"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" led all films with nominations for the 81st annual Academy Awards on Thursday morning, picking up 13.
The film, about a man who ages in reverse, earned nods for best picture, best director (David Fincher), best actor (Brad Pitt), best supporting actress (Taraji P. Henson) and best adapted screenplay as well as several other picks.

The record for Oscar nominations is 14, held by "All About Eve" and "Titanic." Both films won best picture.

"Slumdog Millionaire," the sleeper hit about a Mumbai orphan who seeks fame and love through "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" earned 10 nominations, including best picture, best director (Danny Boyle) and best adapted screenplay.

"The Dark Knight," 2008's top-grossing film, earned a best supporting actor nomination for the late Heath Ledger but was shut out of other major categories. The film received eight nominations overall.

In a mild surprise, "The Reader," based on the best-selling novel about a postwar German boy who has an affair with an older woman with a secret, took home nominations for best picture, best actress (Kate Winslet) and best director (Stephen Daldry).

The other best picture nominees are "Frost/Nixon" and "Milk."

The nominees for best actor are Sean Penn ("Milk"), Frank Langella ("Frost/Nixon"), Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler"), Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor") and Pitt.

The nominees for best actress are Winslet, Anne Hathaway ("Rachel Getting Married"), Meryl Streep ("Doubt"), Angelina Jolie ("Changeling") and Melissa Leo ("Frozen River").

The nominees for best supporting actor are Ledger, Josh Brolin ("Milk"), Michael Shannon ("Revolutionary Road"), Robert Downey Jr. ("Tropic Thunder") and Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Doubt").

The nominees for best supporting actress are Penelope Cruz ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona"), Amy Adams ("Doubt"), Viola Davis ("Doubt"), Henson and Marisa Tomei ("The Wrestler").

The nominees for best director are Fincher, Boyle, Gus Van Sant ("Milk"), Ron Howard ("Frost/Nixon") and Daldry.

The nominees for best animated feature are "WALL-E," "Kung Fu Panda" and "Bolt."

The nominees for best original screenplay are "In Bruges," "WALL-E," "Frozen River," "Milk" and "Happy-Go-Lucky."

The nominees for best adapted screenplay are "Slumdog Millionaire," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon," "The Reader" and "Doubt."

The Oscars will be presented February 22 from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre. The broadcast will air on ABC. Hugh Jackman is scheduled to host.

The ObamaMeter

The people who brought us The Truth-O-Meter now offer The ObamaMeter, a reading on the progress Obama is making in keeping the promises he made while on the campaign trail. PolitiFact.com, a Web project of The St. Petersburg Times, will track each and every promise in its database of 510 campaign promises and provide the results, with updates, online.

On Monday, PolitiFact took a look at what it considers the promises most likely to define the Obama presidency:

• No. 15: Create a foreclosure prevention fund for homeowners
Obama proposed a $10 billion foreclosure fund to help struggling homeowners hold onto their homes. Speculators, people who bought vacation homes or people who falsely represented their incomes would not qualify.

• No. 32: Create a tax credit of $500 for workers
Obama's Making Work Pay tax credit that would equal 6.2 percent of up to $8,100 of earnings, yielding a maximum credit of about $500 for most workers. It's included in the economic stimulus bill that Congress is considering; we rated the promise In the Works.

• No. 38: Repeal the Bush tax cuts for higher incomes
Obama said he wants to raise taxes on roughly the top 3 percent of taxpayers in order to help pay for his health care plan. That translates to increases for single people making more than $200,000 or couples making more than $250,000.

• No. 52: Create a National Health Insurance Exchange
This is part of Obama's comprehensive health care reform, which includes many other health promises. Under Obama's plan, the creation of a National Health Insurance Exchange would allow all Americans to select a private plan or enroll in a new public one.

• No. 126: Begin removing combat brigades from Iraq
Obama said he would work with military commanders to bring troops home, with combat troops out in roughly 16 months.

• No. 177: Close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center

Obama said closing the prison created after 9/11 will "send a message to the world that we are serious about our values."

• No. 422: Create new financial regulations
Obama wants "common-sense regulations and rules" to "restore accountability and responsibility in our corporate boardrooms."

• No. 439: Create 5 million "green" jobs
Changing the country's orientation from foreign oil to renewable energy should invigorate the "green" energy sector. That means 5 million jobs, Obama said.

