The Ohio Attorney General, in response to an inquiry on the power of any County Sheriff during a snow or weather-related emergency, gave an opinion as to what the Ohio Revised Code says in that regard. The opinion reads that the Sheriff may declare a "snow emergency" and temporarily close any township, county or state road within his jurisdiction for the preservation of public peace.

This decision will come after consulting with the County EMA (Emergency Management Agency), elected officials, the County Engineer, ODOT and on-duty deputies. A Snow Emergency has three levels...

Level 1 - A Level One Snow Emergency means that roads (township and county, mainly secondary) are hazardous with the possibility of blowing and drifting snow. Roads are icy and drivers should use caution, if they choose to drive.

Level 2 - A Level Two Snow Emergency means that roads are hazardous (including primary roads) with blowing and drifting snow a possibility. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be on these roadways. Employees should contact their employers to see if they should report to work.

Level 3 - A Level Three Snow Emergency means that roads are closed to all non-essential personnel. No one should be out during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on any roadway in the county may subject themselves to citation or arrest.

The decision to call any of the above levels is a specific and difficult one. The Sheriff makes the initiative based on information he and his designees gather. These decisions shall be given to all local media. Please do not call the Sheriff's Office or 9-1-1 during such emergencies, listen to your favorite radio station for information. If they do not have the information, or are not giving it out, change to another station. The Sheriff will immediately announce when conditions have downgraded and the level changes.

African Armyworms Invade Liberia

Your Ad Here

Many have heard of army ants, but perhaps not armyworms. But much like the military might of an army, a host of crop-destroying armyworms has invaded Liberia.

Armyworms are, in fact, not worms, but caterpillers. They are the larvae of of nocturnal moths, of the species Spodoptera exempta. Their name comes from their "habit" of crawling en masse into fields of crops.

Besides being known as the African armyworm, it's also known as the okalombo or Kommandowurm or nutgrass armyworm.

The African armyworm larvae feed on grasses, early stages of cereal crops , sugar cane, and occasionally on coconut. During the rainy seasons, the adult moths spread and begin laying eggs in grasses and food crops. Each female lays between 500 and 1,000 eggs in her 10-day adulthood.

Currently, the situation in Liberia is so bad that the country has declared a state of emergency to deal with the invasion. The plague has affected 300,000 rural residents in central and northwestern parts of the country thus far.

Winfred Hammond, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) told CNN that the infestation started sometime during the week of January 12 but spread quickly, to 50 villages in just a week. He added:

"The plague is being described as Liberia's worst in 30 years. The last African armyworm outbreak in the sub-region occurred in Ghana in 2006."

The weapon of choice against these pests would, unfortunately, be pesticides. A different approach, a biological one using a virus fatal to armyworms, NPV, is also being investigated in various countries, including the UK, Canada and Tanzania, but that is a long-term approach and will not help in this case.

Arrest ordered in Jason Caffey child support case

Your Ad Here

An Atlanta judge has ordered the arrest of former NBA player Jason Caffey, who's accused of failing to pay thousands in child support.

In October, a judge in Alabama rejected a bankruptcy case filed by Caffey, clearing the way for him to be sued for child support.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Cynthia D. Wright issued an arrest warrant Tuesday over Caffey's failure to obey a court order that he pay more than $200,000 in child support and legal fees to Lorunda Brown and her attorney.

"We've been trying to get his attention and this should do it," said Brown's attorney, Randy Kessler. Kessler said Brown is the mother of Caffey's 6-year-old son.

Caffey played nine years in the NBA for the Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks.

A listing under the name Jason Caffey in the Atlanta area was disconnected Monday night, and an attorney who represented Caffey in the past didn't immediately return an e-mail seeking comment.

Icy conditions prompt delays

Your Ad Here

The ice storm that pretty much had northern Texas at a standstill Tuesday reached just far enough south to have parts of Central Texas out scraping windshields and rearranging schedules.

Ice and freezing rain Tuesday – the product of a cold front that sent temperatures plunging below freezing – triggered dozens of accidents on roads in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and as far south as Waco, according to reports from The Associated Press. The wintry weather caused the delay or cancellation of nearly 200 flights out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

At Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport, three American Eagle flights were canceled early Tuesday because of conditions in Dallas. All three major airlines at Killeen-Fort Hood – Continental, Delta and American Airlines

– could not get the first flights scheduled to depart Tuesday off the ground because the corresponding inbound flights never arrived, a result of Monday night's foggy conditions.

John Sutton, director of aviation at the airport, said local conditions Tuesday did not prevent any incoming or outgoing flights. Any delays and cancelations were the result of conditions at other airports.

"Tonight's a different story," Sutton said Tuesday evening. "We just don't know, but it doesn't look good."

