Buddy Holly Remembered 50 Years After His Death

On February 3, 1959, a small plane crashed in a corn field in Iowa, killing three rock and roll stars - Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson, known as "The Big Bopper".

The 50th anniversary of that tragic event is being observed by rock fans around the world, but especially in Clear Lake, Iowa - the scene of their last performance, where a large concert is planned, and in Buddy Holly's hometown of Lubbock, Texas.

Charles Hardin Holly, known to his family and friends as Buddy, was only 22 years old when he died, but he had by that time created a guitar-driven rock and roll style that would live on among rock bands around the world.

In only a few years, the Lubbock native created hit songs that are still played today - classics like "That'll be the Day," inspired by a line John Wayne spoke in the western movie "The Searchers".

Holly rocked his fans with songs like "Peggy Sue" and "Maybe Baby" and then soothed them with ballads like "Everyday".

The song marked the first use in pop music of a celesta - an instrument mainly associated with classical music performances.

Fans say Holly's music still relevant

Holly's style and musical experimentation appealed to many up-and-coming musicians, especially in Britain, where he has many fans even among people born long after his death.

Among the British visitors to Lubbock for the 50th anniversary of Holly's death are Phil and Caroline Jenkins.

"The Beatles and the Rolling Stones - they all credit Buddy as being a major influence," Jenkins said. "It seems that you get more in England than you do here. He is bigger there than he is here. You know, he is bigger there than he is here. Lots of people here we talk to go, 'Who?' They don't know the name."

Jessica Camacho helps run the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock, which is holding panel discussions and special events to commemorate Holly's death.

Camacho is only 26 years old, but she says she recognizes the importance of Holly - not only to her hometown, but also to the world of music.

"I don't know how many younger people realize what kind of influence Buddy Holly had even on the music that they hear today that they love. I think his influence was far reaching," Camacho said.

Friend says Holly strove for recognition

There are still many people living here in Lubbock who knew Buddy Holly well. Among them is former musician and disc jockey Jack Neal, who was Buddy Holly's first musical partner on a local radio show. He sat in on jam sessions with Holly and a young rock singer from Memphis, Tennessee named Elvis Presley, just months before Elvis went on to become a legend himself.

"I truly believe that if Buddy had still been living, he would have been as big as Elvis, if not bigger, because of the two different styles of people that they were," Neal said.

Neal knew Buddy Holly as a close friend as well as an artist, and he misses him still. He recalls one of his last conversations with him, not long before he died.

"He was in town and we were at one of the drive-ins and it was just before he left to go on that last tour and he said he wanted people to know Buddy Holly," Neal recalled. "He wanted them to know the name. He said the money was nice, but he wanted people to know the name. And so that was his goal and that is exactly what he did."

The fatal plane crash in Iowa was commemorated in 1973 by singer/songwriter Don McLean in his hit song, "American Pie," which spoke of "the day the music died." But most Buddy Holly fans say his music never died and that it lives on in the rock and roll he helped create.

The 'Day the Music Died' didn't kill music - it lived and grew bigger

Your Ad Here

The music didn't really die on Feb. 3, 1959, the day a four-seat airplane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson) crashed into a cornfield eight miles north of Clear Lake, Iowa.

Five years and six days later, the Beatles, who learned their craft from Buddy Holly records and whose name is a shoutout to Holly's Crickets, played the Ed Sullivan show.

No, the music lived. It just got bigger than anyone in 1959 could have imagined.

Still, that plane crash deeply affected a rock 'n' roll world that in 1959 was still in early adolescence.

The term "rock 'n' roll" itself had only come into widespread use about three years earlier, though it had floated around the blues world at least since the 1920s as a thinly camouflaged synonym for fun under the sheets. When you're young, you don't think about death.

Feb. 3, 2009 is the 50th anniversary of the day musicians Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash.

Before Feb. 3, 1959, rock 'n' roll's idea of a loss was Elvis Presley going into the Army or Little Richard announcing he was going to sing only for he Lord. John Lennon later would remarks that rock 'n' roll died when Elvis went into the Army.

On this one, John was wrong. There's a widespread popular myth that after Elvis' induction and the Buddy Holly plane crash, the enemies of rock 'n' roll smashed it into harmless little pieces. By this myth, traditionalists in the music, entertainment and radio games got together and conspired to replace the wild, raw power of Elvis, Buddy and Little Richard with the harmless likes of Fabian and Frankie Avalon, pretty boys with minimal talent.

Thus yanking the teeth and the bite out of this dangerous, subversive intruder. Without question there were traditionalists who wanted to see that happen, and even many fans believed rock 'n' roll was another fad, like goldfish swallowing, whose inevitable expiration date was coming up fast.

They too were wrong. The music and the seeds it planted in those 1958-1964 years, between Elvis and the Beatles, will stand with any six years in rock 'n' roll history. Motown started then, with artists like Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and the Temptations.

That was Roy Orbison's peak. You had the Beach Boys and the Four Seasons at their best. Phil Spector was producing, Stax and Muscle Shoals were gearing up. The Shirelles were singing. So were Del Shannon and Arthur Alexander and James Brown and Gene Pitney.