• No. 441: Reduce oil consumption by 35 percent by 2030
The timeframe is long -- more than 20 years -- but Obama hopes his policies will cut U.S. oil consumption by more than a third.

• No. 456: Create cap and trade system with interim goals to reduce global warming
This is a regulatory plan to curb carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. Under the plan, polluters have to pay according to what they emit.

Reliance Q3 net falls 9.8%, beats forecast

Your Ad Here

Mumbai: India’s largest listed company, Reliance Industries Ltd, said its quarterly earnings fell 9.8% from a restated year-ago profit, its first drop in three years, but beat forecasts as refining margin eased less than expected.
“This was one of the most challenging quarters for Reliance with volatility in prices and margins,” chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani said in a statement on Thursday.
“Producers and consumers are coming to terms with slower global trade and economic outlook,” he said.
Reliance, India’s largest petrochemical producer and refiner, is set to get a boost when it starts pumping 30-40 million cubic metres of natural gas a day from its deep-sea fields off country’s east coast in the second half of February.
Another driver would be sales from the newly commissioned 580,000 barrels per day refinery which is run by subsidiary Reliance Petroleum.
Reliance Industries said net profit fell to Rs35.01 billion ($713 million) in its fiscal third quarter ended 31 December from a restated Rs38.82 billion excluding one-off gains a year earlier.
Refining margins, a key measure of profitability, dropped to $10 per barrel from $15.4 a barrel a year ago, against market expectations of $9.16 as sluggish demand in the wake of global economic slowdown pushed oil prices sharply lower.
Reliance’s refining margins are significantly higher than the Asian benchmark in Dubai, as its refinery can process cheaper heavy crude to produce high value products.
Crude oil prices plunged more than $100 from its peak of $147 barrel in July, to $44.60 at the end of December 2008.
Reliance’s retail fuel pumps in the country are shut as it awaits fair competition. Government subsidises state-run oil companies to enable them to sell fuels at heavily discounted, government-set rates but private firms get no such assistance.
Last week, P. Raghavendran, president of the company’s refinery business, said Reliance would reopen its fuel pumps “once we see a reasonable period of stability when we don’t have to shut down again. It depends on when the government comes out with a clear policy and international prices stabilise”.
Ahead of the results, shares in Reliance, which has a market value of around $36 billion, closed up 1.21% at Rs1,132.95 in a Mumbai market that rose 0.4%.
The stock fell 37% in the December quarter, more than a 25% drop in the BSE benchmark Sensex and 33% loss in the sector index.

Tennis-Six degrees of Serena to rival Kevin Bacon fans

Your Ad Here

Serena Williams unwittingly invented a new party game on Thursday at the Australian Open -- the six degrees of Serena.

The object of the game, unlike that with Hollywood actor Kevin Bacon where players have to trace other actors back to Bacon in six steps or fewer, is to work out how many men on the ATP Tour she has beaten, indirectly, courtesy of a victory against Andy Roddick when they were kids.

The nine-times grand slam winner was still proud of defeating Roddick in a one-set practice match when she was 11.

"My greatest match... was when I was younger and I beat Andy Roddick. He'll hate me for saying that," she joked after beating Gisela Dulko 6-3 7-5 in the second round of the Australian Open.

"So indirectly, I've beaten a lot of people on the men's tour."

The 27-year-old Williams said the age difference, she is 11 months older than the men's seventh seed, was not a factor in her victory and the score was still in dispute.

"It doesn't matter. Age doesn't matter," she said smiling.

"There's an argument about the score. I think I beat him like 6-1. He says it was 6-4.

"He always says he's ready for a rematch but there's no need for a rematch."

Jan 21 Virginia Tech murder Haiyang Zhu: Jan 21 Virginia Tech murderer Haiyang Zhu

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — A graduate student from China has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a female student on Virginia Tech's campus, the first killing there since a deadly mass shooting in 2007.

An electronic alert system revamped after the massacre warned students to stay in place while police investigated the incident around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday — about half an hour after the suspect was taken into custody. They were cleared to resume normal activity about an hour later.

The woman, who was also a graduate student but was not identified, was stabbed to death at a cafe in the Graduate Life Center. Police believe she knew the man accused of attacking her, 25-year-old Haiyang Zhu, the school said in a news release. He was charged with first-degree murder and was being held without bond.