Locally, the National Weather Service issued an ice storm warning for Central Texas that began Tuesday afternoon and continued until this morning. The NWS forecast called for increased chances of freezing rain overnight, with temperatures dipping into the mid-20s and up to a tenth of an inch in ice accumulation.

Tuesday at Fort Hood, the threat of ice prompted an early dismissal on post. Physical training for soldiers was canceled for today, and reporting time for military personnel and garrison non-essential personnel was delayed until 9 a.m. today.

All Killeen ISD athletic events were postponed Tuesday, many rescheduled for today (see story, page C1). The start of classes for Florence ISD and Lampasas ISD were delayed until 10 a.m. today.

Central Texas College, Tarleton-Central Texas and Temple College all closed classes early Tuesday.

Coryell County issued an ice storm warning Tuesday afternoon. County government buildings and operations closed at 4 p.m. In Copperas Cove, city building openings and operations were delayed until 9:30 a.m. today.

Suspended drum Major John Coleman leaves Cleveland Firefighters Memorial Pipes and Drums band

Drum major quits, citing hurt feelings

Drum Major John Coleman, suspended last week for six months for nodding and waving to President Barack Obama, said Tuesday that he will not return to the Cleveland Firefighters Memorial Pipes and Drums band.

"There are too many bridges burned with the pipe band, too many hurt feelings on both sides," said Coleman, 53, fire inspector for Cleveland Heights and a 17-year veteran of the band.

The band marched in the inaugural parade, and as Coleman led the band past the president, he nodded his head and waved at Obama. He said the president waved first, and he was acknowledging the commander-in-chief.

But band members had been warned not to make any gestures, so he was suspended from the band, which is made up of about four dozen firefighters from several local departments as well as civilians.

The story gained national attention Monday and became the subject of hot debate. The band removed its roster from its Web site Tuesday and deleted its phone number.

"There are some of the members of the band who wouldn't want me back," said Coleman, who as the drum major was the face of the organization and was often interviewed by the media.

"I figure it's best for the band if I leave," he said.

Band leader Mike Engle, the pipe major, was out of town Tuesday and unavailable to comment. A statement issued by the band read: "We're sorry to see him leave. We are greatly disappointed that this issue has caused so much heartache. It's been a disheartening few days."

Coleman will not be leading the band in the St. Patrick's Day parade in Cleveland for the first time in 17 years. "But I could still march in the parade with the firefighters or the Ancient Order of the Hibernians," he said.

He will then have a knee replacement operation he had been putting off until after the parade.

N.Y. - Scores of schools from the Finger Lakes to Long Island are closed or delaying the start of classes because of a storm that's expected to dump up to 16 inches of snow on some upstate areas.

Only a handful of school closings are reported Wednesday morning in western New York, where up to 4 inches had fallen and up to 12 inches is expected. Most of the closings are in the eastern half of the state, where forecasts predict 8 to 16 inches of snow in the Adirondacks and up to a foot in the Albany area by Wednesday night.

What was the first large scale digital computer?

Your Ad Here

Presper Eckert and John Mauchly were the first to patent a digital computing device, the ENIAC computer. A patent infringement case (Sperry Rand Vs. Honeywell, 1973) voided the ENIAC patent as a derivative of John Atanasoff's invention.

The ENIAC Story

ENIAC, short for Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer, was the first general-purpose electronic computer. It was the first Turing-complete, digital computer capable of being reprogrammed to solve a full range of computing problems. ENIAC was designed and built to calculate artillery firing tables for the U.S. Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory.

The ENIAC held immediate importance. When it was announced in 1946 it was heralded in the press as a "Giant Brain." It boasted speeds one thousand times faster than electro-mechanical machines, a leap in computing power that no single machine has matched. This mathematical power, coupled with general-purpose programmability, excited scientists and industrialists. The inventors promoted the spread of these new ideas by teaching a series of lectures on computer architecture.

The ENIAC's design and construction were financed by the United States Army during World War II. The construction contract was signed on June 5, 1943, and work on computer was begun in secret by the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering starting the following month under the code name "Project PX". The completed machine was unveiled on February 14, 1946 at the University of Pennsylvania, having cost almost $500,000. ENIAC was shut down on November 9, 1946 for a refurbishment and a memory upgrade, and was transferred to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland in 1947. There, on July 29, 1947, it was turned on and would be in continuous operation until 11:45 p.m. on October 2, 1955.

ENIAC was conceived and designed by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert of the University of Pennsylvania. The team of design engineers assisting the development included Bob Shaw (function tables), Chuan Chu (divider/square-rooter), Kite Sharpless (master programmer), Arthur Burks (multiplier), Harry Huskey (reader/printer), Jack Davis (accumulators) and Iredell Eachus Jr.

