatures near 44 degrees.

The Rural Fire Service (RFS) is monitoring a number of lighting strikes that may become a problem as hot northwesterly winds strike parts of NSW.

SA expects resurgence of heat

The weather bureau said Adelaide would also have a 41 degree day on Saturday before a cooler change would drop the temperature back to the mid-20s for Sunday.

The extreme heat followed the city sweltering through six consecutive days above 40 degrees from last Tuesday to Sunday.

SA Health chief medical officer Paddy Phillips said people must continue to keep checking on their elderly relatives, friends and neighbours to ensure they are keeping cool and hydrated.

"It is vital that people use their common sense in dealing with the heat," he said.

"Please keep well hydrated with water and avoid alcoholic and caffeinated drinks, use your air conditioners and fans, dress sensibly, stay indoors where you can and seek medical attention if you are feeling unwell."

As Adelaide sweltered last week there was a spike in the number of sudden deaths, filling the city's morgue to near capacity.

South Australian coroner Mark Johns said heat appeared to be a factor in some of those deaths but more investigations would be required to determine if it was a direct cause.

Insider’s Mumbai:The Kala Ghoda Festival

As festivals go, the Kala Ghoda festival (February 7-15) is more of a huddle, maybe even a cosy chat between friends. This most-Mumbai-of-all-festivals is a happy melange of literature, music, street art, heritage walks, theatre, sidewalk food and children’s events.

It does not have the glamour of the Jaipur literary festival that immediately precedes it. There are no big name authors, Bollywood stars, or princely palaces for venues. What it does have is charm, oodles of it.

Kala Ghoda is a more intimate, local festival. It’s hard to carp about a festival which features an SMS (text message) poetry contest, for instance, or a whistling performance by the Indian Whistling Association. The Kala Ghoda is where you can eat samosas and momos while watching flamenco or folk dance. Or listen to some of India’s top musicians and bands for free. Or try, try and fail again to understand the performance poetry, but have a lot of fun doing it. Or people watch as goatee-ed intellectuals rub shoulders with curious street urchins.

Or learn how to write a graphic novel, or a film script. Or have a trained guide take you around Mumbai’s heritage buildings. Or gape at the cheerily eccentric art installations. ( Last year, a massive ferris wheel made of bicycles festooned with dabbas—steel lunchboxes peculiar to India—was the focal point, while a huge “mosquito man” drew crowds of bemused onlookers) Kala Ghoda has something for everybody, albeit in a slapdash, village fair sort of way.

To attend Kala Ghoda is also to take a mini-tour of Mumbai’s past. Most events take place in and around the Kala Ghoda (black horse) Square, named after a statue of Edward VII mounted on a horse. The statue has now been removed, but the name has stuck. The Square is surrounded by the regal 150-year-old Elphinstone College, the Jehangir Art Gallery, and the baroque gargoyle-strewn facade of Mumbai University, so it’s handy for sightseeing as well. Many of the readings are held in the tiny but charming garden of the heritage David Sassoon library, frequented by cats and surrounded by jackfruit trees. The library itself, an ornate Gothic building that dates back to 1870, is straight out of Dickens, with rows of rare and musty books, and elderly gentlemen snoring gently in planter’s chairs. Music events are often held on the sweeping stairs of the Asiatic library, overlooked by eight magnificent white Doric columns, and best seen at night when it is lit up.

The literature section of the festival has always concentrated on local writers, both the unpublished and the more established. The occasional big-name author, such as Paul Theroux, Indra Sinha, or Amit Chaudhuri, does drop by. Still, this festival is about the little guys, the ones who don’t write bestsellers or make Booker shortlists, but nevertheless keep writing, and talking about writing. Regional languages are often overlooked in discussions of Indian writing, but Kala Ghoda gives Hindi, Marathi, Urdu, and Gujarati writers a say. This year’s festival features discussions about the new wave of Indian pulp fiction, writing and activism, and how writers write in times of terror, among others. The “Open Mic”, which allows anyone to read or perform their poetry for ten minutes, is an institution which features some of Mumbai’s best poets, and some of its worst exhibitionists. Kala Ghoda also gives back. At some of the many free workshops you can learn how to write poetry, compose song lyrics, put together a graphic novel, get published, write for the stage, and write for children.

In pursuance of the National Policy on Education the Government of Kerala established the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education in the year 1990. The Directorate is envisaged as a central agency of the state government seeking to promote all round development in Higher Secondary Education by establishing appropriate philosophies, adequate institutional network, effective administrative systems and well-qualified and motivated staff necessary to carryout academic and administrative responsibilities.

The pre-degree courses had to be segregrated from University education to bring them under the ambit of authority of the Directorate. This had been done in a phased manner and the entire process of de-linking was completed in 2000-2001. Dearth of manpower and meagre infrastructure facilities have been the serious maladies tormenting the department right from its inception. But transcending all limitations, the concerted efforts by all levels of functionaries at the Directorate have helped it to become a full fledged department and to attain organisational success.