It was unclear early Thursday morning where he was being held or whether he had an attorney.

Campus police were called to the scene around 7:06 p.m., and Zhu was taken into custody minutes later, the school said. Responding officers found him and a knife they believe was used at the scene.

Students who live in the building were allowed to come and go, but others were asked to stay away from the area. The hall would re-open later Thursday morning, the school said.

Virginia Tech added text messages and other ways of warning students of possible danger to its system of e-mail alerts after Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people before turning the gun on himself in April 2007.

The revamped alert system was first used last November when an exploded cartridge from a nail gun produced sounds similar to gunfire near a dormitory. During that scare, police searched a residence hall before determining the sounds came from the tool.

For TV’s Newest Crime Fighter, the Lips May Lie, but the Face Tells the Truth

During the past decade, Fox has rarely been the place to go looking for the lessons in collectivism manifest on series like “The Unit” and “Lost” and “Law & Order,” all of which pay tribute to collaborative problem-solving on networks not owned by Rupert Murdoch. Fox doesn’t smell like team spirit. It is a Randian territory of lone saviors (Jack Bauer, John Connor, Gregory House) bushwhacking through impending catastrophe with the weaponry of a singular genius.

The latest addition to the stable is the human polygraph Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth). His gift is determining the criminality of white supremacists, wayward teenagers, Congressional ethics committee chairmen and any and all dubious-seeming Homo sapiens on the basis of shifting body language — “micro-expressions” — which has the effect of turning him into a one-man F.B.I.-municipal police force-Department of Homeland Security on the new series “Lie to Me” (beginning Wednesday).

In addition to his law enforcement efforts, Lightman appears to be a hot ticket on the lecture circuit, where he offers a delicious flashback pageant of public impropriety and heinous misconduct, producing PowerPoint images of Kato Kaelin, O. J. Simpson, Eliot Spitzer, Saddam Hussein, whose sneers and sniggers and pursed lips he has studied like a rabbinical student hunkering down with the Book of Job.

Lightman himself is a fruit basket of stereotype — cocky, infallible, petulant, divorced, burdened by his proficiencies — who has spent decades reading faces and pronouncing certainties: “If your suspect is surprised for more than one second, he is faking it.” The show further embeds the network’s individualist ideologies with a view that suggests private industry can always go the government suits one better. No line item for the Office of Management and Budget, Lightman operates under the auspices of his own consulting firm, the Washington-based Lightman Group, which the feds reluctantly seek out when they are tripped up, presumably by their own inexorable incompetence.

The government minions forced to deal with Lightman on the ground swallow the idea like children forced to take castor oil. “Personally, I think what you do is a joke,” one of them lets him know. But Lightman has his own minions, and thus his own devotees, the people who work for him in his all-white-and-steel, airy-truth-palace of an office. Chief among them is Gillian Foster (Kelli Williams), a behavioral analyst saddled with the task of speaking in earnest exposition and made not to drink Lightman’s Kool-Aid so much as gulp it from the tap.

“Lie to Me” is an invitation to follow her lead, and in some sense it isn’t all that easy to decline the offer. There is an appealing cheekiness to the show’s insistence on dressing up hunch work as the purview of serious science. And there is some legitimacy to the claim: the series is based on the research of Paul Ekman, a professor of psychology at the University of California, San Francisco, who is a specialist in nonverbal communication and what his publishers call deception strategies.

Nancy Drew was pretty good at breaking down deception strategies, too. So was Reese Witherspoon in “Legally Blonde.” Throughout the history of modern popular culture we’ve gone in and out of defining female intelligence in terms of intuitive displays. I’m not sure what it means that television’s reigning intuitionists are now male (Lightman joins the strike force of Adrian Monk and “The Mentalist’s” Patrick Jane). And I’m not sure whether the regendering is a democratizing net positive for feminism or whether we should take offense that women’s intuition translates somewhere along the spectrum of cute while its male counterpart is meant to suggest the power of a mind brilliantly deducing.

Against my better judgment, I suspect I’ll keep watching “Lie to Me” until I figure it out.

Melody the new mixer for brands like Bacardi, Coca Cola

Your Ad Here

From hip hop to reggae, electronic and soul, melody is poised to be the new mixer in advertising as the cash-strapped music business seeks fresh sources of income and artists novel ways to boost careers.