Energy Transfer, Chesapeake In Pact For Gas Pipeline

Your Ad Here

Energy Transfer Partners L.P. (ETP) Tuesday said it reached a deal with Chesapeake Energy Corp. (CHK) to build a large interstate pipeline to transport natural gas from the booming Haynseville Shale formation in Texas and Louisiana.

The "Tiger Pipeline" will cost $1 billion to $1.2 billion to build and will have an initial capacity of at least 1.25 billion cubic feet of gas a day, the companies said in a press release. The 42-inch diameter line will stretch 178 miles through the Haynseville Shale from an Energy Transfer Partners' system near Carthage, Texas to interconnections with several interstate pipelines in Louisiana. The pipeline is expected to be in service by mid-2011.

Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners will build the line, while Chesapeake, the biggest producer of natural gas in the U.S., has committed to use about 1 billion cubic feet a day of pipeline capacity for 15 years.

Phil Weiss, an analyst with Argus Research Co. in New York, said the commitments by both Chesapeake and Energy Transfer Partners underscore the potential of the Haynesville.

"It does give you an indication of the size of the field, and Chesapeake is not the only company that believes in it," Weiss said.

The Haynseville is one of several shale-rock formations scattered under various parts of the U.S. that contain enormous amounts of natural gas, but had until recently proven too technically difficult and expensive to exploit. Over the past couple of years, however, producers have drilled down, then horizontally through the dense rock, unlocking the gas within and fueling a boom in domestic U.S. gas production.

Memphis schools seek tax hike; Supt. Cash fears funding loss

Your Ad Here

In a year with drops in property values, Memphis City Schools is pushing for a 57-cent tax increase for schools to make up for money cut by the City Council last year and providing for other increases.

Without the added revenue, the schools can't submit a legal budget to the state and would lose state and federal funding, said Supt. Kriner Cash.

"We jeopardize operations Aug. 1, and we close and are broke on Oct. 3," Cash told council members Tuesday in a move to impress upon them how much the city's public schools need the money.

"We've done the analysis. That's what we need."

Of the current base tax rate of $4.04 per $100 of assessed value, city and county taxpayers now pay $2.02 for schools. The 28 percent increase would add $221 in new taxes to property valued at $150,000 and $177 for a home valued at $120,000.

School funding has long been a key issue in the area, but it hit a new level last year when the council abruptly cut $66 million from the city schools budget, which is largely funded by the county. The city has argued it is not obligated to fund the schools, even though it had routinely supplemented the school budget for years.

The school system had to trim staff and fund daily operations -- including $15 million in initiatives Cash is rolling out in his first year -- with $30 million from its reserves.

The city schools sued the city over the cut, hoping to force a ruling that would define the city's responsibility.

While closing arguments in the case are scheduled Feb. 9 in Chancery Court, there's no timeline for when the judge will rule. City Council leaders have said nothing about their plans to fund city schools this year.

As a result, Cash fears the same funding dilemma is heating up as governments head into budget season awash in a recession that has battered property values and tax bases.

With a $70 million shortfall between what the county said it will pay to fund the city schools and what the state requires, Cash is mincing few words, saying he is prepared to close schools.

"I'm ready to go on a campaign that gets this information out in a clear and unequivocal way," Cash told the board of education late Monday. "We do not have a solution for the 2009-10 year."

Cash sent the proposed funding rate to county school administrators last week, seeking input on it and a larger plan that eventually could allow the districts to unite for the purpose of securing taxing authority. As it stands, any tax increase would have to be approved by the County Commission.

After the fallout from the lawsuit last fall, elected state and local officials began meeting in an ad hoc education funding committee, trying to iron out which governmental body should be responsible for funding schools.

"The issue has always been, should it be the county commission or the two school boards?" said Cato Johnson, committee member. "Who should the single source be?"

Both districts are polishing a joint proposal arguing that the taxing authority rightfully belongs to them.

"The school systems feel like it's in their best interest to be able to control the tax rate," said Deidre Malone, chairwoman of the committee and county commission.

"They feel they are in a better position to be accountable to the people."

The committee is expected to hear the proposal, plus proposals from county commissioners Mike Ritz and Mike Carpenter, who argue that citizens are better served if the county retains the authority.

All three will be introduced to the public in a forum early next month.

"After the public has had a chance to hear them, the ad hoc committee will vote on the one we want to present to the legislature," Malone said.

Any move to change taxing authority must be approved by voters. Malone expects it will be a hard battle.

Crooked X’s ‘Rock N’ Roll Dream’ Chronicled In MTV Documentary

Your Ad Here

source : Mtv Newsroom

MTV told you about Crooked X, four 14-year-old hard-rockers from Oklahoma, back when MTV picked MTV Rock Rookies of 2009.