Small companies produced hundreds of great singles, from Maxine Brown's "All In My Mind" to Kathy Young's "A Thousand Stars" to the Capris' classic "There's a Moon Out Tonight" and the Edsels' immortal "Rama-Lama-Ding-Dong."

Ex-Detroit mayor freed from jail after 99-day stay

Your Ad Here

DETROIT — Kwame Kilpatrick regained his freedom early this morning, emerging from jail after a 99-day sentence and stepping back onto the cold, dark streets of the city he once ruled as mayor.

The 38-year-old Kilpatrick, about 25 pounds lighter than when he entered jail at the end of October, left the downtown Detroit facility wearing a dark suit just after 12:30 a.m.

Before leaving the building, Kilpatrick stood for several minutes in the jail lobby, consulting with lawyers and friends on the other side of the glass front doors.

As he stepped onto the sidewalk, Kilpatrick stood for a long moment amid bright television camera lights, a crush of awaiting reporters and swirling snowflakes, smiling occasionally to those in the crowd who called his name and shouted: “We love you, Kwame. Detroit loves you, baby!”

Flanked by a number of men, several dressed in fedoras and long coats, Kilpatrick then was rushed to a waiting blue Chevrolet Suburban. The Democrat waved from behind tinted windows as he was whisked away as part of a multi-vehicle caravan.

Kilpatrick made no statements to the media during his release, upon the orders of new defense attorney Willie E. Gary.

“He’s not bitter. He said he learned a lot,” Gary said a short time later during an impromptu sidewalk news conference. “He said this has been an experience he’ll never forget, and he thinks because of it he’ll be a better person. Right now, he’s just concerned about getting home to his mom, his sister, and of course his other family.

“The former mayor ... he wishes the city well, all the people of Detroit well and that there are no hard feelings one way or the other.”

It’s been more than a year since a text-messaging sex scandal first reported by the Detroit Free Press started the long process that ended in Kilpatrick’s disgraceful arrest, plea, jailing and release. Now, the man who quickly rose from a state representative to mayor of a city of 900,000 people simply is looking for work.

Kilpatrick was expected to meet with state probation officials before heading to a job interview Wednesday with an unnamed company at an undisclosed location in Texas. His wife, Carlita, and three young sons, already have left Michigan.

A judge has ordered that he return by Feb. 9.

“The job prospect is very, very, very favorable,” Gary told reporters. “We want to make sure he can get, and land, the job. That’s his first thing. He wants a job. That’s what he is concerned about now. He wants to get with his family, get with his kids so he can start his life again.”

The next five years, though, will be spent on probation and paying off the bulk of $1 million in restitution to the city. He also has had his law license revoked.

If Kilpatrick lands the job in Texas, he must first get permission to transfer his probation from Michigan to that state.

Kilpatrick was into the middle of his second term as mayor when sexually explicit text messages with his then-Chief of Staff Christine Beatty were published by the Free Press.

The messages from Beatty’s city-issued pager also contradicted testimony that she and the married mayor gave during a 2007 whistle-blowers’ trial when they denied having a romantic relationship. The messages also indicated they lied about their roles in the firing of a police official.

The cash-strapped city, now facing a deficit believed to be more than $200 million, eventually settled the civil suit with three former officers for $8.4 million.

Kilpatrick and Beatty were charged last March with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice.

Before his trial on those charges was to begin, Kilpatrick pleaded guilty in September to obstruction of justice and no contest to assault for allegedly shoving a detective who was trying to serve a subpoena in the text-message case.

He stepped down as mayor on Sept. 18. Beatty, who resigned last February, was sentenced early last month to 120 days in jail after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice.

But Kilpatrick’s long and bitter battles in local courts may not be over.

His lawyers will be looking at the legal machinations that led to his jailing, said Gary, who added that no decision has been made on whether to file any civil suits.

“It is one thing to convict someone, but it is another thing to do it in a way where they are not getting the same justice as anyone else would get; nothing more, nothing less,” Gary said.

“That’s why we’re here to make sure that was done, and if it wasn’t done, then we’ll have to deal with it at that time.”

Police evacuate Miramar High School after bomb threat

Miramar High School was evacuated Wednesday morning after someone called 911 and reported a bomb threat, police said.

The call came in about 7:25 a.m., prompting police to evacuate students and employees out the east side of the school at 3601 SW 89th Ave.

The evacuation was a precaution, police spokeswoman Detective Yessenia Diaz said.

Police were still searching for a bomb as of 8 a.m., Diaz said.

The scare prompted police to close Douglas Road between Miramar Parkway and the Miami-Dade County line.

Christian Bale gets all Gotham on 'Terminator' cinematographer

Your Ad Here

Have you heard the scorching on-the-set rant by Christian Bale, who was clearly furious at Shane Hurlbut, the director of photography for "Terminator Salvation"? Clearly, somebody in the film's audio department decided that the famously severe actor's tantrum should be heard by the world ... which is why it landed not long ago over at TMZ.

And ... wow, he's mad.

You can hear it right here but, please, don't go there if you are offended by coarse language or if you are a big fan of Bale and don't want your affections shaken.