Giant drinks brands Bacardi and Coca Cola both injected some much-needed spirit into the beleaguered music world by separately unveiling plans to collaborate more closely with both up-and-coming and established music groups at the MIDEM music market that closes its doors on Wednesday.

Bacardi, the world's top-selling rum, announced the launch of a new website where music fans can download a mini-album from British big beat duo, Groove Armada, for free and share it with friends.

"Sharing music has always gone on. It's giving music away that's the problem. We wanted to come up with a 21st century version of what we used to do with cassette tapes. When you give away music for free it's disposable. When you share it, it's done with love," one of the London-based duo, Andy Cato, told a press conference.

The duo this time isn't giving away music for free but will be rewarded financially though all parties declined details on the deal.

The band, formed in 1995, has already released five top-10 selling albums and multiple singles, including Grammy-nominated "Superstylin" and "Easy".

Groove Armada's decision earlier last year to split with major record label SonyBMG and join forces with Bacardi highlights the closer relationships that many artists are forging with advertising brands around the world.

With over 90 percent of all music digitally downloaded for free, it is harder than ever for musicians to make a living.

Some, including US singer-songwriter Tom Waits, are more hesitant about getting into bed with brands and refuse to have their music used in adverts. But many musicians attending MIDEM seemed ready to look at new ways of pumping music out to the public and getting paid for it.

And despite the global economic crisis, MIDEM attracted a bumper number of major players this week from advertising, video games and music synchronization, which selects music used in ads, films, TV shows and video games.

The Bacardi mini-album, available via www.bliveshare.com, features four new tracks recorded by Groove Armada with their band, and rewards users who share the tracks with their online social communities such as Facebook, with additional exclusive tracks,

But the service will be available only to fans who fill in an online form confirming they are above the legal drinking age.

Coca Cola also chose MIDEM to premier its brand new upbeat song "Happiness", which will accompany it's new worldwide advertising campaign launched on Tuesday to coincide with the inauguration of US President Barack Obama.

The lyrics, higlighting that "a brand new day has begun", aim to inject new optimism into the world, Coca Cola senior executive Umut Ozaydinli said at MIDEM.

Ozaydinli described the song as a great single from five fantastic musicians who "are not household names yet but I feel as a brand that we might be able to help them to the next level."

The Coca Cola campaign is innovative firstly for choosing relatively unknown musicians to head up a multi-million campaign and secondly, and more importantly for the music industry, for offering the artists a 50/50 share of the tune's success.

The musicians featuring on the new Coca Cola track are all from the US and include hip-hop, funk musician, Cee-Lo Green; urban/alternative singer performer Janelle Monae; "Fall Out Boy" frontman Patrick Stump; and Gym Class Heroes's Matt McGinley.

Manager Jonathon Daniel of Crush Management said the deal was groundbreaking and would put the names of the artists on 20 billion cans of coke.

"I've never seen billions figure in a proposal before so that was what sealed it for me," he commented.

Celebrity Round-up: Ellen DeGeneres and the Aretha Franklin Hat

Everyone had something to say about the hat Aretha Franklin wore during her performance at President Obama's inauguration, but the general consensus is that she did a smashing job on "My Country Tis' of Thee," a.k.a. "America."

Ellen DeGeneres took "the hat thing" one step farther. OMG reports that DeGeneres wore a mock-up on her television show today. Reactions range from laughter to irate fans who think Ellen DeGeneres should not have made fun of any aspect of the Presidential Inauguration.

Yeah, because political events have never been the topic of comedians and talk show hosts before.

It was a joke. Get over it. I'm sure Aretha Franklin isn't losing any sleep over it.

--And it was one bodacious hat.

Celebrity Round-up: Sigourney Weaver Shows Gives a Peek on The View

Has everyone lost their minds today? Sigourney Weaver is being taken to task for a rather revealing shot up her skirt. Of course, TMZ made sure it was brought to the attention of anyone who may have missed the show.

Maybe those of us who think Sigourney Weaver should sit like a lady have our expectations a little to low, and maybe TMZ has their standards a little too low. From what viewers have posted, although it was an awkward moment, nothing could be seen.

To the ladies of "The View" just put her behind the table next time. There are some things the country can't bear to watch. Sigourney's crotch is one of them.