Well, today is a pretty huge day for these teens, who don’t play music like any teens MTV know. Their self-titled debut album is in stores now, and at midnight, a special mini-documentary on the band, “Crooked X: Rock N’ Roll Dream,” will premiere on MTV.

“The special is about our journey from playing at a place called Joe’s Crab Shack in Tulsa to opening for KISS for 35,000 people,” frontman Forrest French told MTV News. “It’s just the steps of what you go through to get up there. It’s only 30 minutes, but I guess if it goes well, it may turn into something bigger.”

Bigger means even more mainstream exposure for the teens, who have already had recent high-profile appearances on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and the halftime show at the final Dallas Cowboys game at Texas Stadium.

And, despite their age, a lot of fans have been won over during these live performances. “The first couple of songs, they’re like, ‘Hey, are they really playing?’ ” bassist Jesse Cooper said. “And then, three or four songs through the set, they’re going, ‘Hey, they really can do this!’ ”

Still think they’re just some novelty act? Let the documentary speak for itself. The band said that over 400 hours of footage was shot for the short doc — and the results should prove that this band is to be taken seriously.

Shane Keough Bio

Shane Keough (born September 11, 1986) is a minor league outfielder in the Oakland Athletics farm system. Keough appeared in the Bravo reality show The Real Housewives of Orange County, in which his mother, Jeana Keough, was one of the featured "housewives."

Keough is the oldest child of Matt Keough, a former pitcher for the Oakland A's and current executive with the team and Jeana Keough, a former model, actress and Playboy Playmate who is now a realtor for RE/MAX in Coto de Caza, California. He has a younger sister Kara, who attends University of California at Berkeley and also acts and models, and one younger brother Colton.

Shane is still trying to make a name for himself. Scouts score Keough as a having poor hitting skills with little to no power but with some speed in the outfield. Keough entered the Major League Baseball Draft in 2005 and was drafted by the Oakland A's in the 36th round as a draft-and-follow pick. Keough attended Yavapai College in Arizona to gain more playing time and hopefully attract more attention from the scouts. He was signed by the A's in June, 2006. In the fall of 2006, he played outfield for the Phoenix Athletics in the Arizona League, which is classified as a rookie league. Keough played for the Vancouver Canadians single A Short Season Baseball team as an outfielder in 2007 and played for the single A Kane County Cougars in 2008. It appears as if he may have taken performance enhancement drugs prior to the last baseball season.

Besides Shane's father, his grandfather Marty and great-uncle Joe have both played in the major leagues.

Tania Zaetta Gets Apology for Sex with Soldiers Accusation (PHOTOS)

Your Ad Here

Australian actress Tania Zaetta received an apology from Australia’s military chief on Tuesday for falsely accusing her of engaging in sex with elite special forces soldiers during a 2008 concert tour
at a military base in Afghanistan.

Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston met with Zaetta and her family to apologize for naming her in a defense briefing note, which was leaked to the press.

“There was no substance to the allegations,” Houston said in a statement. “Ms. Zaetta gave her time and her talent to entertain our forces serving in Afghanistan and she deserves our praise and our thanks. I have also made clear to Ms. Zaetta that she is welcome to again join a Forces Entertainment Tour in the near future.”

Zaetta, considered “one of the first foreigners to conquer Bollywood,” toured Australian Defence Force bases in Afghanistan and Iraq during early 2008 with a group of entertainers. A draft ministerial “hot issues brief” was published in various newspapers intimating that the 38-year-old actress had engaged in sex with several members of the Australian Special Air Services Regiment. Other entertainers touring with the group said in media interviews that they were so “managed” and tired during the trip that they could not imagine that this could be possible.

“I’ve heard of quickies mate, but you’d have to be really quick - we didn’t have time to do anything,” said John Clinton, from the country rock band The Wolverines. Additionally, various members of the Government of Australia denied that this was seriously suggested. Zaetta strongly denied the allegation, and demanded an apology.

Late last year Australia’s defense department and Zaetta reached an agreement to compensate her for “an unacceptable breach of privacy” in relation to “false allegations.”

U-17 World Cup May Be Out of Africa

Your Ad Here

The United States under-17 men’s national team recently learned its opponents for the final round of qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. What remains up in the air is the location for the finals, which were supposed to take place in nine stadiums in Nigeria from Oct. 25 to Nov. 15.

Before the American men, who have played in every tournament at this age level, get to play in the finals, they must first face Canada, Honduras and Cuba in a round-robin group in Tijuana, Mexico, from April 21 to May 2. The top two teams in Group A and Group B (host Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Trinidad and Tobago) will advance to the finals.