Why the vicious tantrum? Essentially, Hurlbut (who worked with "Terminator Salvation" director McG on "We Are Marshall") walked across Bale's sight-line during a scene. That's a huge no-no and anybody with Hurlbut's two decades of experience on movie sets is well aware of that.

"If you do it one more time I ain't walking on this set if you're still hired!" Bale barks at Hurlbut at one point during the three-minute snippet (the besieged cinematographer can't be heard during the barrage -- clearly the audio is all from the microphone on or near Bale).

I'm not sure anyone will be surprised by the eruption, except perhaps by its duration. Bale is known as a serious actor and a serious guy (did you see what he did to himself for "The Machinist"?) and his temper has been an issue before, at least if you believe his mother and sister and their account of his behavior last year. (I've never met the guy; I have talked to him on the phone but it was a brief interview and not very revealing, but I'm a big fan of his work, especially in "Harsh Times," "The Prestige" and "3:10 to Yuma.")

There's a lot of pressure in making a major blockbuster and any project as dark and intense as "Salvation" can take the cast into some pretty edgy places. Still, it's hard to listen to this rant and think of the guy as a healthy, mature adult. The bottom line? Bale certainly won't win any friends in the industry by savagely insulting a professional in front of a crowd. But it's just as certain that as long as Bale remains the famous face on all the movie posters, people will put up with the abuse.

Heroes Review: "Clear and Present Danger" (Volume 4, Episode 1)

Your Ad Here

While America continues to cheer on Jack Bauer as he does whatever is necessary to keep the country safe from terrorists over on Fox, Sen. Nathan Petrelli (Adrian Pasdar) takes things into his own hands on NBC. Except while Jack's excesses are in the name of fighting those who are planning great evils, Nathan's are of a more... preemptive variety.
The lines are redrawn for the 42nd time in the season opener with captains Nathan and his daughter Claire (Hayden Panettiere) picking the teams this go round. Nathan has the help of Claire's other horn-rimmed dad, plus grandma, Danko the Hunter and the full force of the United States Government. Mohinder might have joined Team Facism if not for the fact that they captured, drugged and blindfolded him. Claire gets Peter, Tracy, Ando, Hiro, Matt, Daphne and—though she'll be devasted to hear it—Sylar.

Nathan has always been something of a tool, so his quest to rid the world of his fellow evolved humans is believable, but as the heroes quietly settle into normal lives, Noah must have just decided that he was tired of having to fight bad superheroes and that if it took eradicating the good ones to put the threat of villains for good, then so be it. What neither of her two dads counted on was the meddling cheerleader Claire ditching college to foil their schemes. Curses.

In addition to getting her G.E.D., Claire must have been secretly going to the school of kicking ass as she disables her driver with a swift kick to the back of the head, climbs up through the cargo plane's landing gear, frees her fellow heroes and goes commando on the military guards. But Peter accidently absorbs Tracy's superfreeze and splits open the fuselage, sending the plane earthward. I'm pretty sure either Nicolas Cage or Harrison Ford were hiding under one of those black cloth bags. Regardless, a much less complex stage has been set for "Volume 4: Fugitives." The show has suffered some critical beatings for forcing its moral twists and turns in less-than-believable ways. Let's just hope creator Tim Kring hasn't swung the pendulum too far in favor of clear-cut good vs. evil. Even the best comic-book heroes fight some of their battles internally.

its a mad mad mad mad world

Your Ad Here

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is a 1963 American comedy film directed by Stanley Kramer about the madcap pursuit of $350,000 of stolen cash by a diverse and colorful group of strangers. The ensemble comedy premiered on November 7, 1963.

The film begins as the occupants of four vehicles on a lonely highway in the Southern California desert stop to help bank robber "Smiler" Grogan (Jimmy Durante in his last screen appearance), who has just careened off the highway in a spectacular crash ("He just went sailing right out there")

With his dying breaths, Grogan tells the bystanders, comedy writer Dingy "Ding" Bell (Mickey Rooney), his writing partner Benjy Benjamin (Buddy Hackett), moving van driver Lennie Pike (Jonathan Winters), dentist Melville Crump (Sid Caesar), and edible seaweed company owner J. Russell Finch (Milton Berle) about "three hundred and fifty G's" ($350,000) hidden in the fictitious city of Santa Rosita, less than a day's drive away, under a mysterious "big W”. Grogan then dies, literally kicking a bucket. The witnesses immediately begin arguing over how to divide the money, sparking a wild race. Each carload of characters races to be first to Santa Rosita and find the money. Many others, including Lt. Col. J. Algernon Hawthorne, a cactus-collecting British army officer played by Terry-Thomas; and Otto Meyer, a sneaky con man played by Phil Silvers, join the race as it progresses.

Berle's character, J. Russell Finch, is recovering from a nervous breakdown. He continually pops pills for his nerves throughout the film. His mother-in-law, Mrs. Marcus (Ethel Merman), is loud, overbearing, and opportunistic. Mrs. Marcus, after arguing with Finch, phones for help to her son Sylvester (Dick Shawn), a beatnik lifeguard, who is introduced in a wild frenzied dance sequence with his girlfriend (Barrie Chase) to "31 Flavors" (recalling the 1953 Baskin-Robbins slogan), sung by the Shirelles. The stranded Finches are kindly given a ride in the passing Hawthorne's jeep. After quarreling with Hawthorne over a minor issue, Mrs. Marcus gets out of the jeep and spitefully drops Hawthorne's key ring down her bosom. After an offer of help by a passing driver (Jack Benny), Finch and Hawthorne turn her upside down and shake her to dislodge the keys. Later Mrs. Marcus beats Hawthorne over the head with her purse while he is driving.

