We Would Like To End Bagan’s Run – Sporting Coach
>> Friday, February 6, 2009
The Kolkata giants host Sporting Clube De Goa tomorrow in a 14th round I-League encounter. The Green and Maroons had gone down disappointingly 2-0 to the Flaming Orange in Goa.
Life has changed for Bagan since then, as they haven’t lost ever since in the league and now have an enviable eight match unbeaten run.
“Our team is much better shape and fitness than from when we last played Sporting in Goa. The addition of Marcos and several other players who were unfit then has only helped the squad. We look much more settled than before,” said Bencherifa who is already having a great time with Mohun Bagan.
When asked about his opponents, the Moroccan coach didn’t shy from praising the efforts of the Goan side to reach the position they are currently in.
“Everyone had doubts that Sporting would continue their reign at the top. One felt that after a few games, the whole thing would come down but it didn’t. Credit goes to their coach (Vishwas Gaonkar) and the team.”
On being queried about the importance of the game in terms of the title race, Bencherifa only spoke on the necessary three points.
“It’s a very important game but it’s not that if we win, then the title race comes to an end. There is a long way to go and for us a win means three points.”
A win for Mohun Bagan would mean that they would be the first Kolkata side to top the I-League table after a wait of several years.