And up until early this week, it appeared that FIFA would keep its commitment to host three international tournaments on the African continent, one year before the 2010 World Cup finals are scheduled to be played in South Africa. In addition to the U-17 tournament, FIFA will host the Confederations Cup in South Africa (June 14 to 28) and the U-20 World Cup in Egypt (Sept. 25 to Oct. 16).

But now those grand plans to put Africa center stage have taken a hit after one of FIFA’s inspection committees, led by Jack Warner, returned a less-than-favorable report on a visit this week to Nigeria. The group’s weeklong inspection of the nine locales Nigeria has proposed for the tournament has not gone well for the prospective hosts.

Contrary to his statements in the BBC report, Warner told FIFA.com: “I am pleased with what I saw and with my discussions with the governors of Enugu, Kano, Delta and Lagos states, and Alhaji Abdulrahman Hassan Gimba, the Honorable Minister and chairman of the National Sports Commission. There is a lot of work to be done but I am sure Nigeria will pull it off and be ready.”

As is the case with South Africa, any hint that the tournament in Nigeria will not happen as planned raises delicate questions for FIFA. While the World Cup is still more than a year in the future, there is little margin for error with the event in Nigeria. Any possibility that it might be moved to another country is hostage to the calendar and FIFA’s stubborn commitment to holding an international tournament in a country that probably is not ready.

Richard Paul Evans: When it Comes to Money, 'Men Are From Mars and Women Are From Venus'

Your Ad Here

Richard Paul Evans, author of the new book The 5 Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me for Women, was on the Glen Beck Program today, and what he had to say was somewhat condescending. When asked why the lessons are different for women (The book is a new take on his previously published The 5 Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me), Evans said he realized that the vast majority of expenditures are now made by women, and yet "women have never been taught because they grow up with these mixed messages that, you know, good girls don't worry their pretty little heads about money."

I'm all for a book of financial tips aimed at women--in fact, one of my favorites is Janet Bodnar's Money Smart Women: Everything You Need to Know to Achieve a Lifetime of Financial Security (disclosure: she is a former editor of mine.) But Evans' assertion that women in general (or "good girls") are taught not to worry about money is way off base (and "pretty little heads"? Come on.) Women are making expenditures because women are more independent these days. And often, independence means they're making their own money. Plus, a lot of those women, like me, actually learned about money growing up.

In this recent interview, Evans explains why he thinks Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus when it comes to money. He says women are vulnerable to "the burnt-toast syndrome:"

You're having breakfast, and a slice gets burned--who gets it? Women do that with money, too," he says. "They trade their needs for somebody else's wants."

Doesn't everyone at one time or another trade their needs for somebody else's wants? It's called a relationship. I'm not quite sure what he means: he wants a monster truck, she wants a convertible? Please. Evans appears to be the king of overgeneralization.

Reports over the weekend claimed that McCartney had sought and received the all-clear from his four adult children to marry Shevell, and that the New York State Supreme Court had granted Shevell a divorce from Bruce Blakeman in December, clearing her for the marriage.

49 year old Nancy Shevell is a board member of New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), a lawyer and former Nassau County legislator. Her relationship with McCartney was revealed in November when paparazzi captured pictures of the pair making out.

Ted Johnson and Chris Nowinski brain damage part of alarming trend

New research shows concussions to be worse than we thought

Concussions are worse for the brain than we thought. Just ask Ted Johnson or Chris Nowinski. Ted Johnson had brain damage so bad after his NFL career that he struggled for years in day to day activities. After looking at the information on the brains of athletes who died young, the results coming back are staggering.

“I can definitely point to 2002 when I got back-to-back concussions. That’s where the problems started,” said Johnson, who retired after those two concussions. “The depression, the sleep disorders and the mental fatigue.”

The brains of the men who suffered these head injuries

“What’s been surprising is that it’s so extensive,” said Dr. Ann McKee, a neuropathologist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts, and co-director of the CSTE. “It’s throughout the brain, not just on the superficial aspects of the brain, but it’s deep inside.”

The brain of a 45-year-old football player with chronic traumatic encephalopathy shows more brown tangles.

The Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy, along with other research institutions, identified traumatic encephalopathy in the brains of late NFL football players John Grimsley, Mike Webster, Andre Waters, Justin Strzelczyk and Terry Long.

“The idea that you can whack your head hundreds of times in your life and knock yourself out and get up and be fine is gone,” said Nowinski. “We know we can’t do that anymore. This causes long-term damage.”

1989: Massacre in Tiananmen Square

Your Ad Here

Several hundred civilians have been shot dead by the Chinese army during a bloody military operation to crush a democratic protest in Peking's (Beijing) Tiananmen Square.