Unbeknownst to the treasure hunters, Captain Culpepper (Spencer Tracy) of the Santa Rosita Police has been working on the Smiler Grogan case for years. He suspects the various people who heard Grogan's last words may know where the money is hidden, and he has their progress tracked by various police units, including helicopters.

Quickly finding a small airport, Bell and Benjamin frantically enlist the aid of Tyler Fitzgerald (Jim Backus), a wealthy pilot who is hungover and lying on a pool table. He unfortunately has a penchant for drink, even while flying. Meanwhile, Dr. Crump and his wife Monica (Edie Adams) charter a Curtiss JN-4D "Jenny" World War I-era biplane which almost falls apart in mid-flight. During Bell & Benjamin's flight, Fitzgerald continues to drink and, while mixing his own Old Fashioned, is accidentally knocked out when Benjamin, whom Fitzgerald coerces behind the the controls, has difficulty controlling the aircraft. Eventually they make contact with the Rancho Conejo airport control tower located near Santa Rosita. The tower controllers (Carl Reiner and Jesse White) decide to enlist the prowess of local pilot Colonel Wilberforce (Paul Ford) to "talk them down". It does not go well. Bell and Benjamin, while trying to land, crash into a plate glass window of an airport restaurant filled with diners, while the frantic Colonel Wilberforce, trying just a bit too hard to talk them down, falls out of his tower, dangling by his microphone cord. The Crumps ultimately get locked in a hardware store basement once they arrive in Santa Rosita, eventually freeing themselves with dynamite which they find there. Peter Falk and Eddie Anderson (who played Rochester on Jack Benny's radio and TV shows) appear as Santa Rosita Yellow Cab drivers.

Otto Meyer stops to pick up the bicycling Lennie Pike (whose van had broken down), but when the dim-witted van driver reveals to Meyer all he knows about the treasure, Meyer tricks Pike into getting out of his car. The clever Meyer leaves Pike on the roadside while speeding off to get the money for himself (Winters' facial expressions provide the bulk of the humor in his role, especially during this sequence). Pike later catches up with Meyer at a newly opened service station owned by two nerdy attendants, Irwin (Marvin Kaplan) and Ray (Arnold Stang), and tries to attack Meyer. Ray knocks Pike out with a bottle of oil and the two station owners tie him up with duct tape as Meyer escapes. Pike awakens, breaks out of the duct tape, goes on a rampage that destroys the station, and steals a Dodge Power Wagon tow truck.

Culpepper is anticipating a nice vacation since the Smiler Grogan case, which he has worked for 15 years, will be solved once the travelers find the hidden cash. He continues to monitor their progress as reports filter in from various police units. He starts to get ideas of his own about what should happen to all that money, however, spurred on by his imminent retirement and the low pension for his job.

Leaving a trail of destruction in their wake, all the main characters eventually converge on Santa Rosita State Park. Culpepper hurries to intercept them, telling his officers to back off and let him handle the situation. The money is soon dug up under the "Big W," a group of four palm trees planted diagonally to resemble the letter. Culpepper quietly approaches (after they finish arguing about how the money will be divided) and requests that they turn themselves in. Obviously, the authorities will be more lenient if they go voluntarily. Everyone piles into two taxicabs and heads for police headquarters, while Culpepper makes a break for it with the money. Ironically, just as this happens, Culpepper's Chief, Aloysius (William Demarest) blackmails the mayor into trebling Culpepper's pension.

Culpepper has decided to flee to nearby Mexico (strongly hinted as he looks at a map of California and the camera focuses on a strip on the bottom labeled "Mexico" as instrumental Mexican music plays softly on the soundtrack). His plan is in place, including a fast boat to deliver him south. But the treasure-seekers realize that Culpepper has turned the opposite way out of the State Park, so they pursue him. Culpepper, driving his police-issue Dodge, is chased by the treasure-seekers and his scheme unravels. The pursuit is a great car chase on highways and through town resulting in the eventual destruction of all three vehicles at an old building in downtown Santa Rosita that is about to be torn down. Upon hearing of the chase, and failure to contact Culpepper, Aloysius realizes that Culpepper has become a criminal, and sadly orders that he be arrested.