All Eyes on "Lost"

Tonight is the much anticipated season premiere of ABC's "Lost," at 8/7central. The coverage is not quite as frenetic as that for the presidential inauguration, but the fans are about to bust a gut to see the season premiere of "Lost."

The message board at the official website for "Lost" has over 2,000 threads today and over 80,000 people posting and chattering. That's a lot of buzz.

So what will you be watching tonight.

RATEMYCOP.com is a privately-held company based in Los Angeles. The website allows registered users to leave written feedback about their interactions with police officers, and rank the officer's service based on three criteria: Professionalism, Fairness and Satisfaction.

Privately, citizens share stories about their interactions with law enforcement officers every day. The concept of a website where people can share such information was born out of one such conversation.

In September of 2007, RATEMYCOP.com founders decided to create an online forum for citizens to voice both their praise and criticism of policeofficers. Public records request letters were sent to law enforcement agencies across the nation, asking for the names and identifying numbers of the officers who do not require anonymity in their line of work. The letter asked only for the information that would be written on a ticket to identify the issuing officer.

In response, piles of mail flooded in and the lists of officers provided by various agencies were added to a steadily growing database. By the time the website went live on February 28, 2008, over 1000 letters had been sent by RATEMYCOP.com and the company had accumulated over 120,000 names of officers nationwide.

Word of the site spread like wildfire and even before the first feedback was posted, the site founders conducted interviews with several prime time news programs, talk radio shows and newspapers. There was buzz. By week's end, over 50,000 people had visited the site from 40 countries around the globe.RATEMYCOP.com was off and running.

Prior to the launch of RATEMYCOP.com, people had no way to provide feedback about officers who are being paid by tax dollars. It is the hope of the site's founders that citizens and departments alike will use this powerful tool as a way of monitoring police performance. Officers who do their job well will receive the public attention they deserve. So will the dishonorable few who try to hide misconduct behind the power of their badge.

Now you can participate. The next time you have an encounter with a police officer, please feel free to responsibly rate your cop according to the three standards of performance offered on the site. You may also browse the rankings and feedback provided by citizens for officers in departments all over the nation.

'Ann Coulter Smells Like Poop and Sadness'

The DJ's on a Portland, Oregon FM station bantered this term the other night. I believe those words, the title of this story, summarize feelings about Coulter for an awfully large number of people.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Few people inspire a line like that. Disc jocks on Portland, Oregon's KUFO coined the phrase about Coulter. I find it totally ironic that a station named for alien space ships would be so grounded and down to earth in thier thinking.

The thing about Coulter is that she crosses lines that others wouldn't dream of violating. She is a violator of all things in the world that are decent and true.

Her enemies are the poor in general, single moms in particular, gay people, anyone with an agenda resembling kindness, and the families of policemen and firefighters who died on September 11th 2001.

That's a heck of a list. For people like Coulter who live 100% off shock value by feeding the needs of the mean and cruel, conscience isn't part of the deal.

Sassy Smith wrote January 19th 2009, Coulter’s new book Guilty has been causing quite a stir, particularly among single mothers. She also goes after single moms who choose to adopt children (particularly from other countries), including celebrities.

In describing celebrities who adopt children in foreign countries, Coulter wrote, "Apparently, busting up tribal wars to adopt foreign babies has become the latest form of Hollywood autoeroticism."

Coulter alleges that celebrities often adopt children for selfish reasons. A queen of selfish self promotion, she charges that celeb's use their new baby to promote their careers - calling the increasing level of adoptions a "trend" comparable to celebrity sex tapes. She is not trying to change her already established image, and she certainly isn't making any new friends either.

I had a nightmare once; Coulter was a growth that poked its head out of a monster's head like a scene from Alien. Coulter keeps writing books and oozing back into view in the national media, but someday people will no longer talk about her. Coulter may not have a conscience, but Americans do.

Over the past eight years, Bush and Rove and Cheney and Rumsfeld have created an environment where things that were sacred, like our very rights as Americans, were stolen from us.

Along with that this crew robbed our nation of its integrity, and that is not something most of us will easily forgive, along with the needless deaths of so many people.

So in keeping with the shock set, the DJ's on KUFO bantered this term the other night and I hope whoever specifically said it, will let us know in our comment section. I believe those words, the title of this story, summarize feelings about Coulter for a large number of people.