Tanks rumbled through the capital's streets late on 3 June as the army moved into the square from several directions, randomly firing on unarmed protesters.

The injured were rushed to hospital on bicycle rickshaws by frantic residents shocked by the army's sudden and extreme response to the peaceful mass protest.

Demonstrators, mainly students, had occupied the square for seven weeks, refusing to move until their demands for democratic reform were met.

The protests began with a march by students in memory of former party leader Hu Yaobang, who had died a week before.

But as the days passed, millions of people from all walks of life joined in, angered by widespread corruption and calling for democracy.

Tonight's military offensive came after several failed attempts to persuade the protesters to leave.

Throughout the day the government warned it would do whatever it saw necessary to clamp down on what it described as "social chaos".

But even though violence was expected, the ferocity of the attack took many by surprise, bringing condemnation from around the world.

US President George Bush said he deeply deplored the use of force, and UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said she was "shocked and appalled by the shootings".

Amid the panic and confusion students could be heard shouting "fascists stop killing," and "down with the government".

At a nearby children's hospital operating theatres were filled with casualties with gunshot wounds, many of them local residents who were not taking part in the protests.

Early this morning at least 30 more were killed in two volleys of gunfire, which came without warning. Terrified crowds fled, leaving bodies in the road.

Meanwhile reports have emerged of troops searching the main Peking university campus for ringleaders, beating and killing those they suspect of co-ordinating the protests.

Mars Hill Church

Your Ad Here

Mars Hill Church lives for Jesus as a city within the city—knowing culture, loving people, and seeing lives transformed to live for Jesus.

Below is the original Mars Hill Statement of Faith. Additionally, you can reference the Gospel Coalition Confessional Statement for further detail of our beliefs. For more details you can watch the sermon series Doctrine for a more in depth look at our beliefs.

The Scriptures

We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the verbally inspired word of God, the final authority for faith and life, inerrant in the original writings, infallible, and God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:20, 21; Matthew 5:18; John 16:12, 13).

The Godhead

We believe in one Triune God, eternally existing in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—co-eter¬nal in being, co-eternal in nature, co-equal in power and glory, having the same attributes and perfec¬tions (Deuteronomy 6:4; 2 Corinthians 13:14)
the Person and Work of Christ

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man (John 1:1–2, 14; Luke 1:35). We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished ¬our redemption through His death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice, and that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead (Romans 3:24; 1 Peter 2:24; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:3–5). We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry as Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate (Acts 1:9, 10; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 9:24; Romans 8:34; 1 John 2:1–2). We believe Jesus is coming again to judge the living and the dead (1 Peter 4:5; Romans 14:9; 2 Timothy 4:1).

The Person and Work of The Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a person who convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; He is the Supernatural Agent in regenera¬tion, baptizing all believers into the body of Christ, indwelling and sealing them unto the day of redemp¬tion (John 16:8–11; 2 Corinthians 3:6; 1 Corinthians 12:12–14; Romans 8:9; Ephesians 5:18).

The Total Depravity of Man

We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that through Adam’s sin the race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; man is totally depraved and of himself utterly unable to remedy his lost condition (Genesis 1:26, 27; Romans 3:22, 23; 5:12; Ephesians 2:1–3, 12).

Salvation

We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins (Ephesians 2:8–10; John 1:12; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:18–19).

Eternal Security and Assurance of Believers

We believe that all the redeemed, once saved, are kept by God’s power and are thus secure in Christ forever (John 6:37–40; 10:27–30; Romans 8:1, 38, 39; 1 Corinthians 1:4–8; 1 Peter 1:5). We believe that it is the privilege of believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God’s Word, which clearly forbids the use of Christian liberty as an occasion for the flesh (Romans 13:13, 14; Galatians 5:13; Titus 2:11–15).

The Ministry and Spiritual Gifts

We believe that God is sovereign in the bestowing of spiritual gifts. It is, however, the believer’s responsi¬bility to attempt to develop their sovereignly given spiritual gift(s). The baptism of the Holy Spirit occurs at conversion and is the placing of the believer into the Body of Christ. We also believe that particular spiritual gift(s) are neither essential, nor prove the presence of the Holy Spirit, nor are an indication of deep spiritual experience (1 Corinthians 12:7, 11, 13; Ephesians 4:7–8). We believe that God does hear and answer the prayer of faith, in accordance with His own will, for the sick and afflicted (John 15:7; 1 John 5:14, 15). We believe that it is the privilege and responsibility of every believer to minister according to the gift(s) and grace of God that is given to him (Romans 12:1–8; 1 Corinthians 13; 1 Peter 4:10–11).