In a madcap conclusion, all the men pursue Culpepper into the derelict building, chasing him to the top floor, and are tossed off a rescue ladder, and the suitcase filled with cash spills open. The money flutters down to the crowd on the street below, and the male treasure hunters wind up in the hospital. The film ends as Culpepper and the other men are moaning and bandaged in traction, lamenting the loss of the money and facing punishment. Culpepper, in visible disgust, remarks in dark sarcasm: "The only reason that you ten idiots will very likely get off lightly is because the judge will have me up there to throw the book at!" Culpepper mentions a litany of troubles before him, including a divorce and his pension being revoked, doubting that he will laugh about anything ever again. Benjy Benjamin, who is eating a banana, then tosses the peel on the floor in disgust. The women from the story, dressed in hospital uniforms (for unknown reasons), enter the hospital room. Loud-mouthed Mrs. Marcus, in the midst of another bombastic tirade, slips on the banana peel and falls hard on her rear end. All the men burst into hysterical laughter as she is taken away by orderlies. A smile slowly comes to Culpepper's face, and he finally joins in the laughter.

With an exotic, sultry beauty, and a maddeningly magnetic personality, Leilene’s “look” is immediately identifiable to millions of people across North America – a byproduct of her nonstop appearances on reality TV shows, feature films, music videos, cable programs, and magazine covers. You might not know her name… but just about every red-blooded American male age 16 – 35 most assuredly has seen her face.

She first exploded as a magazine superstar, gracing the pages of FHM, a host of Playboy titles, Entertainment Weekly, TV Guide, Fit Models International, and countless others. She then became fantasy-fodder for an entire generation of American adolescents as a music video femme fatale, where she gyrated in heavy MTV rotation with the likes of Janet Jackson, Naughty by Nature, Jermaine Dupri, Snoop Dogg, and more.

Soon, Hollywood beckoned. Typecast as “the hot babe”, Leilene appeared in such films as: Detroit Rock City, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, National Lampoon’s Strip Poker (Fall, 2006), and almost blew basketball legend Dennis Rodman’s fragile mind to shreds in the made-for-TV biopic Bad As I Wanna Be.

Making the leap from the silver screen to the small screen, Leilene then appeared on cable TV’s top-rated program, WWE’s Monday Night Raw on the USA Network in summer of 2005 as a wrestling “diva”. Her segments with sports-entertainment legends Jerry “The King” Lawler and Sergeant Slaughter ranked in the Nielsen’s as the most-viewed on the entire Raw telecast, reaching over 4.6 million people. After leaving the WWE, she was quickly signed by the WWE’s chief rival, TNA, and appeared on TNA Pay-Per-Views and their flagship cable program TNA iMPACT! on Spike TV in 2006.

VH1, looking to launch their “Celebreality” lineup, immediately signed Leilene to star in their Bachelor parody, Flavor of Love, with hip-hop superstar Flavor Flav as the man looking for romance. Going by the moniker “Smiley”, Leilene appeared in seven of the show’s 10 episodes. Her exit from the program ranks among the most memorable in reality TV history when Flavor Flav admitted to falling in love with her, but cited Leilene’s feelings for her not-yet-divorced husband as an obstacle too great to overcome. Flavor of Love shocked the critics to become the most viewed program in VH1 history, drawing six-million spectators for just a single episode.

Synopsis: Leilene’s remarkable body of work – not to mention her remarkably decadent body! – renders her an ideal candidate to reach that ever-elusive "young male" demographic. From FHM to Playboy; from professional wrestling to professional poker; from music videos to reality TV; this young spectacular model has specifically targeted the programs and cultural phenomenons of Generations X and Y – and in doing so, became one of the most searched ladies on the entire World Wide Web. If you’re interested in including Leilene in your next project, please contact her management team at mirabellemodels@yahoo.com

Phish and Springsteen Set to Headline Bonnaroo 2009

Your Ad Here

As Rolling Stone first predicted in December 2008, Phish will headline two nights at this year’s Bonnaroo Music Festival, with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band also topping the bill. While the two marquee acts don’t really come as a surprise following months of rumors and speculation, the talent underneath the headliners is sure to drop some jaws: The Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, Wilco, Snoop Dogg, David Byrne, Al Green, TV on the Radio and many more will be on hand at the Manchester, Tennessee festival on June 11-14th. Tickets go on sale February 7th, and are being offered in a recession-happy plan that includes five $50 payments.

Need more incentive to attend? How about Animal Collective, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Elvis Costello, MGMT, Girl Talk, the Mars Volta, Jenny Lewis, Santogold, Merle Haggard and more as 120 bands and over 20 comedians will perform at the 2009 festival. For Phish fans, this festival provides an opportunity to get some tickets after the Live Nation ticket troubles from last weekend. The addition of Phish also represents the ‘Roo reconnecting with its more jam-band-oriented past after a few years that saw bands like Tool and Metallica serve as headliners. Other jam-friendly acts on the bill include moe., Gov’t Mule and the Del McCoury Band. Bonnaroo organizers promise to add more acts in the coming weeks.

Of course, Rock Daily will be all over Bonnaroo this summer, giving you reports from the frontlines and front rows. While we pack up the Winnebago, check out the full list of announced artists below:

Miley Cyrus Biography

Miley Cyrus Biography

Miley Cyrus (real name Destiny Hope Cyrus) was born in 1992, in Tennessee. She earned the nickname “Miley” as she was constantly smiling as a child.

Biography and Career:

Her parents, Billy Ray and Leticia, were related to Hollywood. Thus, little Miley was always fond of acting. Her debut TV appearance was in the father’s TV show Doc. After that, she also starred in movies like Big Fish.