Speaking of Coulter, here is the unaired Saturday Night Live skit with new SNL cast member Michaela Watkins and her take on pundit Ann Coulter for this unaired bit of "Weekend Update."

President Obama retakes oath of office

Your Ad Here

President Barack Obama stood before millions on Tuesday in the traditional inaugural celebration that represents the change of power in Washington, D.C. and became President of the United States. Or did he?

In an effort to keep things on the up-and-up and ensure there was no debate, President Obama retook the oath Wednesday night, after he and Chief Justice John Roberts flubbed it earlier.

"We believe the oath of office was administered effectively and that the President was sworn in appropriately [Tuesday]," White House counsel Greg Craig said in a statement.

"Yet, the oath appears in the Constitution itself," he added. "And out of the abundance of caution, because there was one word out of sequence, Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath a second time."

And that's exactly what happened at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday night in the White House's Map Room. When Roberts asked if Obama - who took this second oath sans Bible - was ready, the President reportedly replied: "I am, and we're going to do it very slowly."

The word in question was "faithfully," which was misplaced by Roberts after Obama interrupted him during Tuesday's ceremony.

The Constitution is clear about the exact wording of the oath and as a result, some constitutional experts have said that a do-over probably wasn't necessary.

Kim Novak was never sexier than she was playing modern-day witch Gillian Holroyd in the charming 1958 film version of John Van Druten’s hit Broadway comedy/fantasy “Bell Book and Candle.” And Manhattan at Christmastime never looked more gorgeous than it did in this movie thanks to James Wong Howe’s stunning Technicolor cinematography.

The plot gets underway when Gillian sets her sights on Shepherd Henderson (James Stewart), the bachelor publisher who just moved into her apartment building. When she learns that he is engaged to socialite Merle Kittridge (Janice Rule at her most neurotic), a bitchy nemesis from her college days, Gillian decides that she would be doing Shep a favor by snagging him for herself via a love spell.

Directed by the underrated Richard Quine, “Bell Book and Candle” features a superlative supporting cast that includes Else Lanchester as Gillian’s eccentric Aunt Queenie, Jack Lemmon as Gillian’s mischievous warlock brother Nicky and Ernie Kovaks as alcoholic best-selling writer Sidney Redlitch. (Before Lemmon met Walter Matthau, he and Kovaks were a frequent screen team.)

Despite the crushingly pro-conformity ending (Shep can't accept Gillian’s love until she becomes a “normal” woman), “Bell Book and Candle” still remains one of the best Hollywood romantic comedies of the 1950s.

Lie to Me - An early look

If there's one thing we know about the American television landscape, it's that there just aren't enough procedurals on the air. And while CBS has managed to snatch most of them up before anyone else can get their hands on one, it looks like FOX managed to sneak one by the almighty Eye. And as with most crime dramas of this sort, it must differentiate itself from the others by having a little twist all its own. Lie to Me offers that twist in the form of Tim Roth's character, Cal Lightman, who is essentially a human lie detector.

Loosely based on the findings of author and professor of psychology Paul Ekman, FOX was kind enough to send along Ekman's book, Telling Lies, with the pilot so I could follow along and see which of his strategies were used on the show. Yeah, I didn't do that.

There may not be a person alive who's analyzed the art of lying and the liar more than Ekman, so certainly the show is in capable hands with him involved. FOX may just have a successful formula established here and could have another House-sized hit on their hands. Find out for yourself when the pilot drops tonight (1/21/09) at 9/8 Central.

I loved the recruitment technique Lightman used to bring Ria Torres (Monica Raymund) into the fold; pretending to be suspicious at the airport to get her to pull him from the line. Her introduction to Eli Loker, also a part of the team and, apparently, someone who always speaks the truth, was fairly entertaining. I wonder if this is some sort of medical condition or a lifestyle choice that he's actually able to maintain. It's nice to know that he's "fair" in bed, I guess, and that he does, in fact, have a chance with Torres in the sack. Every show needs some sexual tension among the core cast.

Both the A and B stories were intriguing, and both had twists and turns to keep them from following cliche paths. Now I say that as someone who doesn't watch all of these procedurals regularly, so it's quite possible both of these plotlines have been covered extensively on Law & Numb3rs: Without a Criminal NCSI Mentalist.