The Church

We believe that the church, which is the body and espoused bride of Christ, is a spiritual organism made up of all born-again persons (Ephesians 1:22, 23; 5:25–27; 1 Corinthians 12:12–14; 2 Corinthians 11:2). We believe that the establishment and continuance of local churches is clearly taught and defined in the New Testament Scriptures (Acts 14:27; 18:22; 20:17; 1 Timothy 3:1–3; Titus 1:5–11). We believe in the autonomy of the local churches, free of any external authority and control (Acts 13:1–4; 15:19–31; 20:28; Romans 16:1,4; 1 Corinthians 3:9, 16; 1 Corinthians 5:4–7, 13; 1 Peter 5:1–4). We recognize believer’s baptism and the Lord’s supper as scriptural means of testimony for the church (Matthew 28:19, 20; Acts 2:41, 42; Acts 18:8; 1 Corinthians 11:23–26).

AISD in line for $13.8M

Your Ad Here

The Abilene Independent School District and other Big Country schools stand to receive millions of dollars in federal grants in the stimulus package the House is expected to vote on today.

The AISD could receive nearly $14 million over fiscal years 2009 and 2010.

But Big Country congressmen have not been swayed by the possibility of a boost in school funding as estimated by the Congressional Research Service or by President Barack Obama reaching out to them Tuesday on Capitol Hill.

Abilene's congressman, U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer, and the rest of the delegation said they are not supportive of the $825 billion American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009, regardless of school funding.

"The question should be: (on) every dollar that we're spending, because we're going to have to go borrow it, will it stimulate the economy and not whether these projects are worthwhile," Neugebauer, R-Lubbock, said.

The stimulus bill includes tax cuts, funding for transportation projects, school funding and other measures touted to boost the economy.

The AISD could receive nearly $5.3 million in federal funding for construction, nearly $4 million to help ensure students in districts with high numbers or percentages of poor children meet academic standards, and more than $4.5 million to educate children with disabilities, according to CRS estimates.

In the AISD's 2007-08 budget, federal money accounted for about $1.2 million of the district's total $114 million general fund revenues. The rest of the funds came from state and local taxes.

Big Country superintendents couldn't be reached Tuesday because most districts canceled class because of icy roads.

The dollars might be a worthy means to fund education, but lawmakers haven't had the opportunity to debate whether school funding would stimulate the economy, officials with Neugebauer's office said.

For another Big Country lawmaker the answer was clear: The school funding will not stimulate the economy.

"It will not create permanent jobs," said U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Midland, of the 11th Congressional District. "It will not create permanent wealth, and it comes at a cost that our great-grandchildren will still be paying the interest on that debt when they're adults."

He said he trusts residents in his district to provide their children with a good education, along with state funds.

U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry said he is not swayed by federal education grants that could come to his 13th Congressional District.

If a person is focused solely on what he'll get out of the bill, the school funding sounds great, Thornberry, R-Clarendon, said. But it doesn't sound so good when a lawmaker takes the bigger picture into consideration.

The bill is a "grab bag" of 150 federal programs, and many clearly won't create jobs at all, he said.

"I think the approach of the stimulus bill is to spread an enormous amount of money in as many places as possible," Thornberry said.

The Big Country delegation isn't wary only of school funding but the entire package.

But they were appreciative that Obama took the trouble to spend about an hour making his case for the stimulus package before House Republicans on Tuesday at the Capitol.

He also listened to their point of view.

"I'm not sure that many minds were changed, but I think it's important to be able to talk to one another," Thornberry said.

Obama told them he thinks the economy is in serious shape, and that justifies shortcuts to get the stimulus package through quickly.

"But a number of people talked about the cost and about the fact that this is not money the government has lying around," Thornberry said. "It's got to be taxed or borrowed out of one part of the economy for government to spend it in another part of the economy."

Neugebauer said he favors tax cuts and other methods of stimulating investment and job creation in the economy -- not government spending. He's also unhappy about the $1.2 trillion deficit the country is on track for this year.

"That number could easily go higher and probably will go higher with a stimulus package," Neugebauer said.

What's more, the price tag of the stimulus package is more than $1 trillion when the cost of paying it back is counted, Neugebauer said.

Conaway said Obama was "charming and self-deprecating but unpersuasive in his appeal."

Conaway plans to oppose the bill, saying that if the country is in a temporary recession, whether it lasts multiple years or not, then why borrow money that will never be repaid to address a short-term problem?

"And that's what we're asking Congress to do and the American people to swallow in a giant way," Conaway said.

For better or worse, John Updike produced a nearly endless stream of work

For David Foster Wallace, he was one of "the Great Male Narcissists." Martin Amis declared that the last section of his 1989 memoir "Self-Consciousness" was "to my knowledge the best thing yet written on what it is like to get older: age, and the only end of age." Nicholson Baker celebrated his "assured touch, [his] adjectival resourcefulness."