After a tough and long audition, she was selected to act in the lead role in Hannah Montana on Disney Channel in 2006. There she played a double role as a teenage pop star, still in high school. The show scored enormous success and turned the young girl into a star very soon.

The songs of the show also became popular with the fans and there was a huge demand for CDs of those tracks. Resp
onding to this stipulation, she set out on a live tour, which in turn produced huge publicity.

In the meantime she appeared on the magazine Vanity Fair. Though most of the photos, by photographer Annie Leibovitz, were satisfying, a few of them showed an overexposed Miley Cyrus. With that she received mixed response from the critic world; the debate giving the young star further media hype.

With starring for the third season in Hannah Montana, she also gave voice to the lead character in Pixar’s Bolt. The movie release of Hannah Montana is also due in 2009. Apart from these, Miley has been given million dollars for writing an autobiography and Portfolio magazine has said Miley Cyrus “will be worth over $1 billion by the time she is 18”.

Why is she famous?

Miley Cyrus is famous for acting in the lead role for the superhit Disney Channel TV show Hannah Montana. She is also the daughter of country musician Billy Ray Cyrus.

Here is one of her famous quotes:

"I think you have to decide the kind of person that you really want to be, and for me, it's just a sweet girl."

Miley Cyrus Sings, Dances And Even Raps! Backstage At ‘Miley-Sized Surprise’

Your Ad Here

LOS ANGELES — The “Miley-Sized Surprise” New Year’s eve show is officially wrapped — and it was spectacular! Right now, it’s Wednesday night and I’m in a car on my way to LAX to catch the red-eye flight back to NYC in time to host the “Engaged and Underaged: The Bridal Bowl Special” special for MTV. I had a lot of fun today with Miley Cyrus, the kids of Beckman High School in Irvine, California, and of course the real star of the show: Alison Kaprielian. The entire show was centered around Alison, whose mother was sadly diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. As well as juggling her school work, her social life and supporting her mother through her treatment, Alison volunteered for the Pink Ribbon Club, an organization targeted at teens that raises money for and spreads awareness of the fight against breast cancer. Alison also happens to be one of the biggest Miley fans ever, so when Miley turned up at her house unexpectedly this morning for an intimate and impromptu performance in her kitchen — Alison was overwhelmed, to say the least!

It didn’t stop there. Miley surprised Alison throughout the day with makeovers for her and her mother, and recorded one of those famous YouTube videos with her and Miley’s best friend Mandy Jiroux. We also flew in Alison’s best friend from Georgia, threw a monster surprise party in Alison’s honor and invited the entire high school for the huge Miley performance that closed out the night. And Pepsi made a big donation to the Pink Ribbon Club. It was really an amazing night — Alison and her family were so grateful.

As for Miley, she is without doubt one of the biggest sensations of the past decade, and it’s easy to see why: She’s an amazing character. She’s like a ball of energy who’s always singing or dancing or joking around. She was definitely having a lot of fun on the show, and it was kind of infectious. She’s a lot of fun to be around and undoubtedly one of my favorite co-hosts ever: I’m officially a fan of the girl’s swagger! She’s a mean keyboard player as well, and believe it or not, she’s even experimenting a little bit with hip-hop. Nothing serious — just a bit of fun, but don’t say I didn’t warn you if you see Miley doing the rap thing in the future. And I’ve got to say, her song “See You Again” is bloody great!

So that’s New Year’s Eve in L.A. wrapped. The show was a big success — but no time to celebrate. I’m at the airport now, got to catch my flight and head to good old New York. The clock will hit midnight while I’m in the air. I’ve never been on a plane on New Year’s Eve before, but I guess it’ll be a new experience. Going to try and catch some sleep while I can — I’ve got a show to host tomorrow! Wish me luck — and happy new year!

How do you get better management buy-in (promise cheaper or faster docs?

Your Ad Here

Management buy-in is key to any team within an organisation. If the management don’t properly understand what the team brings to the organisation, be they hard or soft benefits, then your job will remain a battle.

So, how do you get it?

Firstly I’d suggest not making any promises to do things cheaper or faster. Whilst it is largely the type of thing your boss will want to hear and they are promises you can make later on, the first thing you need to quantify is whether you are producing what is needed or not. That may mean looking at improving the quality of the documentation, or it may mean re-evaluating the type of information that is produced.

How do you do this? Talk to your audience.

A simple statement, and something it everyone will tell you is core to your ability as a technical communicator but which remains one of those things that is very hard. Even if you have direct access to your audience, the customers of your part of the product, it can still be tricky to get useful feedback from them. With that in mind I’d set up a series of one-to-one interviews. They don’t have to be long, nor do they have to be formal (in fact I staged mine over a few casual chats, grabbing 15 minutes of time from some of our SMEs over the space of a couple of weeks) but you must talk to them.

The benefits are two-fold. Firstly it raises the profile of your team and alerts your customers that you are actively engaged and trying to improve things, secondly it should mean you can formulate a plan to take to your boss.

The former should also start to generate some goodwill, you’d be surprised how many people understand the need for good documentation and you may well be able to garner some support from some other parts of your company. Don’t be afraid to ask people to email you and your boss with their thoughts of your new plan, the more evidence she/he sees that you are driving improvements yourself, the more likely he will be to back you.