The A-plot focused on a murdered teacher and the web of lies protecting a high school principal who'd impregnated one of his students in an affair. Believe me, we were nowhere near this when the episode began, so it was an impressive maneuver to get there. The B-plot was just as delightfully unexpected as we went from a congressman having sex with a prostitute to a man trying to reconnect with his daughter and turn her from such a dark and shameful profession. In the end, Lightman even lied to the client (the DNC) to protect the congressman's daughter, allowing him to resign in potential disgrace.

It's not my fault I found myself paying such close attention to the little details during the show. They made me do it. But here's what I noticed:

* Tim Roth wears glasses normally, or at least while on the set between takes because he had a visible glasses line on the right side of his face coming forward from his ear.
* Lechero (Robert Wisdom) survived his time in SONA and now he works as a guard at another prison. Cosmic karma maybe?
* I think the actors are overly aware of their facial expressions on this show, considering its nature, and are therefore overdoing it slightly.
* The famous photos and video footage of various people matching expressions tied to lies and emotional responses are a nice touch. It helps to resonate truth with the lying philosophy the show is supporting.
* "Are you going to try and have sex with my daughter tonight?" It must be nice to be able to read faces so well that you can just throw the question out there and you'll get the truth, no matter what they say.
* It was a nice moment at the end when Cal turned to confront the poor woman who was seeing the married guy after he lied to her about leaving his wife for her. Sometimes you just can't let it go.

It kind of brings up an interesting point that may be addressed in future installments. The notion that Cal is always in "lie detector mode" could prove problematic for his personal life. It may be a major factor in his own failed marriage and could be interesting to see him trying to turn it off. I could imagine plenty of times, for example, where you wouldn't want to know that someone was lying to you if you asked them: "Was that good for you?"

I think this is a solid entry in the world of crime television. I'm not the kind of person who can really watch more than two to three episodes of any of these variations, but considering the ratings map, I'm in the minority on that. Therefore, I can say with confidence that Lie to Me deserves a place in the land of success for being very good at what it does. It's smart and slickly produced with intriguing characters. And it's always fun to catch people in lies.

virginia Tech student fatally stabbed; suspect caught

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — A female student was stabbed to death Wednesday night on Virginia Tech's campus, the first killing at the school since a deadly mass shooting there in 2007.

The killing triggered a crisis notification system that was revamped after the shooting rampage, beaming an electronic warning around 7:45 p.m. that students should stay in place while police investigated. Students were told about an hour later they could resume normal activity.

A male suspect was taken into custody around 7:10 p.m., according to a university news release. Campus police responding to an emergency call found the man and a knife they believe was used at the scene, a cafe in the Graduate Life Center.

Both the victim and the suspect are graduate students at Virginia Tech, and police believe they knew each other, the school said.

Further details weren't immediately released, and university officials didn't immediately return a phone message left seeking comment.

Virginia Tech added text messages and other ways of warning students of possible danger to its system of e-mail alerts after gunman Seung-Hui Cho took 32 lives before turning the gun on himself in an April 2007 rampage.

The revamped alert system was first used last November when an exploded cartridge from a nail gun produced sounds similar to gunfire near a dormitory. During that scare, police searched a residence hall before determining the sounds came from the tool.

Wheat, rice futures ban to continue : Sharad Pawar

NEW DELHI : Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on Wednesday said the government will not lift a ban on futures trading in rice and wheat and will continue duty-free imports of crude palm oil.

Speaking to reporters here he said "There is no plan to allow futures in wheat and rice”.

Earlier, the government scrapped an export tax on basmati rice and lowered the floor price for overseas sales, the latest in a series of cautious moves to ease controls imposed in the last two years amid fears of shortages and inflation.

With forecasts for bumper harvests of winter-sown crops and prices falling, some trade officials had seen the government allowing resumption in futures trading in the two grains, halted two years ago amid criticism it was fanning prices.

High food and crude oil prices pushed India's wholesale price index, its most commonly watched price barometer, to a touch under 13 percent in early August, but it has more than halved since then and economists expect it to fall to 1-2 percent by March.

India recently slapped a 20-percent import tax on crude soyoil, continuing to allow duty-free imports of crude palm oil.

India, the world's biggest vegetable oil buyer after China, imports almost half of its annual vegetable oil consumption of about 11 million tonnes.

The country buys palm oil from Malaysia and Indonesia and soyoil from Brazil and Argentina.