But for me, the lasting image of John Updike, who died Tuesday of lung cancer at age 76, is as a self-described "freelancer," who produced a nearly endless stream of book reviews, novels, stories, poems and occasional pieces -- more than 60 volumes' worth in all -- because he felt he'd be forgotten if he didn't keep his name in print.

I met Updike in November, when I did a public interview with him at UCLA Live. He had been sick, he said, with pneumonia. He looked thin, but he was hearty, dressed in a suit and a pink tie. Before the event, we sat in the green room at Royce Hall and talked baseball, going back and forth about the Yankees (my team) and the Red Sox (his), as well as the Philadelphia Phillies, who had won the World Series a few weeks before.

It's easy to forget, amid all his writing, that one of Updike's early masterpieces was a 1960 essay for the New Yorker called "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu," in which he describes Ted Williams' final game, a spectacle he almost effortlessly elevated to the level of art. "The affair between Boston and Ted Williams," Updike wrote, "has been no mere summer romance; it has been a marriage, composed of spats, mutual disappointments, and, toward the end, a mellowing hoard of shared memories. It falls into three stages, which may be termed Youth, Maturity, and Age; or Thesis, Antithesis, and Synthesis; or Jason, Achilles, and Nestor."

This was Updike's gift: the felicitous phrase, the attention to detail, the ability to make the mundane profound. And yet, this was also his greatest limitation, for in his lesser efforts, he never quite penetrated the surface of his language, leaving us to skitter along the exterior without breaking through to the emotions underneath.

To my surprise, Updike was very open about this; he brought it up, once we were onstage. Did he write too much? he asked rhetorically. Probably. But he had made a promise to himself early on that he would publish a book a year, and a novel every other year, and he saw no reason to rethink it now.

Had he written some books that hadn't worked? Certainly. What writer of his longevity hadn't, on occasion, missed the mark? But better that, he suggested, than to hole up, a la Saul Bellow, and only deliver a piece of writing every five years. Think of the anxiety to deliver, the pressure to produce a masterwork. It was far more useful, he had decided, to be front and center in the culture, to be a working writer, to do the best he could and then move on.

Updike is commonly regarded as the poet laureate of the suburbs, but that's not really accurate. Yes, he evoked a certain middle-class domestic culture at the precise moment (the 1960s and 1970s) that it was exploding; without him, there'd be no Rick Moody, no Ethan Canin -- to name just two.

But more than suburban life, Updike was really an explorer of consciousness, of the mental drama; this is why Wallace derided him as a solipsist. Even his most celebrated works, the Rabbit novels, are less about domestic life than they are sagas of one man -- confused, guilt-ridden, tormented by his own not-fully-thought-out choices -- struggling to make sense of himself. For Updike, it didn't happen unless he'd thought it through, reflected on it. If that, at times, could keep us at a distance, it was the clearest expression of who he was.

This is why, of all his contemporaries, Updike was the most effective critic; for more than 40 years, he reviewed books and art for the New Yorker and the New York Review of Books with acuity and grace. He described it as a way to keep his hand in, but in fact, criticism became a parallel spoke of his career, a balance to his fiction, a way to think about, as well as to produce, literature.

Clearly, the two pursuits spoke to each other within him; "Rabbit, Run" -- published in 1960, when he was just 28 -- was written in reaction to another iconic novel of its moment, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road." What Updike wanted, he explained on that night at UCLA, was to write a book in which going on the road had consequences, to explore what might have happened had Kerouac's Sal Paradise left a wife and child behind.

Such a statement speaks to a certain rigid moral vision, which was again, perhaps, both a weakness and a strength. Updike was not a revolutionary writer, and he may have suffered from having lived -- and written -- through revolutionary times. His least compelling books, such as 2006's "Terrorist," are attempts to remain relevant; he was at his finest when he described the world he saw.

Real Housewives... in Kane County

There's a good chance that Elfstrom Stadium and the Kane County Cougars will be included in this evening's episode of a popular reality television show on the Bravo network.

Last season, the son of one of the featured women of "The Real Housewives of Orange County", Jeana Keough was Cougars outfielder Shane Keough. Shane, who is occasionally included on the television series, played the entire '08 season at Kane County as an outfielder in the Oakland A's farm system.

During a game last August, Jeana and the Housewives crew visited Geneva and attended a Cougars game at Elfstrom Stadium.

The closing footage from last week's episode hinted strongly towards the possibility of tonight's new episode including footage taken from the Housewives' visit last summer.

The show airs tonight at 9 p.m. CDT on the Bravo network and is typically re-aired at various times throughout the week. Interested fans can visit www.bravotv.com for complete program listings or also visit www.kccougars.com.