But ultimately you need, at some point, to present a plan to your boss. One that outlines what you are planning to do, what the benefits are, and how long you think it will take to achieve.

Benefits should be stated in business terms - for most software documentation the main cost benefit is to reduce the time it takes your audience to complete a task using the software - and the more specific you can be the better. Essentially you have to justify why the company is spending money on you and your team, and ultimately you may be asked for a fine grain of detail that you just don’t have. So, if your plan is to reduce Support calls, make sure you have a way of monitoring the stats AND that you can attribute them to the documentation, before suggesting that as a plan!

Buy-in, in my experience, is largely gained by showing a business awareness. Ever boss will want things faster and cheaper but instead of make presumptions, involve your boss in those discussions. During the start of a project, take the initial scope of the documentation that you and your team have planned, prioritise it (using MoSCoW perhaps?) and take that to your boss. Then it’s a simple case of saying “OK, this is what we MUST have in the documentation, this is what we SHOULD have, these are the things we COULD have and there are also some things we WOULD want to have, can you help me narrow this list down as we can’t produce it all”.

That allows your boss, in conversation with you, to make sensible decisions around the production of the documentation, allows a decision on faster or cheaper to be made, and shows that you understand the business reasoning behind what you do.

Be prepared to have discussions where you lose, where that Quick Start guide that you think is a really good idea gets put to one side. Part of gaining the trust of your boss, and his/her buy-in to your plans is showing that you have the bigger picture in mind, and if you can prove that then your boss should happily back you all the way.

Miley Cyrus Black Prius

Your Ad Here

We had a feeling that old hand-me-down Porsche Cayenne wasn't going to last long for Miley Cyrus. Two months after being given her mom's old SUV as a Sweet 16 present, Miles is over it for some interesting reasons.

For one, "it was too big and scared her," a source tells E! News. Also, she's pretty serious about going green, especially with a soon-to-be released single on her current album, Breakout, titled "Wake Up America." That song goes a little something like this:

Oh, the earth is calling out
I wanna learn what it's all about
But everything I read's global warming, going green
I don't know what all this means
But it seems to be saying

Wake up America
We're all in this together
It's our home, so let's take care of it
You know that you want to, you know that you got to

Subtle, no? (It's about saving the environment.) So Billy Ray finally woke up and surprised her with a black Prius over the weekend. We gotta hand it to Miley: With all her bike riding and now hybrid driving, it really seems like she's legitimately trying to live green.

Gary Collins arrested, suspected of DUI

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say they arrested actor and TV host Gary Collins on suspicion of drunken driving. According to an arrest report, deputies in the coastal county of Santa Barbara pulled Collins over Saturday evening after noticing him driving a motor home erratically. The 70-year-old was arrested by the California Highway Patrol after failing a field sobriety test. He was later released on $25,000 bail.

The arrest comes roughly 13 months after Collins pleaded no contest to driving under the influence and served a four-day jail sentence in a suburb of Los Angeles. He was placed on two years of informal probation, and records show he was admonished about the dangers of drunken driving.

Records also indicate he was convicted of DUI in 2004 in Malibu. They did not indicate whether he has an attorney.

Small Earthquake Rattles New Jersey

Your Ad Here

A small earthquake hit central New Jersey late Monday night, according to seismologists. No one was reported to have been injured.
Residents likened the earthquake, which struck just after 10:30 p.m., to everything from “a bomb” to an underground explosion to “a thump.”

The epicenter of the quake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 3.0, was reported at Victory Gardens, although it could be felt in Rockaway, Dover and Morris Plains, according to Won-Young Kim, a seismologist for the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, in Palisades, N.Y.

The communities near the earthquake’s epicenter are in Morris County, about 35 miles west of Midtown Manhattan.

While 3.0 is a rather large earthquake for the metropolitan New York region, a temblor of that magnitude is unlikely to cause any major damage, Mr. Kim said.

Workers at an Exxon Station in Rockaway, N.J., said that the night was going along normally when the earthquake struck.

“It was like a bomb, a strong one,” said Cafer Sahin, 40, an attendant.

Tom Smaga, 27, was working inside the station when, he said, he first heard and then felt the earthquake.

“It was a loud boom and after that it shook the whole building,” Mr. Smaga said. He said the vibrations lasted for about two or three seconds.

Toni Dellamonica, a dispatcher for the Rockaway Township Police Department, said that there had been no reports of injuries or major damage.

Ms. Dellamonica said the earthquake felt like “a rolling rumble,” as if someone was dragging something across the ground.

In Dover, N.J., near the quake’s epicenter, Francis Rodriguez was playing cards with a friend when, she said, “it felt like something exploded underground.”

The shaking did not damage her house, she said, but her friend, Cheryll Post, who was visiting Ms. Rodriguez, said “it was very scary.” Patricia Avila, was in her second-floor apartment in Rockaway, N.J., when she felt what she described as “a loud thump.”

“It was just a bang,” Walter Michalski, a police officer in Dover, N.J., said of Monday’s earthquake. “That’s it. A bang.”

Peter Johnson, a dispatcher for the Morris Plains Police department, said “I wasn’t sure what it was. It was just a shaking.”

Mr. Kim of Lamont-Doherty said that low-level earthquakes are not unusual near that area.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 2 hit Phillipsburg, N.J., on July 28. A 2.6 magnitude quake struck Sussex County, N.J., on Feb. 17, 2006, and another quake, with a magnitude of 2.1, hit Morris County on Dec. 10, 2005.

ROCKLAND, ME (Feb 2): Where have the Rheal girls gone? Back to School!

Three women from RHEAL Day Spa, formerly nordström skin care, are headed back to school to further their education and expertise level.

"I am so proud to be associated with all the people who work with me, and am inspired by Brianne, Kasey, and Mariah's desire to grow." said owner, Rhonda Nordstrom. “As we move into our new expanded location at 453 Main Street, we will need more expertise and skill in all departments of the spa so we may continue to give our customers what they’ve come to expect from RHEAL Day Spa/nordström skin care.”

Official Website of Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur. M.P. India.
(formerly University of Jabalpur)

Profile of the University

Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya, formerly University of Jabalpur, enjoys the 'Accredited' status and has been graded as 'B++' by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore on 12.11.2002. This grading is based on the institutional score between 80-85% awarded by the Peer Team of the NAAC and approved by its Executive Council and is valid for five academic years i.e. upto 2006-2007. The grading evidences the academic excellence and places the University among the best in central India. The University fraternity i.e students, teachers and employees have worked to earn this reputation and we are proud of it.

The University was constituted and established on 12th June, 1956 under the Jabalpur University Act, 1956 (Act No.22 of 1956) with territorial jurisdiction over Jabalpur revenue district, and shifted to its present location at Saraswati Vihar, Pachpedi, Jabalpur in 1961. Its present campus is spread over 99.63 acres of scenic beauty and environment friendly surroundings and accommodates an Administrative Block, Art Faculty building, Teaching and Research buildings of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Bio-Science, System Science and Physical education departments. It also has a Central Library, Computer Center, USIC, University Institute of Management, University Law Department and also other facilities like boys and girls hostels-one each, University Health Center, University Guest House, Canteen and residential quarters. Other facilities like Post Office, Bank and Printing Press also exist within the campus. It is, therefore, possible to say that the university campus is a city within the City of Jabalpur.

The Academic Staff College of the University is one of the best in the country. It has so far conducted 63 orientation courses and 180 refresher courses in various subjects. Over 7300 teachers have been benefited by these courses. It has also organised an ASC Directors' meet in the year 2001 which was chaired by the then UGC Chairman Dr. Hari Gautam. It has recently moved into its own building constructed with UGC's assistance. In the field of distance education also, this University is making rapid strides. Nine study centres have already been established and many more are coming in near future.

The University was renamed as Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya on 7.6.1983 by Act No. 23 of 1983 to honour the well known valorous Gond Queen of Garha Mandla. It was reconstituted under M.P. Vishwavidyalaya Adhiniyam, 1973 and given jurisdiction over Jabalpur, Mandla, Seoni, Balaghat and Narsinghpur districts in 1995 by Act No. 28 of 1995. With the formation of Katni and Dindori as separate revenue districts, the number of revenue districts under the University have increased to seven. Its activities now spread over an area of 46556 sq. km. having a population of 8.27 millions according to 2001 Census. The area is mostly rural & tribal consisting of 76% of its population. The literacy rate in the area is only 51.6% Population of SC/ST members is 14%. Of seven revenue districts, Mandla and Dindori are, in the main, tribal districts.

The mission of the University has been "to spearhead the assault on rural ills". The main objective of locating the institution in a predominantly tribal and rural region was (i) to develop and upgrade literacy and socio-economic status of the region, and (ii) to secure rural reconstruction by promoting assault on rural ills. In order to maintain its profitability, the company said, it is creating a ‘virtual bench’, where an employee could remain for up to 12 months and would be given a monthly allowance.

Mumbai: Hit hard by the economic slowdown and a slump in demand, IT firm Mastek on Monday said it is offering voluntary separation and ‘forced breaks’ to its employees, and is also “aggressively” seeking to cut down on its staff benefit costs.
“Mastek had experienced a demand slowdown last quarter... the slowdown, in combination with reduced attrition level, has led to an excess bench buildup of around 425 professionals, a majority of them are trainees,” the company said in a regulatory filing.
In order to maintain its profitability, the company said, it is creating a ‘virtual bench’, where an employee could remain for up to 12 months and would be given a monthly allowance.
“These employees are also being offered the option to leave the company immediately with a compensation package if they chose to do so,” the company added.
“For people on the virtual bench, various international departments are working on plans to provide training and development programs to make this ‘forced break’ as valuable as possible.”
Mastek said it has also been taking various steps to reduce its operating expenses over the past few months and “plans to aggressively take additional steps that include reductions in travel expenditure and scaling down of other spending wherever possible.”
Noting these are “tough times” and market conditions were forcing them to take these steps, Mastek CMD Sudhakar Ram said, “My sincere intention is that we tide over this crisis at the earliest and get our virtual bench back on to engagements.”
